Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

I can't believe my GTX 560 (not Ti) is getting me 65fps average on ultra – only tessalation and TressFX disabled.

This is a really beautiful game.

I have the same card and every time I start a new game I'm always impressed by the performances this card provide. Reminds me of my old 8800GT. :)

560ti owner here too. In game, with everything on, (tressfx, tesselation), im getting 35-45 fps. No crashes either, but ive only played maybe 30 mins so far.

I did 2 videos of the tressFX stuff, so any other nvidia owners can check it out

Only watched about 10 seconds of that because I don't want to spoil anything, but it looks great. Looking forward to trying it out for myself.

I love how AMD and its fans always likes to bring up moneyhats, but they do the same thing.

Yeah, its all part of the PR game, you'd have to be a dumbass to believe any of the hype anyway, but this Nvidia performance issue is why I just laugh when I see the accusations from one side trying to play the whole 'little guy' role.

I mean, the logic doesn't even make sense. Nvidia only got the game over the WEEKEND? And the game went gold how long ago?

Yesterday, I played this a lot, with no problems.

Today, it's crashing constantly. Usually after it saves, when I collect something. Not happening every time I save though.

I even got the Windows 8 BSOD equivalent for the first time today!

I have an i5 2500K and 560ti (1GB) and TressFX benchmark averages around 20 FPS at 1920x1080. No crashes over the course of 5 hours with tessellation on, though, so I guess I'm lucky.

I have an i5-3570k at 4.4GHz and a 560Ti 1GB - with the game set to High with Tesselation and TressFX I average around 25-30FPS on 1080p with occasional dips into the <10FPS, usually during a cutscene. Disabling TressFX makes my average jump to 54FPS, so I'm just using that (despite the new hair physics being very nice, I'd rather have a nice framerate). Not had a single crash with Tesselation on either (I play in non-exclusive Fullscreen though, don't know if that helps?).

What's amusing is how they somehow act like it's our fault or responsibility in some way because they buy ATi's gak graphics cards and always go back for more.

Hilarious. I want to see if this is posted everywhere like the Crysis 2 tessellation drama that Crytek debunked, but is still mentioned here all the time.

It's stupid fanboy PR bullshit.

Now I'm happy I didn't buy the game day one like I was going to, and I think I'll wait on a sale instead. I'm not supporting this BS with my money.

I don't understand* why Nvidia got such a short straw in this case considering, as per Anandtech's benchmarks, AMD's 7970, 7950 and even the 7870 all offer better compute performance than Nvidia's flagship 680. Leaving Nvidia scrambling to get drivers ready achieved nothing but a profound dicking over of a significant portion of the game's customers.

* Well, I do, but it's beyond stupid.

EVGA GTX 670 FTW, was playing the game and then I traveled into Tron land.

Card was running at over 80* C. I'm assuming that's not normal.

Set up a FAN profile buddy. Make the card's fan kick in earlier so it takes more time to reach high temps.

And reduce memory clocks by a few Mhz if you have funny wonderland in your screen.

Yeah, I don't know, I'm about to mess with settings some more. I'm happy with my performance and the look of the game, but people with similar cards seem to be getting slightly better performance than I am.

It was debunked? Was there a reason that Crytek chose to tesselate water that wasn't visible and to put ridiculous amounts of it onto ordinary concrete slabs when they knew that AMD cards of that generation suffered with bad tesselation performance?

the first few hours of the game are perfectly playable for nvidia users but after the game opens up the frame drop are horrendous, from 60 to 40 and it keeps fluctuating like that, does the hitman profile fixes this as well?

Finished the game, runs great at first on custom Ultra (ssao, dof at normal, tesselation off) at around 30-60 fps but starting in
shanty town
and onwards my fps tank to 20-30 on big open scenes even at normal settings.

I think my CPU is bottlenecking the game. (Phenom X4 945, AMD 6850, 4GB RAM, 1680x1050 resolution)

Oh and I also have a dozen or so crashes, so I guess it's not just nvidia that's having the problem, the game freezes on autosave/in game loading/restart from death for me.

AA settings? Can you at least play at high/2xSSAA while maintaining 30 fps?

Yech, this game is putting up ridiculous numbers on Pirate's Bay. I hope that's just because of the lack of a demo and people concerned over the technical issues and if the game will run on their machines. Because in terms of the actual game, it sounds like they really deserve the money.

I don't know but I tested it when I ran across this point of the game, as you can see the shadow maints definition and intensity no matter how far it's cast away. You can see the DOF in effect though.

Thanks for the shots, it's regrettable because when done well contact hardening shadows are very easy on the eyes.

I can't see it being exclusive to AMD cards so the only logical explanation is that Nvidia's drivers are fucking things up.

I was getting a rock solid 30FPS with TressFX and tesselation off until I reached the same area. It does seem busier than the previous environments which might explain the hit. It's not a huge performance drain for me, only around a 1-2 FPS drop but it's still noticeable.

That or poor teenage boys and college kids want to play the action game with the hot female lead.

