Ten protects you in general, it's just that nen attacks are so strong you could die if you're hit by one without ten active. It even slows, and affects, the aging process to a degree.

Heck even a glancing blow with nen can lead to a serious injury for those not careful. Ten acts like an armor but there are huge benefits to sacrifice it which we will see later.
