I started watching the dub and because it took a long time I ended up buying the entire series with subs.

Jiraiya acts like he's never heard of Naruto before and he just stumbled across an interesting student, then in part two it's revealed that he is Naruto's godfather and was even responsible for naming him. That revelation does not make sense AT ALL with first half Jiraiya.

Yeah. I noticed things like this. In that area, I feel Kishi is really weak as a writer and has a hard time keeping himself from retconning and making things inconsistent.
