Top 15 Sega Games

well, being that most of the teams have been a bit out of it as of late, i figured why not talk about the good?

anyways, here are my top 15 Sega games of all time. you can list series if you want.

15. Skies of Arcadia
one of the handful of RPGs that i enjoyed playing quite a bit. i liked the games style, characters, and setting.

14. Virtua Tennis
best Tennis game since Super Tennis (up until that point). great controls, music, and excellent multiplayer.

13. Virtual On Series
easily my favorite mech game. great style, character designs, and action.

12. Space Harrier
beautiful game. really awesome style, good music, and just a joy to play or watch.

11. Jet Set Radio Series
ah, the days of Dreamcast's prime. this game just did everything right.

10. Super Hang-On
it' just Motorcycle racing action. with super good music that's keeps up with the action no less. easily the best Motorcycle racing game ever. i love namco's efforts in the genre with a passion, but this is all i need out of motorcycle racing games. perfect pick up and play game. oh, and as bad as some of the ports turned out, the GBA version of this game although not arcade perfect, actually has it's own feel, and plays really really great.

9. ChuChu Rocket
ranks in my top 5 puzzle games of all time. says quite a bit i think considering meteos, lumines, and polarium recently hit.

8. Fantasy Zone
man, i love everything about this game. everything about it is fantastic.

7. Streets of Rage Series
even though it's a great game and all, the main reason this ranked in my top 5 was because part SoR2's soundtrack. without a doubt the best soundtrack on the genesis.

6. Shenmue Series
clearly the gameplay isn't anything special or anything. but i'd say over all, everything about the game kept me playing for some reason. come to think of it though, im just really in love with how big of a loser Ryo is. he has to be by far the best failure in videogame history.

5. Daytona USA
it's Daytona. what more needs to be said? owning 7 others in the arcade was always awesome. Dreamcast version was great too i thought. too bad it was nearly impossible to play online after a month.

4. Sega Rally Series
to this day, this is my favorite Rally Racing game. the soundtrack is easily one of the best.Takenobu Mitsuyoshi made the most inspirational rock music the genre has ever seen.

3. Phantasy Star Online Series
my first real online gaming experience. i spent a lot of time with this one, and litereally played it for 3 days straight when i first got my hands on it.

2. OutRun
this game is just special. it does everything right, and then some. i can never say no to this game. easily one of the best games of all time.

1. Rez
perfection. it blended everything flawlessly. i don't know what to add. this would easily make it into my top 20 of all time.

other Sega games that i'd like to play more of, or just play all together are Super Monkey Ball, Cosmic Smash, Super GT, F335 Challenge. i really do get the feeling that if i play F355 Challenge, it's gonna make it on to the list without effort.

i feel as if im forgetting something for some reason. i'll make sure to add honorable mentions or something if/when i remember.

they need to release chuchu rocket for the ds with online mulitplayer... some of the funnest times i have ever had was playing this game multiplayer

You know what ? I'm like a lot of peeps here in that I LOVED Rez, but it's not their best effort or perfect.

It's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short, and if they started the game with even the simplest of background beats, maybe more people would have (gotten it).
And realized that they could shoot to a beat rather than trying to create a rhythm on their own with shots fired.

That said, I still love the game and pray for the day a sequal is made, but it's not Sega's best by any means.

7 copies of Streets of Rage 3
7 copies of Shinobi 3
1 copy of Thunder Force 4

Edit: Oh wait, I read the title as Genesis only... Well, it's still half right.

Bit of a tangent here:

I'm sick of people making lists of the "top 5-10-15-whatever" games and then listing entire series in one spot! Have the courage of your convictions and rank those games!

:D

For me:

1. Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution

2. Virtua Fighter 4

3. Virtua Fighter 3

4. Virtua Fighter 2

5. Daytona USA

6. Shinobi III

7. Phantasy Star IV

8. Panzer Dragoon Orta

9. Panzer Dragoon Zwei

10. Sega Rally 2

11. Scud Race/Super GT

12. Revenge of Shinobi

13. Sonic CD

14. Panzer Dragoon Saga

15. Super Monkey Ball DX

My top 5 Sega games are:

#5. NBA 2k2. Best basketball game ever made.
#4. Toe Jam & Earl (the original game)
#3. Jet Set Radio series
#2. Panzer Dragoon Series
#1. Shenmue series

This list has some classics, but it a joke without any hedgehog in it.
how do you figure? i liked each and every one of those games more than sonic 2 (which i feel is the best in the series, although rush could very well take that title).

remember, this is a thread for people to post their own personal list.

