Because you don't have to look past the couple of pages to see people disregarding the 30 fps version in a sort of condescending manner because fps>shadows or whatever. Then when someone points out the lesser shadows of the 60fps mode as something that genuinely bothers them more than the lower fps, many accuse them of nit picking, hating, or having some sort of agenda etc.

OK, but again, I don't see why you're replying to me specifically.

Not once have I accused anyone of nitpicking because they prefer the 30fps mode. The only thing I called him out for was his gross exaggeration of the shadows at 60fps. He wasn't simply "pointing them out" as you refer to it as, go back and read his comments, he was grossly exaggerating to the point it looked like trolling.

Frankly, I don't see why you are white-knighting for him. There have been plenty of people in this thread, and in others, that have displayed their disappointment in the shadows/small FPS dips at 60fps, without consistently acting like a complete drama queen.

When are those as sharp as per the screenshot of the 30fps case which looks more like a wall paper pattern!

I have no idea after you have nitpicked and complained about every little thing with this Remaster, why you haven't moved on. You are very disappointed, you were concerned since they didn't release footage when you wanted, it doesn't look like what you expected, we get it, we know. The shadows totally destroy the immersion for you, we know, we have seen it multiple times now.


I think everyone in any of TLOU threads knows now that orochi91 was totally let down, and thinks ND was shady for how they handled media before release, we know. You dont have to continue bringing it up with every post on and on.

Im not sure how to take this. You do realize that going from 60 to 30 frames/sec frees up a metric shitton of processing power that can be used for other thing, right? You can have the most "amazingest" looking game ever running at 60 fps. If you drop it to 30, you can do things to make it look even more "amazinger". Its not black magic voodoo, its just science and programming.

Also, ps3 is a completely different beast under the hood. Porting isn't just as easy as flipping a switch. This was also NDs 4th ps3 game and the port is their first ps4 game. Things will improve.

If your post was satire or sarcasm, then I just wasted my own time, Im not sure.
 
If those are the extreme cases, it really looks like the kind of stuff you'd have to position yourself close to a wall, stop and look for, to really notice. Author of craveonline text says as much even.

Can someone confirm/deny if the realtime ambient character shadows are missing from the remaster?

That's a very slight improvement, and not even in all situations. In this case, 60fps is more important and will have much larger impact on gameplay than slightly better shadows.

If they added much better AA solution [current AA + downscale from 1440p], then 30fps would be more viable.

Like I mentioned, perhaps a Sony/ND employee will notice and comment on these
concerns. I'll give the 60fps mode a shot if they mention patch fixes after release.
I don't feel the need to hide my displeasure.

I'm not on popular social media sites like twitter or facebook, but perhaps you or others
can ask ND/Sony directly about the chance of future patches.

Which is why I feel they could have used more time, rather than releasing an unpolished
port.
 
I was expecting a much larger gap in shadow quality. Can't believe the PS4 has been maxed out already. And there are reports that the framerate doesn't even run at a steady 60fps? Overrated port of an overrated game on an overrated system. It can't even do decent shadows at 60 frames how is it gonna outsell Xbox One when all is said and done?

It should be a warning to developers wanting to make a 60fps game that they shouldn't bother.
This is close to the best performance we've seen in a polygonal 60fps console game and people are very, very angry.
It's lose-lose. You get less impressive screenshots for previews and dumbasses will still say "It's not really 60fps.".

The 30fps shadows look like those weird PC mods which make all the shadows crisp and sharp, they shouldn't be.

Not to say they should be blurry/jagged, but they should have a soft edge to them.

Yeah, but blurred shadows with softened edges are super taxing to do in terms of GPU performance. It's usually the first setting I turn down on the PC whenever I have issues maintaining a decent FPS.

Then again, they certainly are better than having those weird stair-stepped edges. Not that it's a huge issues (FPS>minor graphical improvements).
 
The game is pre-ordered for a long time and i will certainly play it in 60fps !

The difference is really not that big and it's very hard for me to not play a game in 60fps if i have the option. Love 60fps !!!

For me it depends on if the shadows have a bit of a flicker effect with movement. If 30 fps can fix something like this I'll go with that mode. Otherwise, yeah 60 fps all the way since the lower res shadows have a soft look which can be more realistic.
 
Here are the comparisons thanks to JLeack. Imo i would not trade 60fps which is what the game will be running 99% of the time, for 30fps mode with better shadows. I'll need to test the differences myself but since the game has motion blur on top of 60fps (that's what gives it the cg feel) that's probably the one I'm going to use. But 30fps mode is perfect for photomode.

Those gifs confirm that 60FPS mode has messed up shadows. There are outright missing ones in certain areas.

EDIT: Actually 30FPS is missing some in one of them also.

I don't care about the PS3 version. Comparing this version of the game to itself, some shadows straight up are gone in one mode and not another.

Oddly enough, in one gif 60FPS has more shadows and 30 has less, but sharper shadows.

Seems to be dependent on the area.

Is it an unpolished port when it runs at a solid 60fps for the vast majority of the time? Is it an unpolished port when the 60fps shadows look the same, or almost identical to, the 30fps shadows? Just because you are unhappy with the end result, it does not mean the port is unpolished. Does it only become a polished port when it meets YOUR requirements?
 
Wow, I would never in my life on PC, decide to improve the graphics above a point where 60fps is lost, definitely not for Shadows.

I would even turn shadows off.
The choice is there anyway haha.

I hope you the guy who prefers the 30fps mode also lives life with perfect eyesight and have the best TV. I hope you also got the shit colour calibrated professionally. How can shadow resolution be worth switching the 30fps switch?

Eh? I don't know what you may or may not consider unpolished. I deem it as such
because that's what it looks like to me. It isn't just shadows, as I mentioned earlier in the
thread. I sure as heck am not willing to give up eye-candy if it's available at a stable 30fps.
 
Those shadows honestly would go unnoticed when actually playing the game. Whenever i'd be playing some PC games and I'm changing a setting or two, it's usually something noticeable only when standing still. Once I start actually playing I don't notice it anymore but then I compulsively think about how I'm "missing" something and want to change it back.

Seriously, that's like it doesn't even apply on all shadows, only some selective ones.

I can deal with that, shadows quality is the first thing I'm downgrading on PC and the difference is always so minor. 60fps is worth it!
