Titanfall - PAX Prime intro and gameplay

I played this yesterday. There are some cool things that a genuinely worth getting hyped about, but one thing that really bothered me that I don't think I've seen anyone talk about is the bot/player mix.

Right now as far as I could tell, the COD-style radar only shows player characters, but there are still a shit-ton of bots running around. It creates a weird player experience where encounters with enemies will be like, really stupid bot, really stupid bot, really stupid bot, OH SHIT A REAL PERSON, really stupid bot. It's a little jarring.

Didn't see a lot of close games (including mine) while waiting in line, seemed mostly like people getting steamrolled. Not sure if that means the game can just snowball quickly or what.

If you die while your Titan is ready you have the option to spawn in it next life.

Some screencaps and observations.

Pilots:

Observations:
- Good selection of primary and anti-Titan weapons.
- Cloak is the only Special Ability seen so far.
- Attachments and mods are barely used.
- Is the ‘Militia’ a possible third faction?

Atlas Class Titans:
Do we know yet if you can fully customize your loadout like in MW1 or do we have to use one of those predetermined ones?

Exactly. AI is pretty much just standing still here, human players would have shot the guy and cancelled the lock-on. It must also be limited by range, so you will have to close the distance to use it. It's not like people will be aimbot sniping from the other side of the map.
Ah, yeah. It even says "close-range lock on" in the bottom left corner

I asked DKo5, the Respawn guy that's on here, about customizations and he said they arent talking about them yet so we're not quite sure.

They also dubbed the Titans in the introduction as 'Atlas Class Titans'. So there might be more classes with sub-classes.

I wonder how they will let people get other tier classes. Could also be something that they put behind a progression system.

Hrmm, that sounds likely. I want a 2 man Titan...

They mention XP so I'm assuming there is a progression system planned.

I want non-Bipedal Titans. Give me flying Titans or Spider Titans too.

We'll be making a version to release to the wild that shows/explains what people have been playing at Gamescom/PAX. Don't worry guys :)

Awesome thanks!

Any chance it will be a direct feed 1080p 60fps vid?

YouTube really kills the quality of video lately, especially anything with fast movement like Titanfall.

Just watch Pacific Rim with your peepee in your hand. ;]

:D Not really what I meant lol.

Won't set piece moments in multiplayer get boring after the second time?

I guess it depends how they do them. If it is an MP focused game, the other side must also get their gameplay overview as well right? I am unsure if there is actual storyline progression, else you would do a list of disjointed missions and that would mean nothing.

Depends on the player. If the base gameplay is great, however, I won't care all too much about playing the same "sequences" over and over. I expect Respawn will allow players to modify game settings and create a true competitive gametype(s) for tournament use.

So there are no set-pieces in the 'standard' multiplayer?

No cutscenes or cinematic moments, no. Standard deathmatch and capture-and-hold modes. Look forward to see what else is planned.

Capture the Flag would be awesome with the mobility.

A bomb plant Counter-Strike esque mode might be interesting with the Titans too.

In Uncharted 3 multiplayer, there were 2 maps where in the beginning, you fought on trucks trying to get to a plane, and on another map, 2 trains running perpendicular that would go to the real map after a certain point in time.

In the first few weeks, everyone thought they were so cool. But like you said, everyone eventually just said "fuck this shit, just get to the real map", so ND just created 2 maps without those set piece moments, and now everyone just plays those.

The same will probably happen here me thinks. Like trying to run away back the plane will be cool the first few times. Then you will just want the fucking match to end so you can play again.

The thing I don't like is how the jet-packs are only used for environment traversal rather than for combat as well. The on-foot gun play just reverts back to generic slow movement strafe with iron sights. Reason why I liked Tribes: Ascend quite a bit.

It sounds to me kind of like when the round ends for TF2 games.

The winners get crits, and the losers have to run around and hide. Never gets old. This is just a different take on that mechanic.

I agree with you completely, using standard ADS mechanics is a detriment to the overall gameplay Respawn has developed.

My opinion on this matter has been posted in a majority of these threads though so I wont go into depth.

CTF would be pretty awesome.

All I really want is come Battlefield style Conquest mode. Constantly pushing that line forwards with Titans and super-fast soldiers.

I wonder if you can wallrun backwards. Probably wouldn't be possible with a controller, but with a mouse it could lead to some amazing mid-air kills.

Note - I'm not a COD player and the last Multiplayer FPS I really got into was BF: 1942 :)

One of my biggest concerns going in was that being in a mech would make you too much of a target - and with everyone carrying anti-titan weapons, you'd get taken apart pretty easily by a couple nimble little fuckers on foot. That was definitely not the case - if you're on foot, you need to work with a larger group / allied Titan if you don't want to get murdered.

