Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

PC Gamer speculates that people should get used to the AMD advantage in next-gen titles.

Hopefully Nvidia will be able to support current high-end cards well into the next-gen(hopes gtx 660 owner...)

I'm not sure of the AMD advantage will matter in the long run, but I won't lie: I am a bit worried about how my GTX 670 is going to perform when a lot of compute heavy games hit. I only just got the damn thing, and had no idea Kepler was a bit poo at compute (I would have know if I bothered to do the research. Too much faith in team green). Upgraded from my GTX 570 for this and would like to keep the 670 for a good while yet.

Given the massive performance cost of Liara's hair, it's going to be really interesting to see how very compute heavy games shape up. I foresee much disappointment, if the games aren't optimised well.

Titan buyers cryin' hard.

Same here. I'm really worried I'm going to get drunk tonight and order a 7970 at two in the morning or something.

Tress FX looks much better now. The hair can probably stand to be a little heavier but the collision is pretty good. Lara's ponytail will even split in two if the wind catches it just right which I don't remember seeing before.

Also, no more hover hair. :P

Didn't have a single issue until the patch. In Geothermal Caverns and I'm CTD every two steps.

670, went to the new Beta Drivers and altered all my settings to every possible combo, no joy.

Dat Mass Effect 3 bleed-in effect lol.

Once AMD gets their GCN architecture in the 7xxx series fully up and running via further driver optimizations, the AMD advantage may well extend further. Too bad the true successor to the 7970 is being delayed.

So I got this on PC. Jesus fucking christ DATT HAIRRR SON (just make it SLIGHTLY heavier and it would be truly perfect). Game runs beautifully on ultimate settings and just looks great. If this is what I can expect out of my AMD card for upcoming games I'm strapped in and feeling the Gs. This is on an HD 7850.

Great, can't make two steps without crashing after the new patch, before i could at least play 20 minutes.

@Admiral Snackbar
I'm also in the Geothermal Caverns, maybe it is something specific to this part.

I think you can switch back to the version before patch in steam (per beta) right?

edit.
What? there are like 15 beta things to chose from, what are those for?
I guess 1.0.716.5 is before the patch, but what is all that other stuff

I'm finding I can move around the environment but any type of interaction crashes hard. The prompt to pick up ammo crashes, going into a cinematic crashes. But just wandering seems to be safe? Course, now I can't get out.

I saw the beta tip on the official forums, I'll give that a shot too. I had 9 hours of solid, stable play time and only now in this area is it freaking out.

Well that latest patch totally fucked me over. I can't even launch the game anymore. Hit play and get a black screen and then the game crashes. Played through the entire game fine without any hitches. Beat it last night, now this update I got this morning totally killed it.

Maybe I need to re-install? Validating files now....

This is strange because a similar thing happened with Sleeping Dogs. Totally fine, then after first patch problems started happening.

Are the water splatters supposed to be so pixelated and full of artifacts or is it a nvidia issue? Was also downsampling from 2880x1620 so that could be the problem.

/edit

ohh I see what you mean now.. sorry, I thought you were talking about the specks on the camera lens. I'm not too sure about that.

It looks like they're using a bokeh effect for the water drops which emulates the shape of a camera's aperture diaphragm (polygonal). Not really accurate for water.

I don't think he's talking about that. I assumed that right away as well but edited my post because if you look by the branches on the left side, you'll see a water drop directly hitting the camera.. it looks pixellated. There are multiple instances of it all over the screenshot.

Has anyone else's performance just dropped after the patch??

On my gtx 680 I was getting a lot better fps now I get this:

tombraider2013030914242.png

This is with Tress ON, 2xSSAA, High prec OFF, tessellation OFF and Exclusive Fullscreen mode OFF ..

I'm using latest beta drivers..

Not much of a performance change with the patch (GTX 480) but it's nice being able to play fullscreen with all effects present.

Don't mind me, just testing fraps and minus, never posted screenshots or taken them before

Edit: Dat Pixelated Foliage

Edit: Any advice is greatly appreciated: hosts, software, etc...

God damn lol. That 1st one looks almost like a CGI bullshot, what are you on, ultimate settings?

It's a cut-scene so it's sort of cheating. Everything on but SSAA, solid 30fps. Literally I just stop playing to test out screenshots, no idea how far I am in the game.

What Remij said, sorry for the lack fo clarity. Do mean the actual water drops/splatters hitting the camera. They look really awful and I don't know why they do.

All the benchmarks I've seen show TressFX eating a third of the framerate across all GPUs. But Nvidia GPUs don't seem to be performing as they should, TressFX or no.

I'll have to give them credit for aggressively improving and optimizing the hair effect with patches without us having to wait for another game.

Biggest improvement is her shoulders no longer have a obvious forcefield that the hair was colliding with before. One of the strands clips through the side of her neck in the benchmark now, though. Still, it's animating better each time they update it.

I'm not that impressed by TR's visuals. I'm currently playing Crysis 3 pretty much maxed out and farcry3 and I maintain 60fps most of the time. I just don't see how TR's visuals can be that demanding minus the TressFX

Is there any way to have v-sync when Exclusive Fullscreen is off? If I put it on I get a lot of fps drops with my 570 and when I turn it off I get crazy tearing.

I tried limiting to 60 fps in afterburner and forcing vsync via the nvidia panel but I still get a lot of tearing.

If you're using Vista/7, then turn on Aero.

Is major stuttering on auto-save a common problem with this game?

Should we undo that hitman absolution trick (for the tessellation crashes)?

Nope. I accidentally ran it this morning without Inspector open and it acid trip crashed right after the cave.

edit: I seriously cannot fix this flickering foliage shit. I even dropped everything down to low or off and it still does it. Dunno if it's an nvidia or programming problem. I'm assuming a decent portion of the game transpires around trees and bushes though so I can't just suck it up and play.

I have SLI 680ms, the new nVidia beta drivers don't work (get a black screen after install) and neither does the nVidia inspector. I'm pretty much stuck with turning off TressFX and Tessellation if I don't want my game to crash regularly.

I was getting decent framerates in 'Ultimate' mode too, too bad it was so unstable.

With a bunch of settings nerfed, I have trouble exceeding 110 fps with 6950 CF and i7 2600K.

With tressfx enabled alone I go to 40 fps with major frame latency increases. Seems tressfx CF hasn't really been implemented.

I'm in medium settings land now. Time for a new PC.

I was going to try with CF disabled, but there seems to be a bug in driver 13.1 that makes my BenQ only able to go to 60 Hz with it disabled. Weird.
