IMO- the media blew the thing out of proportion from the get-go leading up to the SB, and the league pretty much had to respond with a full-blown investigation. Kraft made some foolish comments publicly about the situation around that same time, which led to a dick-wagging contest that kept escalating every time either side opened their mouth. Throw in heaploads of arrogance and bluster on both sides, and you wind up with the embarrassment that we now see before us.

I wouldn't blame the media entirely. The league allowed the false PSI reports to run rampant for months. They could have corrected that misinformation Immediately, but chose to let the media lie to the public.
To go even further, unless ESPN flat out lied about having an inside source, it was the NFL that leaked the false PSI numbers to them in the first place.
They're not easy targets. That's the point. If they can do it to the Patriots, they can do it to any team.

Goodell's close relationship to Kraft may have forced his hand to make this a much larger investigation/issue then needed.

I bet the Colts even had their locker room fumigated to try and kill all of the bugs they thought the Patriots planted there. It would explain why they always choke so hard when they play them!

Spygate was taping signals in the wrong location. This is a fact yet you completely overstate how serious it was. The NFL is a league of teams pushing the rules and trying to get an edge, it's gamesmanship. You refuse to accept the official findings of it and continue to use it as some core concept that the Patriots are cheating every single game and every single game should be vacated.
What about your team? You know that under Chip Kelly's rein the Eagles has had more players suspended for PED use than all the years of Reid's?
