TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

It seems like they might have changed the physics for it. The PS3 version has more movement on the lower back but there are still changes to the wrinkles on PS4. Up near her shoulders there's significantly more in the way of the wrinkles moving on PS4. It's different but not removed.

It's not physics. It's literally two alternating textures.

To me it really is. It's one of little touches that always gave their character models a little more life. Of course it's not full blown soft-body physics, but at least it gave the illusion that the detail wasn't just a painted on texture. A lot of people in this thread seem to shrug it off as unimportant but little touches like this and lighting (shadows) go a long way to make the whole thing more believable.

It's still there on the character in question and I've seen footage of it exactly the same as it was on PS3 for Joel and Ellie.

Ah. Didn't know how they did it. Either way, the effect still seems to be there to my eyes. Just less pronounced.

Looks like it'll be 30fps for me. Pixelated shadows drive me nuts. Can't stand that shit in Destiny.

Oh well. 30fps is still nearly double the PS3 frame rate. =P

Not every shadow is lower quality, some comparison shots posted in another thread show almost incidental shadows in both 30fps and 60fps.

Just thought I'd let you know in case you thought every shadow was pixelated :P

Edit: I found the pics:

Sure seems that way. It would be a shame if someone would miss out on 60fps just for the odd shadow looking better at 30fps. 60fps is default for a reason, guys.

:P

It boggles my mind someone would actually choose to play this game or any other at a lower framerate. Especially after seeing these comparison shots.

I think ND added the 30FPS feature after reading Gaf, as the average consumer probably won't even notice the option.

Cancelling my pre-order over this, this is unacceptable. Screw Naughty Dog.

Jokes, I'm not a loser who complains about miniscule shit.

Did you guys play Destiny? 30 FPS is very playable especially for an adventure game like The Last of Us. It's not a twitch shooter.

but wrinkles, man!

I wonder how many people don't play games but just sit their and analyze shadows and other small things in games instead of actually playing the game.

If any of you do that, you must really hate games. You must also be really bad in social situations.

I am not a 60fps or die kinda person but no way in hell do I give up 60fps for shadows ever. To each his/her own of course.

Looks good either way. The difference between the two is barely noticeable based on the comparison screenshots. Though the missing stuff may be bothersome for others, I don't get the preorder cancelled or I won't buy the game anymore I keep reading here. I think the flaws are just too minor to be noticed without perceptive people pointing it out.

But original ps3 wrinkles man.

Tech discussions and analysis is fun. It's rarely the first thing on my mind on my first play through of a game but sometimes I do like to go slowly to try to piece together how things work and what the game does well. I'm not really looking for flaws though, just little impressive things that many wouldn't notice.

I will also freely admit I have gone frame by frame through trailers to look at stuff, especially when there's a lot of quick cuts. I love games and I love the tech that goes into them. Nothing wrong with that.

It's weird how confrontational a lot of people get about people noticing flaws in a game.

Something not being perfect doesn't mean it's terrible. Someone pointing out that something isn't perfect doesn't mean they're calling it the worst imaginable outcome.

Knowing the faults and benefits of any product you're going to be buying is always a good thing.

People just want an acceptable upgrade. If something was downgraded in the transition from ps3 to ps4, that is worth mentioning and it may make people reconsider spending $50 for the upgrade.

Some of us are also disappointed that ND refused to release any pre release footage of the game. And now we have missing AO in some scenes, missing shadows in some backdrops, bad aliasing in other scenes. Fact is, we want to be convinced to make the upgrade, but we are seeing good reason to hold off.

But it's always great to here another personal attack about social skills just because some of us have high standards in this regard. If we criticize a product, one can only assume we must also criticize people to our social detriment. We also must not play our games correctly.

I'm reading more into the last couple pages and a lot of posters are acting really weird.

Genuinely all this thread needed to be was

"Shadows are improved in 30fps mode"

"How much are they improved?"

"Here are some examples of shadows in 60fps vs shadows in 30fps. There are also these differences between 60fps and 30fps mode"

"Thanks for the info."

But instead posters are making attacks on peoples character with stuff like

You must also be really bad in social situations.

and just outright insults of everyone they disagree with like

The only people that care about this at all are a few whiny bitches on GAF.

I'm genuinely surprised this thread has gone this long without some people being banned.

This is supposed to be a discussion of the technical aspects of an upcoming video game. This whole discussion is showing the most unflattering sections of Gaf and it's really unfortunate.

Well that wasn't a one-sided post at all. No sir.

Whoa! Why did they take this out. The shifting wrinkles have been in all their games since Uncharted. What happened now? I don't wanna be a hater, but there's clearly some notable stuff missing. The Flash Light thing although really horrible definitely seems like a glitch., but the missing animated wrinkles seem like a deliberate decision to remove. It's not like I'm gonna cancel, but some of these things need to be addressed.

What flash light thing? I haven't been keeping up with what's been happening in this thread.

Oh dear. Opinions are fine and all but some people need to show some respect with dismissing the work needed to make this version happen and calling it simple and lazy.

This is a port of a game designed to push the PS3 to its absolute limit using every trick they could, and now they have to move that to an ent....oh, why bother.

Maybe it's just me but I don't really see how that miniscule amount of shadow quality increase really justifies losing 30 whole frames.

If The Last of Us at twice the resolution and double the framerate + all the dlc + photomode is not acceptable and instead you are getting hung up on missing back wrinkles, a weird aliasing bug, and missing vine shadows, I would say there was not going to be any convincing you in the first place. ALL GAMES can be made to look bunk and broken by isolated screens. Especially ones where the game was optimized perfectly for a cell processor and is now on x86 architecture a little over a year after the original released. All we are saying is that yes a shadow is missing here, and there is an aliasing bug there but also that we do not care. We have made the decision to buy the game. You have that decision as well. Please make it.

Get this, you weren't even going to get the better shadows before the patch and the 30fps lock was included for "purists".

Oh I'm definitely not arguing for it to be removed or that it's a waste of time and infact this is a very good thing to give users more options in their games between those who want increased graphical fidelity and 60FPS. Just that personally if I was tweaking my games and the shadow options dragged the framerate down like that, it'd be the first thing to go.

Fair enough. I just want to wait and see to what extent this all happens before my purchase. Won't be holding my breath for too many patches on a re-release.

You should see how uncivilized it gets when someone mentions they might prefer 30fps to 60fps, or they like motion blur, or grain. Like it's factually wrong to like a black and white photo over a color one or prefer an LP to a CD for whatever reason.

The people pointing out the flaws know that it's 2x the res, 2x the framerate, 4x the texture etc. But everything on the remaster should be additional things. So when something that was originally there is taken out I think it's alright for someone to point it out so we all know.

What flash light thing? I haven't been keeping up with what's been happening in this thread.

I thought it was glitch, but some are saying that they're actually calculating bounced light around the area you're lighting, but it's so taxing they have to lower the res of the objects in the dark to get it to work properly. Apparently in the first game they just black out everything around the light except for some specific scenes, so none of this was going on. That's what I got from the posts made about that pic.
