Well you won't miss much by skipping the campaign, there are tiny bits of backstory in the intro and conclusion of the matches, but apart from that it's basically the same as multiplayer, only you don't choose your game mode.
I'd suggest to go straight to multiplayer, and maybe go back later to campaign to appreciate the small differences (but then I never really cared about story in my videogames, so it's a biased advice). There are also a few achievements to unlock by finishing the campaign, if it matters.