The game feels great both in and out of the titans. On foot I was ducking in and out of buildings, taking pot-shots at enemy titans as they engaged with our own forces, and running / jumping like hell when they came for me. I also learned it's a good idea to stay above the streets after getting stepped on a few times.

The traversal mechanic is fun, but definitely takes some practice - there are enough protrusions / barriers alongside buildings that you can't just jump and start wall-running willy-nilly. Knowing the maps / routes is going to give you a huge advantage to getting around quickly.

Deploying and piloting your titan is a lot of fun, very distinct from being on foot. Great sense of power and scale, and the defensive shield for the battle rifle(?) titan that collects enemy bullets and spits a deathwad back at them allows you to wade in and start wrecking shit.

Our team won, but the final "don't let the enemy escape" section was a bit jarring - we won the match but couldn't blow up their escape ship. I placed third overall in what I think was a 12 v 12 match (though it felt smaller), but I chalk that up to getting some lucky titan kills.

It was my second favorite game of the show (just behind Towerfall) and I will definitely be picking this up for PC. Despite EA. Despite Origin. Despite no campaign (and I *really* want a co-op campaign!)

I'm sorry but I don't see what all the hype is over this game . It looks seriously generic, the titan aspect doesn't even look like it will bring any real difference to gameplay at all and I can see the wall running getting stale quick. As each level has a story mechanic are you not going to be sick of the same thing playing out after 20/50/100 times. What do I not see that everyone else seems to.

Joke post?

i really like attack and defend modes that progress over a map, like in Unreal Tournaments or similar to Rush in battlefield just not always being a bomb.

hope they get something like that in there

Found it funny how the dude was jumping from one building to another, double jumping and running on walls all while his hand and gun were in front of him as if he was having a slow walk in the park.

This is why I can't get into FPS (unless its something like Mirror's Edge), feels like a camera on a stick.

<impressions>

Awesome!

NO, someone told me it is actually PRE-PRE-PRE-ALPHA O_O
That means it will be ... let me calculate... 23.4 times better than if it was just ALPHA.

It's just impressive because it already seems in a pretty playable state. The graphics will likely remain about the same, but there's all kinds of weapons and mech types they can add. Not to mention raise the map count.

The giant robots and jetpack parkour definitely change up the gameplay quite a bit compared to more traditional / generic FPSs - and I don't see the danger of those elements growing more stale faster than other gameplay elements.

If mechs / wall-running don't look remotely interesting to you, I'd give this one a pass. It is fundamentally an FPS, and if that's not your bag, it's not your bag.

I will agree with you that the story mechanic will likely be annoying, but it wasn't particularly intrusive in the pax demo.

I-it's just Call of Duty with mechs, you guys.

Whilst this does look fun, I can't imagine the amount of auto aim/lock on Respawn are going to introduce to make shooting people at this pace viable. Wouldn't be surprised if it matches or tops COD levels of snap on.

it will probably have snap on for consoles, no snap for PC. That gif is not the actual speed btw. It was recorded at 10fps with every other frame deleted.

The ADS mechanics and the random bullet deviation from hipfire prevent anything like that.

Or a PC or a 360....

Sometimes I can't tell whether people don't know if it is available on other platforms.

Microsoft is pushing the XB1 version, so I can see why people wouldn't be informed. Shinobi got mad at me in a thread for pointing it out one time.

Not really a big fan of FPS but this game looks fun as hell. The wall running and Titan combat looks amazing. I forgot what video I saw but the other opponent ejected from his titan, jumped on the enemy titan, and then took it out with a grenade! Probably will be LTTP on it considering i'm buying a PS4 first. Most likely end up playing it on PC if it really ends up being exclusive in the long run.

Are they really causing an accuracy penalty for no ADS? Even with the console-oriented shooting, the PC version will probably be the one to get. Some of the turns that have been shown are almost 180 degrees. Way more viable with mouse than a stick on even the highest sensitivity.

I haven't really invested my time into an online shooter since Halo: Reach, looks like Titanfall will be the next shooter I pour hundreds of hours into.

No snap-on anywhere. PC (gamepad) and console controls are identical, and what people on the show floors have been playing.

Controls & player movement have had a ton of time & work put into them by a number of coders, designers, animators, artists, testers, and etc over the course of this project. Most of it, if we've done our job correctly by the time the game is done, you won't ever know you notice. =)

If anyone playing these last two weeks had problems or concerns, would love to hear from them.

Is there an option to map jump to a shoulder button? Some of these moves seem like they would be difficult to pull off on a controller without clawing.
