Toby Fox posts unused Undertale music + retrospective for UT's 1 year anniversary

Undertale's a lot better than Toby's giving it credit for here. It wasn't just the characters or humor (though that's a big draw). The battle system was incredibly impressive and managed to get better as the game went on. The bosses in particular were really well designed. And of course there's the brilliant soundtrack, which is the make-or-break secret sauce to any retro RPG.

Weirdly enough, even though it's my favorite game I've ever played, I don't have any particular desire to replay Undertale, and as much as I loved the characters I don't really have any desire for Toby to create a sequel or revisit them, either (unless it's in the form of a full-fledged Papyrus Dating Simulator). The experience stands on its own.

Definitely agree that doing anything more (sequel, dlc, anything) would be a mistake.
Unless, of course, it's told through SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT.

I've replayed it a few times, but I can understand not having the desire to do so. Some of my favorite movies I've seen probably 50+ times, but others I don't revisit more than every few years.

One of the most complete games I've ever played. In a dozen hours with my first and only playthrough of Undertale I felt things that games rarely ever make me feel. It certainly isn't the most engaging game in terms of how you interact with it, but the battle system was executed extremely well with every type of enemy having its own unique puzzle to solve if you want to be nice to everything, which you definitely should!

I'm having a really hard time thinking of a game, outside of Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, that affected me emotionally. Playing Undertale made me feel really happy. I loved the characters. They're so adorable with their facial expressions, cheesy jokes and puns, and even your feelings might change about some of those bad guys by the end! Listening to "Undertale" (the song) right now, and there's a lump in my throat. It has more of a soul than 99% of games could ever wish to have.

Toby has a fan for life in me regardless of how well his next project turns out. Thanks for the smiles, laughs, and--not ashamed to admit it--tears!

Amazing game. Probably my favorite of all time. My cousin was inspired into writing from this game. It physically changed people's lives. Thank you Toby.

Congrats, Toby. Undertale is amazing. <3

I played it in the release day (because i adored the demo) and man, it blew me away. In a way that really, REALLY few games do.

Any direct sequel to undertale would absolutely ruin Undertale, even if for the metanarrative elements (ie, Undertale's story literally never ends unless you never play the game ever again), any sequel or spinoff that takes the characters from the original and elaborates upon it would just damage Undertale.

The only possible way it could work is a completely stand alone story taking place in the world after the true ending, no returning characters, no direct ties with the events of Undertale, just a game that happens to take place in a world after monsters re-integrated into human society.

Maybe.

How everything is everything

It's really a game that plays with your expectations, so it's really not going to have the same impact if you know what's going to happen

I'm lucky I only had a few things spoiled for me (stupid STUPID YouTube Related Videos bar)

Well I'm not exactly fully aware on what happend after
Asriel died and how exactly Alphys turned him into Flowery
, but except that I think I know most of the important story bits from watching my brother play on my computer.

I think most creators are hard on the products they make, be it from playing it so much or from having designs/ideas that didn't make it into the final version.

I too think it's a fantastic title. The soundtrack especially is amazing.

I came here to protest the use of acronym "UT" for anything other than Unreal Tournament.

I haven't seen any evidence that this new game holds anywhere near the cultural significance to warrant supplanting the god of arena shooters in regards to the use of it's acronym.

Apologies for taking this so seriously :)

Stop it.

I'm really glad I played this when it launched and got to personally show it to my friends, two of which put it in their top 10 now, and now that it's been a year I think a replay is in order. And while Toby may think that he won't catch lightning in a bottle twice I'm willing to try whatever he makes at this point.

I don't want more Undertale, I want Toby to make a new game. And yes, as someone who got the Genocide ending, I don't want to replay the game. I made my bed and I lie in it.

Is this game ever making it to ps4? I heard rumors or maybe i imagined them.

Doubt it. Toby doesn't seem to be interested in working on the game at all (besides language localizations maybe?) and the game does some weird stuff involving save data and I dunno if that would be kosher with quality control for PS4 or XBO

To be fair, if I didn't see the word Undertale right before the acronym I also would have read it as Unreal Tournament. And I never even played Unreal Tournament, lol.
There's a difference between not knowing and "protesting the use of an acronym"for a videogame, which is elementary school childish

In one year it's sold roughly 2 million units with no major discounts. It's an incredible game with a terrific soundtrack and I'm glad it got so much attention.

I wouldn't mind a sequel if it was set far into the future,
maybe in an over world where humans and monster have coexisted for a good stretch.

It's a fun little game that gets way overhyped by the toxic community, even here. The game itself is ok, but certain interactions with the fanbase has really ruined the whole experience for me sadly.
Happy for Toby that it has been such a success though.

Context! It's just too hard to follow for some people.

Yeah, lol

Atleast it got me to play sooner because YT videos that had nothing to do with Undertale kept recommending me spoiler boss videos. The moment the genocide boss showed up in my sidebar I was 'alright screw it, time to play this before I already know everything.'

Game was fun and Toby's an alright dude. I'll be sure to check out his next project.

That is a great post and I'm really glad to see how he has chosen to handle the success.

Game came out a year ago but to me it feels like it has been with us for a lot longer than that, and I'm not sure why but I think it's a good thing.

I still routinely listen to the soundtrack and every so often I creep forward with with true pacifist run (as much as I love the game I sometimes find it tiring to play for too long) after doing neutral, I guess, about a year ago. I anticipate that I'll always really appreciate the game and like others have said, I look forward to see what Toby does next.

That flowey gif of the very second sold the game to me.

The moment I accidentally
killed my mother and reset only to flowey mock me latter
made me feel a powerlessness that I've never felt before in videogames.

Its the most unique game I've never played.

That was the exact moment when I knew the game would be something special

Love the retrospective and so glad to hear about all of its positive effects on his life. Definitely will be a game that resonates in my mind for a long time to come.

It was probably the best game I played last year. Just the right combination of funny and touching with unique gameplay and a truly fantastic soundtrack.

The Q&A is so good. Here is the list of them in order as well as context.

It's weird, but "hearing" these characters talk again with Toby writing them is probably the best anniversary gift fans could ask for.

Little snippets like this are enough for me, I NEVER want a sequel.

Though an animated series adaptation would be great if they did it right. It would be really difficult to translate and adapt the stuff that utilizes video game mechanics though.

It's wonderful seeing him do this. The brilliant music, the charming characters, the places the story goes... it's a beautiful game.

I know it's not really meant to be replayed, but I'll make an exception on this occasion. Plus, I'll take any excuse I can to listen to the music.

Aw, is it too late to send in my question? I was going to ask about a certain someone's favorite food.

Seriously, though, I'm glad to see the guy's stayed humble without getting too humble! And that in-character QA was just beautiful; I really hope he releases those backer-exclusive comics he's working on to the public someday.
Or they'll leak and I'll instantly cave.
Those beta songs were cool, too; it's impressive to see how far ingrained each leitmotif is into the soundtrack. Parts of Undyne's theme sounded so close to being right despite her supposedly not being a champion of justice yet.
