Retrospective on UNDERTALE’s Popularity

Though it was released almost a year ago, I have the same opinion of it.

It’s about an 8/10, niche RPG game.

If you like the characters and the humor, you’ll probably like it, and forgive it for its flaws.

If you don’t, you’ll probably hate it.

Surprisingly, there are many people who like this type of game. Though I did work hard, there’s definitely a lot of luck involved in having a game become this popular. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if I never made a game as successful again. That’s fine with me though.

Not only did I not expect this level of popularity, but initially, I was afraid of it. I didn’t want UNDERTALE to become tiring for people, or become spoiled before anyone even got a chance to play it. Early on (this was probably excessive) I even tried to contact certain Let’s Players to tell them not to make any content about it.

But, the game became very popular. Unavoidable, even. At the height of its popularity, “not liking the game” felt like a cardinal sin to many fans online. In reaction to these circumstances, others began actively hate the game, creating an endless whirlwind of discourse…

Like a thunderclap to a small dog, all of this attention stressed me out. And every time it seemed to die down, something revived it, such as the GameFAQs contest, the award shows, bizarre theory videos, and so on. At times, I wished I had a way to quell the attention. I felt a strange powerlessness. (And guilt, for feeling stressed when the success of the game SHOULD be something I’m nothing but ecstatic about.)

At the same time, countless wonderful things were happening. People told me the game helped them through a difficult part of their life. Others told me that the game had made them laugh, or cry, or say “I want to be kinder.” Many young kids told me they wanted to create games or music because of it. And, on a personal level, because of its popularity, I have been able to help myself and many people in my life. (And, hopefully, in the future, I can help many other people because of it, too.)

So, ultimately, it’s a good thing that the game reached so many people, and I’m very, very, very, very, very, very, thankful to everyone that supported it, and everyone that helped me make it.

Thank you.

And thank you to anyone who has created fanworks for this game over the past year. I’ve been in fandoms my whole life. I drew Cave Story characters in the margins of my 7th grade history class notes. So it’s amazing to see something I created incite a similar passion in other people.

Someday, UNDERTALE will fade from people’s minds. But, I’m sure in 10 years, some kid who played UNDERTALE will create a game that surpasses it…

I look forward to playing that.

Tomorrow, on UNDERTALE’s anniversary, let’s have a fun time. I am thinking I will open the askbox, and…

Bark.

Link has the music. Original Alphys Lab theme is really good.

Also from his twitter
Q: Will you ever announce a DLC for UNDERTALE, or a patch with a bunch of new content?
A: Please erase all of the dreams within your mind.

I didn’t want UNDERTALE to become tiring for people, or become spoiled before anyone even got a chance to play it.
welp

Good retrospective. It's cool that he's very realistic about what the game is and what it's become.

It's kinda amazing how Toby Fox went from Earthbound ROMhacks to making a critically and popularly acclaimed million seller.

Glad that he's had so much success.

Clearly, an amazing game. A gem. Reminded me of the greatests Nintendo games of my childhood. Basically what they nowadays fail to do.

I should play it, my brother did already.

Although, I do know everything already, so I don't know if I should still bother

So Toby might make another game OMG

I should play it, my brother did already.

How everything is everything

It's really a game that plays with your expectations, so it's really not going to have the same impact if you know what's going to happen

I'm lucky I only had a few things spoiled for me (stupid STUPID YouTube Related Videos bar)

That GameFAQs game of all time contest was hilarious because of Undertale. The game was so beloved and hated which caused a lot of salt because it bested other legendary games. I love the game even though it's a slog in areas. Though others raging over the game was too entertaining. Just like FNAF.

Can't believe it's already been a year

I was lucky enough to play it before it reached critical mass and I got a bunch of friends to play too

D'awww, I like the alternative Alphys Lab song. Though it probably would've gelled badly with Alphys' theme itself.

SUPER glad that wasn't the version of "Undertale" used in the game. The one in the game now is one of my all-time favourite bits of videogame music.

And yes, he sounds very realistic about everything, including the zealous fandom and people hating the game because of them. But I'm glad he has helped to make others better because of his success, and absolutely deserved for such an amazing game, too. I remember him saying how he liked getting feedback from people who enjoyed the game and helped them get through bad times, so I ended up emailing him myself since it was helping me through a quite miserable time too. He responded saying he loved my animated fanart too. A lot of love has arisen because of this game. <3

The most enjoyable part of this game for me was the music so its cool to hear more. I dont plan on replaying the game despite how short it is but it was decent.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Really amazing game. So glad I played it. I have like 8 different versions of the soundtrack on my iPod.

I wonder if the Nintendo port will ever happen? Maybe its moved to NX now?

Man, this game's popularity must have been a wild ride for him.

Anyways, probably my GOTY 2015, or at least the indie GOTY 2015 for me. Glad it was so successful. Wasn't really expecting any new content, but that also settles that definitively.

