Too much emphasis on graphics?

Do you guys think there has been too much of an emphasis on graphics this generation? Have graphics become too important and how much do you think graphics play a role in a game's percieved quality (but regular gamers or critics)?

Im happy that more emphasis is on graphics nowadays.

And by the looks of things, it looks like its going to continue.

Obviously it depends on context. No need to knock graphics, if it's going to be in the service of something fucking wonderful like RE4 then whoring, here I come.

I don't understand people like you,are you saying you don't like good graphics?

Graphics aren't everything, but they can go a long way as far as making the game seem more real and believable, especially in sports games...

But seriously, I can probably overlook some gameplay flaws if the graphics are great. I actually buy a lot of games for the graphics. DOA3, DOA:U, MX Unleashed (because of the 1080i mode) ... I bought copies of Tony Hawk 4 and Underground that I already had on the GC, because of the 720p modes... PGR2 was basically because of the visuals. Rebel strike, same deal. I want to get Resident Evil 4 so I can see how good the graphics are.

This statement implies that there hasn't been as much of an empasis on graphics for all previous generations, and I don't believe that's the case at all.

graphics are as importent as gameplay or any other element. haven't you hear "that the first impression is the last impression" if a game doesn't look good, about half of the potential buyer won't buy the product

Huh. And GTA this generation sold because?

what PRINE said.

you need the visual polish - it won't always make the game better but it makes poor games bearable (JSRF... finished it despite intensely disliking it for being a subpar sequel). It makes great games better

As long as the game is fun, the visual look just needs to fit...I care more about framerate and lack of visual flaws/bugs more than "OMG THESE TEXTURES SUCK"