Johnny Nighttrain said:
god damn it, why do i keep forgetting that i have to penalize a game for being short? stupid ass me.

Usually you shouldn't have to, but when the games 30 minutes tops, it Should be a factor.

Took me 20 minutes to beat my first try.

Didn't mean it in a bashing attempt, Sonic 1-3 equal bliss. I thought the 3rd one was like the Mario 3 of the series. Rez I question greatly. Nice to see Virtua Tennis on the list. Shenmue while not a GREAT game, it was the most detailed game I have ever played.

1. Super Monkey Ball
2. Super Monkey Ball 2
3. Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
4. Sonic Mega Collection
5. Beach Spikers
6. Sonic Adventure DX
7. Phantasy Star Online I & II (Gamecube Ver.)
8. Skies of Arcadia Legends
9. Phantasy Star Online III
10. Billy Hatcher and the GIANT Egg
11. Beach Spikers
12. Sega Soccer Slam (Gamecube Ver.)
13. Amazing Island
14. Sonic Heros (Gamecube Ver.)
15. Virtua Quest (Gamecube Ver.)

15. Virtua Quest (Gamecube Ver.)

:lol You cannot be over the age of 10....

1. Rez
perfection. it blended everything flawlessly. i don't know what to add.

It could use some gameplay.

Here's my shot, though:

5. Crazy Taxi
4. Sonic the Hedgehog, up to and including Adventure
3. Jet Grind Radio
2. Virtua Fighter series
1. Virtual On series, sans Marz (probably)

I can't make a top 15 list without breaking down each series.

...So I'll make a top 15 list broken down. =D

15. Moonwalker
Genesis version, not that System16 isometric crap.

14. Virtual On
Yeah, the Saturn port is a bit (well, more than a bit) fucked around with, and Oratorio Tangram passes it in most ways, but it plays different enough to come back to occasionally.

13. Sonic 3 & Knuckles
It was huge, of course. Need to play through it again, maybe it's just nostalgia.

12. Phantasy Star Online
Logically, this game sucks. Seriously. Really, really badly. Yet, I can't stop playing it. I will never figure this one out.

11. Shinobi 3
Name a better ninja game.

10. Sonic Adventure
It's not as good as Mario 64, but I'd say it's my second-favorite 3D platformer. Internet Time Rankings on Emerald Coast were some of my most memorable moments in gaming. Dashing madly, leaping on the first overhanging bridge, dashing up the *side* of that cliff... Beautiful stuff, absent from the sequel.

9. Shenmue 2
Everything wrong about the first game was fixed.

8. Crazy Taxi
Excellent idea, came completely out of nowhere. Great job at making the city seem bustling, better than any game prior, and the city's layout was fantastic.

7. Sonic The Hedgehog
Nostalgia's a big part of it, but there's no question that this game is excellent.

6. Panzer Dragoon Saga
The only RPG I've been able to completely blaze through without a spot of tedium. Probably looks like ass today, though, and that will slightly change things for me.

5. Space Harrier
Oh my fuck, I almost forgot about this. Great nostalgia stuff all around, of course, with the sprite scaling and the music, but it's also an excellent game, today. I love the bosses especially.

4. Jet Grind Radio
As said, greatest platformer ever made.

3. Virtua Fighter 3
I think VF4 is the better game, but the omissions in 4 leave plenty reason to come back to 3.

2. Virtua Fighter 4
It's not quite Third Strike, but there isn't a better 3D fighting game out there.

1. Virtual On: Oratorio Tangram
Original idea, perfect execution, blah blah hyperbole blah. The truth is that it's fast as hell, completely balanced, unbelievably pretty, and pretty damn complex, too.