Not sure what you are getting at, but a whole bunch of the "Nvidia the way it's meant to be played" sponsored titles didn't run well on AMD hardware at launch, do you think AMD got the final code on a even footing???

I have a feeling this coming "gen" Nvidia users are going to be getting the short straw more, hopefully the AMD users here will be a bit more understanding towards them and not just go on about crappy driver support when the latest game release is broken on Nvidia and works on AMD..

I'm bailing on this thread as it is becoming console warrior territory, but everyone has to remember what goes around, comes around, and AMD might be performing better on this release and maybe a couple of others but it won't stop Nvidia doing the same back, the only people who get hurt are the customers, it's just AMD customers are a bit more use to it at this point...

No. I just capped the shit at 30 and am playing with 4xSSAA instead.

The word you are looking for is downgrade.....

And it is the GPU that does TressFX, not the CPU.

It's very much so an upgrade. HSA enabled APU with a GCN enabled iGPU says you're wrong. Also Jaguar core are much better than my current 'modular' Piledriver cores, not to mention that when I upgrade I'll have an APU similar to the on in the PS4 (one that doesn't have 8 GB GDDR5 unified memory mind you lol).

Played about 30 minutes so far with this rig:

i5 2500k (stock)
GTX 670 4gb Factory OC newest beta drivers
16gb RAM

Crashes like a mofo. Maybe I'll try the Inspector trick. Everything pumped up to max except TressFX and no AA, running at a fairly steady 60 with some dips down into the 50s when things get crazy. Using EVGA Precision X noticed two things: The first is that my card seems to be underclocked the whole time, staying around 706 mhz despite turning off adaptive power management. Secondly, it's telling me that the game is maxing out the card's RAM, which I've rarely seen (though Hitman did use most of it as well). Going to keep plugging away but hopefully Nvidia and Nixxes can work fast on fixing this.

Edit: Benchmark gave me an average of 53.8 fps.

Did the Inspector trick last night and played another hour or so without any crashes. Only places my FPS really seems to suffer is in cut-scenes. Other than that it's 50-60. Could probably cut back on some post-processing and get a locked 60. Again, this is without any AA, TressFX is nice, but not willing to sacrafice 20+ frames for it.

Edit: Although, reading some of the above posts, I guess I can expect my performance to tank in the later sections.

I have a GTX 680 and still get drops with those same settings. :( It's almost a consistent 60 fps but there are skips and bumps at points while playing.

But how can you guys play without AA? That's like the worst for me.

So basically if you are an Nvidia card owner dont buy this game.

Or just use the ridiculously easy workarounds.

Nvidia Inspector Hitman profile fixed all my issues with the tesselation crashes. I put in 2,5 hours yesterday with no crashes at all. Running everything maxed except for TressFX because it bothers me when it doesnt look good.

Because, with rare exception, I don't really notice jaggies when I'm actually playing the game. It really has to be egregious for me to mind and, therefore, is not really worth the performance hit. I may try using some in the future if I happen to notice more of it but for now I don't see the need.

For what it's worth:

All settings are Ultimate + triple buffering + tressfx @ 2560 x 1600

Min: 18 fps
Max: 62 fps
Avg: 54 fps

i7 980x @ 4.1GHz
12GB DDR3 RAM
2 x HD7970 + Catalyst 13.2b7
512GB Crucial M4 SSD

The Hitman trick appears to have also cured my instability issues, however the games does briefly freeze at points where it would have otherwise crashed.

I noticed this as well. That said, having finished the game now, it only happened maybe 3-4 times total.

It appears that Tomb Raider is another game that doesn't support Tri-Crossfire. Damnit. I'm getting tired of this. Selling my tri-crossfire 6950 setup for a Titan setup.

I know this isn't the right place to discuss piracy, but I will say that I am so disappointed that working adults who have a steady income, friends of mine, are downloading this game and not paying for it. So discouraging.

Especially when you can get it for like $35 with promo codes. This game is amazing and they really deserve the money.

That being said, I can't believe my ancient PC is getting me a minimum of 30 FPS on ultra setting with just TressFX and tessilation turned off.

CPU: Core 2 Duo @ 3.6 ghz
Video: HD 6850

Yup. Rogers and Bell here in Ontario recently started offering a bandwidth-cap free service to their customers. I was excited about it because it means I can finally enjoy the "digital future" and do things like download games on Steam and watch Netflix all day (you know, the way you're supposed to use these services) without worrying about a cap. Buddy in work did the same thing. He comes off the phone after getting himself set up, turns to me, claps his hands and rubs them together, and loudly exlaims "PIRACY!" with a shit eating grin on his face. Turned my stomach. You're ruining it for everyone, dude!

On topic so this post isn't a waste - playing on an aging HD5770 @ 1600x900 with everything cranked up except SSAA (using FXAA), and with TressFX and Tesselation off = looks amazing and plays mostly very smoothly, 50-60fps. It's still playable with Tesselation on but it's a pretty huge hit on framerate, which is pretty much standard on this card.
