1. FMA Brotherhood
Every week doubt creeps into my mind and I'm left thinking that FMA couldn't possible come close to topping the greatness of its previous episode. However, every Sunday I am left writing about how my expectations were blown out of the water which is a testament to just how good this show is.
Seeing Greed sacrifice himself to turn father into weak carbon was pulled off excellently and actually quite a twist for me, I never really expected him to do something so selfless since his name is, well, GREED. I guess the power of NAKAMA overwhelmed his survival instincts.
Watching Edward sacrifice his alchemy for his brother was another high point, it was great to finally see Alphonse with a body in the real world. The ending was perfect too, when the music kicked in I just sat back and soaked it all in...
One more episode to go!
2. Soul Eater
Maka predictably came in with the save last week but Soul Eater punched us all in the collective gut yesterday by nearly killing of Crona. I kind of wish he/she had actually died though, it would have been more impactful but what do ya know, he/she barely survived...I felt like that was a cheap cop out but shonen gonna shonen I guess.
Stein breaking out of the madness and teaming up with Maka to pull off the genie hunter was very cool, you know shit is going down when that guitar rift starts. Medusa is the best villain on the block and it's sad to see her go in a way but watching Maka kill the shit out of this evil woman was very satisfying.
Next week Based Star takes on Mifune in round III, that preview has me hyped!
3. Naruto
I LOVE this training arc, it introduces the element of teamwork which is a real world concept we all use every day. It's not often that anime on this block dip into the realm of reality which is why I enjoy watching team 7 learn a useful lesson that has real world use.
We got to see just how advanced Sasuke is for an academy ninja this episode, unfortunately for him Kakashi is light years ahead in every way. Speaking of Kakashi, it was nice to see his softer side and backstory (no, not THAT kind) touched upon a little bit.
This show does a lot of things well early on. Well, except for Sakura, she's so damn insufferable. I legit hate her at this point, what a waste of a character.
4. One Piece
Guilty before proven innocent. Comic book-esque vigilantism. Mob violence. Lack of common law. No due process. The death penalty.
Water 7 sure is a weird place, it's practically Afghanistan this point. Instead of hearing Luffy out and finding evidence that a member of his crew attempted to murder Ice pops, they decide to rely on heresay and adopt a 'Lol fuck it lets kill em all' attitude. That makes absolutely no damn sense. At least we got to see Franky be a badass, that alone bumps this into the top 5.
5. Ghost in the Shell
I usually tend to agree that the SA episodes are better than the complex ones but these last two have been pedestrian. The plot was easy enough to follow: Section 9 is tasked with defending a rich dude from a fringe Chinese terrorist group who sends an assassin out to murder him. The Major and arm cannon girl get to his residence at the same time and race to get to the target first. Simple enough.
What I don't get is why the assassin didn't just shoot her target when the major told her to freeze. What an idiot.
Also, how could nobody tell he was dead? The dude had been rotting in a bed for 4 months, I'm sure the smell should have tipped them off.
It was an entertaining episode overall though.
6. Samurai Jack
Never watched Jack as a child but now that I'm older I can really appreciate the water color painting asthetics and minimalist story telling elements, it worked out nicely the first episode. I was skeptical about how this show would fit in at 4AM but it was a nice change of pace and made for a more relaxed viewing experience. We'll see if I feel the same a month from now though.
7. Space Dandy
I disliked this episode of Dandy, it didn't really 'fit' to me. The show pulled a 180 and tried to go into serious mode while keeping the cringe worthy, unfunny boob jokes intact. I don't get why people talk about 'feels' (I'm starting to hate that term btw) in this episode, I had absolutely no emotional attachment to this little girl Dandy was forced to help out. We got the classic 'GROWN UPS R BAKAS' speech and from then on I knew exactly where this was going, the writing was extremely predictable. The ending action sequence was cool but nearly ruined for me when Dandy basically told loli girl he'd fuck her brains out when she turned 18. I actually face palmed when she was all like 'I'll grow boobies and a nice butt so we can go on more adventures' at the end, it was pretty bad. Now obviously she didn't say those words exactly but it was implied.
The music was excellent as always and I really enjoyed the art direction. However, I feel like this episode should have been a two parter, I didn't have enough time to get invested in the little girl which soured the whole experience for me. This was probably my least liked episode of Dandy yet, hopefully next week is better, it looks promising.
8. SAO
Kirito finally figured out that trying to solo the world tree was a mistake. Simplord confessing his feelings for Sugu/Leefa and then proceeding to pull a Chaitzou was hilarious; if you die in the game I hope you die in real life. Outside of that and Yui being an annoying little bitch nothing was particularly bad or offensive about this episode. I'm sure we'll be back on track next week when pedo rape guy makes an appearance.
9. IGPX
Cool music, chill vibes. I dig it. Nothing exciting happened but nothing was particularly bad.
10. Shippuden
I've been told to be patient because the pacing is awful but Christ, this was terrible. The amount of content we've seen in Shippuden so far should have been squeezed into 2 episodes but instead was stretched out to 5 for some unknown reason. The Gaara fight was so freaking BORING outside of birdo getting his arm crushed. When does the good stuff start dammit!?
11. Bleach
I am the biggest Bleach Stan in this thread by far and generally tend to be leinient on the show. Last night however was without a doubt the absolute WORST episode of anything to ever air on toonami. Not just since the block was brought back either, I'm talking EVER. I was tempted to change the channel multiple times but managed to stick through this giant smelly log of gorilla shit, that in itself is more impressive than completing the whole 6.5 hour challenge.
Slice of life Bleach hasn't worked since season 1, why the HELL are you going to center an entire episode around Kon being annoying? It's like the writers are sadists taking bets on how many viewers they can get to commit seppuku after watching this abomination, fuck you dirtbags for exposing us to this pile of filth.
Remember when hollows were a threat? You know, way back in season 1? Welp, they're a thing again!!! Don't try to insult our intelligence Bleach, there's like 15 capable fighters in town who have survived the Espada and Aizen, am I really supposed to believe hollows pose any real danger? While I'm at it, fuck you Nozomi for pulling a Zanpaktou out of thin air to save your meaningless life. If you died Kageroza's plans would be ruined since he already stated he needs you. You're a mod soul too, nobody will care about you anymore than they care about a gum wrapper they just tossed in the trash.
So. Much. RAGE.
