Proper spelling of his name is Gekko Moriah, according to Oda. The English version, though, uses the old fan transliteration of Gecko Moria.

While "Gecko" continues the animal theme seen across most of the Seven Warlords' names, "Gekko" means "moonlight" in Japanese, which seems pretty appropriate.