15. Sonic Advance 2 Kinda don't get the slack this gets. I enjoy it though.

14. Crazy Taxi 2 Definitely not as good as the first... but still pretty fun.

13. Sonic Adventure The Sonic levels were what sold me on the Dreamcast years ago in 1999.

12. Sonic Adventure 2 The levels with Sonic/Shadow are the best I've played in any 3D Sonic.

11. Crazy Taxi I fucking LOVED this in the arcade, and played the hell out of it at home.

10. Super Monkey Ball 2 Love the multiplayer

9. Super Monkey Ball Some really clever level design made this great.

8. Panzer Dragoon Orta My first go in the PD series. Too short, but still great.

7. Phantasy Star Online My first online game, and it was free. Stuck with it for several months through Gameshark-infested waters, but it was still a lot of fun.

6. Shenmue II LEAGUES better than Shenmue, and has one of the most memorable final boss battles ever.

5. Jet Grind Radio A fun original game that I could not put down for a very long while.

4. NiGHTS into dreams... I didn't "get it" the first time around, but I came back to it about a year after we bought it, and I truly enjoyed it.

3. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 One of my favorite platformers.

2. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles Also one of my favorite platformers.

1. Skies of Arcadia/Legends For me, it was an instant classic. Really charming characters and a great sense of exploration and adventure.

It was really hard coming up with 15.

Nothing wrong with being young. It just sad you'll never experience the true classics the way our generation did. Some of those games on your list are fine, but if you enjoy them you should check out some of the other games listed in this post.

I was never a big fan of many of the big Sega mainstays (Sonic, Daytona, Virtua Fighter) nor many of the hardcore favorites (Nights, Panzer Dragoon). Although I'm not a fan of those series, per se, they still get much respect. I'll defend Virtua Fighter 'til I'm blue in the face having only played a few hours worth.

Anyway, my top fifteen, which might look a little weird.

15. Jambo Safari
Why this "job series" game never took off is beyond me. It was a wacky arcade treat that I wanted to explore more in depth than my wallet would allow.

14. Shining Force
Made me realize I liked SRPG's.

13. House of the Dead
This game revitalized light gun games for me, making the thrill more visceral. I'm naturally afraid of zombies, so the content plus the frantic pace won me over.

12. Castle of Illusion
A beautiful escape and a nearly perfect 16-bit platformer.

11. Golden Axe
The arcade magic was a mind scrambler. The home port was a disappointment.

10. The Typing of the Dead
Took my favorite light gun game and made it a real-world skill spaz fest. I LOVED IT.

9. Super Monkey Ball
One of those games that just makes sense. Skewed skill-wise to the hardcore, aesthetically pleasing and mechanically easy to the casual. Brilliant.

8. Phantasy Star Online
A gorgeous time-sink with some of the best graphic design ever. If Sega would drop this Hunter's License bullshit, I'd be playing right now instead of posting.

7. Samba de Amigo
My favorite music game of all time and one that I force everyone to play when they come to my apartment.

6. Streets of Rage 2
I came for the beautiful brawling, I stayed for the light-years ahed of its time soundtrack.

5. Jet Set Radio
The best looking game ever. Amazing soundtrack, brain melting innovation, stunning presentation.

4. Virtua Tennis
I hate tennis. I love this game with all my heart.

3. Phantasy Star II
The first RPG to tell me a real story. I loved the journey.

2. Rez
I can't describe it. It is ecstasy.

1. Shinobi
Reintroduced me to the arcade experience when I'd lost interest. Helped me get through high school. Still blows me away to this day with its flawless level design, variety, and thunderous special effects. Made me a gamer for life.

What's "sad!" is people who don't have a Nintendo GameCube, whcih is the best place to find Sega's Greatest stuff. (IM12yoO)

I have the Gamecube and love it. But there was something just special about the 8-Bit and 16-Bit days that I miss.

15. Virtua Fighter III
14, Daytona II
13. SEGA Rally 2
12. Crazy Taxi
11. Sonic Adventure
10, Phantasy Star Online / Phantasy Star Online Episode I & II
9. Choplifter
8. Outrun
7. Sonic The Hedgehog
6. Afterburner II
5. Rocky
4. Ghostbusters (SMS)
3. Golden Axe
2. Space Harrier
1. Shinobi

Good thread.

If we're listing series as one choice, mine would probably look like:

1. Shenmue series
2. Jet Set Radio series
3. Phantasy Star Online
Phantasy Star 4
Rez
Sonic Adventure
Virtua Fighter 4
Skies of Arcadia
Virtua Tennis
Super Monkey Ball series
Shining Force series
F-Zero GX (if you count it)
Panzer Dragoon series
Sega Rally series
Outrun series

The top three are really head and shoulders above everything else for me and among my favorite games ever, they're the only ones I would classify individually. I love everything else on the list, but I don't think I could clearly choose any of them as easily above the rest.