I was lucky enough to play Undertale without having been spoiled on anything, despite the game already being out for quite a while. It was an amazing experience. No other game I played ever managed to get such an emotional response out of me.

If anyone hasn't played Undertale yet, I HIGHLY recommend doing so.

What an honest retrospective. Remembering back to how hip it was to hate on it was genuinely sad to me, but I like the positive nuggets he got out of it. For me, it was one of the best games I played last year. It surprised me in ways I didn't think possible in a game of its kind, and the soundtrack continues to be one of my most played, up there with Nier's.

Awesome game.

Among my favorite experiences so far on gaming.

I wish him all the luck on future endeavors, he sounds really down to earth and aprochable.

I look forward to that game that surpasses Undertale on 10 years as well :)

Like Cave Story, its amazing seeing someone jump into game making and contribute something so fresh and genre defining.

Hate on it all you want, this game is already a classic.

I bought this on release out of my love of Toby's compositions alone, so my expectations were just "it'll probably be kinda funny and have cool music", so to say it surpassed them would be understatement.

I remember following the Undertale account too on Twitter and you could tell he was incredibly excited to share his game, but with every passing day its popularity got out of his hands and he was clearly nervous about it. It was bittersweet because the game had become so special to me that I wanted it to be as popular as possible, but Toby couldn't handle it very well so I felt bad for him. Reading this retrospective tho, it's great to see he's come to terms with it. He created something very special and I'm sure a lot of people including myself won't forget it any time soon.

Also I'm liking the unused tracks even though I think the final versions are better, the Undertale one especially. The moment where that one plays in the gamr was so well done.

Was Hardmode ever finished?

Hard Mode was a farce devised to discourage people from naming their save slot Frisk, since they couldn't put a warning like other characters in the game without spoiling it, so the fake hard mode would make people who didn't know who Frisk is go "oh, okay i guess i should name the character something else"

It's really one of the more sobering moments up until the game shattering stuff that follows.

Thanks for making one of my favorite games ever. Played it over a month ago and the damn game is still stuck in my mind.

The scrapped Alphys Lab track is really good. I can hear the similarities to Dr Andonuts Lab though, and the one used in-game fits Alphys's personality a lot better.

Looking forward to playing whatever toby puts out next. Will probably be there on day 1 next time.

Congrats to him for the success. He seems like a really cool guy. Though I fall into that camp he worried about, the one that was extremely annoyed with the popularity and thus never played it because I didn't want a poor experience due to all the overhyping.

However

I've been wanting to play it recently... finally, I have owned it for nearly a year, after all. Not having it shoved in my face everywhere from GAF to Twitter to Facebook has certainly helped with the want to go through it. And reading this has really made me want to, as again, the dude sounds like a great guy and I want to play his game on that principle.

Edit: lol at bikini dog. Wish that was put in.

The Undyne unused song is excellent.

Sad he wont do any more undertale updates, I guess we'll never know what happened to
Gaster (apart from what we already know)

A wonderful note from a seemingly wonderful person. Undertale is a treat and I'm glad it has afforded Toby Fox some success, and I hope it didn't cause him too much heartburn.

Toby's fuckign awesome dude. I won't be forgetting Undertale anytime soon, i'll say that.

One of the only few PC games my PC can run, and i played it from start to finish multiple times. just great. It changed my entire view on what indies could accomplish with super limited budgets

I don't know why, but it bugs me that there's
unfinished content in the current release. He really should cut out the hardmode preview currently in there, if he doesn't feel like he'll be adding to the game at the moment. Besides, if he ever changes his mind down the road, it would be a better idea to start fresh. It'll probably end up different than whatever vision he may have had for it at the time he put it in.

His thoughts on the game aren't too surprising. I just hope he's happy, he deserves it. There'll always be a bad side to fandoms, but I think the game's existence has done more good than bad overall. Personally, I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.

Anyone else playing through Undertale again tomorrow? I know I am.

EDIT:
This is why Hard Mode is there.
Fair enough, though I'm curious, is there a source to this, or is it just an assumption? It makes enough sense, but if Toby has said so, I'd like to see.

My scheduled replay is gonna be the day you get to fight Samael.

Weirdly enough, even though it's my favorite game I've ever played, I don't have any particular desire to replay Undertale, and as much as I loved the characters I don't really have any desire for Toby to create a sequel or revisit them, either (unless it's in the form of a full-fledged Papyrus Dating Simulator). The experience stands on its own.

Day 1 whatever he makes next. Undertale pulls off something rare: being not just a game, but an experience. Every ounce of it comes together to become something magical, and while it doesn't hit EarthBound's heights, it's the closest thing there is to touching that bar.

Unlikely that I'll replay it (it would be like the fourth time), but I'll probably be listening to its soundtrack now and again for the rest of my life.
