I always thought that midquel segment was really, really good. It's eery how Jack is still his good natured self but you can tell he's becoming tired and despaired, and him walking up the mountain alone makes it stand out how lonely he's become.

I've enjoyed these latter episodes of season 5 much more on a rewatch. They really show the beauty of the future world and what Jack has to leave behind if he wants to get to the past. That market scene evokes a Star Wars cantina type wonder.
