In the sense that it's also directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, and is also a case of a small group going on various misadventures loosely threaded together by a central plot, you're on the right track.

I am sort of glad it was not Ergo Proxy but on the other hand that would make for an interesting group watch.

I would've been fine with this, as I quite enjoyed it. Though at the same time, it likely would've been more of a case of YMMV for ToonamiGAF than Samurai Champloo.
