Just got a new shiny aluminium PowerBook G4 along with an AirPort Extreme basestation. Now, after an hideous year with a IBM ThinkPad with Win 2000, I'm more addicted to Macs than ever - and I've been using them since late 80's.

What I really have really liked so far:

- Surfing GA-Forum out on the terrace with AirPort. Easy to set up, great to use. Automatically in use whenever I come back home.
- Doing a photoshow with iPhoto with music from my iTunes. I didn't know iPhoto even existed until I plugged in my Canon EOS 300d and it automatically launced.
- Charging my iPod from FireWire from my laptop in the plane.
- the Powerbook looks like hot sex.

What I'm doing next

- Buying two iSight cameras, one for our home Mac laptop and another for the office Mac laptop, so that I can video chat with my gf whenever travelling
- Buying an AirPort Express to extend the high-speed wireless area outside the house
- Buying an Apple Wireless Mouse

Apple, please take all my money. You deserve it.

Congrats. Ever since I got my iBook at the beginning of the year, I've been hooked. I just wish I could get more of their shit with all the money that they take from me. I'm ordering Airtunes next. Rock!

Yeah I will never go back to a PC laptop.

There is just no comparison in quality and productivity. Hell even the MS Office suite is better on OSX.

Those airport express's are the coolest thing in the world too, I use it everyday at work when jumping from location to location, and the iTunes broadcasting to radios is neat.

Speaking as a ten year vet of Macs, and having been with OS X since day one... trust me, you are going to hate the thing in about a year's time.

Also, I really hope you have Apple Care, otherwise, you might be fucked if anything happens.

Been a user of Apple's laptops for a while now (all powerbooks) and have never had a specific hardware problem. I would however recommend getting AppleCare because it means a great deal when you try to sell the unit.

Yes, get AppleCare. My mom's had her iBook serviced serveral times (it's the doomed dual USB model) and the guys at AC were very helpful and the service quite fast. Her iBook was usually shipped out the day it was received and she received it the next day or the day after. They also sent her another keyboard since, after the second repair, the left side would occasionally refuse to lie flush.

Should you need to get something repaired, you can easily end up paying the cost of the AppleCare service. It's also a lot more reassuring to be able to call someone and have them walk you through a solution instead of Googling up a fix, or not being able to since your laptop is dead. Considering how much you probably paid for your PowerBook, it seems like a no brainer.

Thanks for the tips! I have actually had a Titanium PowerBook as a home laptop since it came out, as well as OSX on it - and still use it with no problems. The new one is for work, plus GAF of course. The only time it needed service is when it dropped from my bag to the floor and the screen got smashed (2K eur for a new display, I was insured, but I still cried for violating its dignity).

Another cool thing I forgot to mention is the S-Video port, great for movies and big screen gaming!

All of those "extras" that you speak so highly of are on most all new PC Laptops too. Extra Video outs, built in wireless, etc. That stuff is pretty standard fare for all laptops now.