Anyway, though I love a lot of Sega's stuff during the Genesis and Saturn days, their Dreamcast era output is where they really stood as the best company in the industry imo, and became my favorite game company. I'm hoping they return to form next gen.

Gahiggidy is not a Sega fan.....he is a Nintendo fanboy. that why he likes these sega game because they are on a Nintendo system.

Honorable Mention - NiGHTS - I think it's a bit overrated, but there's no denying that this game has a great concept, good control (with analog stick, of course), some creative level designs (the rubber museum, especially), and is one of the finest showcases of the Saturn's power.

15. Ristar - Cute little platformer, a bit more of a kid-friendly appeal than the usual, gritty SEGA, but it's still a lot of fun, featuring good playability and some sweet graphics.

14. Super Monkey Ball - My friend got this game at launch, mainly because I was nagging him to (because it was SEGA, of course), but we are all glad we did. Nervewracking, precise gameplay... not something I thought I'd see during the "new generation" (well, this current one) when everything seems to be getting complex for complexity's sake.

13. Virtua Tennis - I have no interest in tennis whatsoever and asked for this game for Xmas on a whim... talk was going around rec.games.video.sega that this game was awesome and some of the most fun 4 player experiences. Wanting a good 4 player game to play with my friends at college (we played lots of Soul Calibur, but alas, that was only 2 player), I figured, 'what the hell'... And so I got this game, and the game was classic SEGA. Easy to pick up and play, stylish and attractive, but just so addicting. Props go to Tennis 2k2, as well, for even more refined control, and letting you play as girls.

12. Virtua Cop 3 - One of the best light-gun games... I love slowing things down to "bullet time", and the game has some awesome graphics.

11. Outrun 2 - Straight up, unpretentious racing. May not be as deep and sophisticated as some of you, but for someone who's not hardcore into racers, this is perfect. Love the scenery.

10. Streets of Rage 2 - I originally thought the SOR series was SEGA's answer to the SNES and Final Fight, but man this game really changed my mind. Some of the best gameplay for a brawler, pushing the Genesis to its limit. And who could forget about the awesome, awesome music.

9. Landstalker (Sega/Climax) - Tough as balls isometric action-RPG. Some insane dungeons and frustrating as hell puzzles, but I got such a sense of accomplishment from finally beating it. I remember I used to write to SEGA of America for help when I was little, and they would send me printed walkthroughs for the games... I got one for Taz-Mania, this game, and Shining in the Darkness.

8. Jet Grind Radio - This game defines the Dreamcast for me. So ahead of its time, totally oozing with style that few games seem to match.

7. Sonic 3 - I still think this is the best of the Sonic series. Some of the most beautiful graphics and music on Genesis, and I love the save feature (even though it makes the game too easy)

6. Shenmue - Fuck the GTA games, this is the first game to give me the expansive, highly-detailed, living and breathing world, where characters lived by their own schedules, you can search and investigate every cabinet, every picture, etc. May have been a bit dull at some points (the forklift part), but it was more of an experience, than just a regular gameplay oriented game. You really felt like Ryo, living in suburban Japan in 1986. Played like a throwback to a classic adventure game, with a rather deep combat system that I didn't really explore. And still remains to be topped, except by its sequel.

5. Skies of Arcadia - Such a huge world to explore, with lots of different, varied cultures. Some of the most impressive graphics for its time... one of the first RPGs with a full and vibrant 3D world. Lots of discoveries and stuff to find... very few RPGs nowadays emphasize exploration, and discovering the unknown... one of the things that attracted me to the genre in the first place.

4. Shining Force 2 - I always loved the Shining Force series, instead of having generic fighters for your classes, you'd actually have characters with a bit of personality. Shining Force 1 was great, but the second one, had twice as many characters, twice as many battles, and a more interesting story... Loved the whole part where you go through Creed's mansion, shrunk down to tiny, and I loved the whole deal with Oddler/OddEye. Got a bit long in the tooth at the end, tho...

3. Rez - I really can't express how much I love this game. Being a big fan of electronic dance music, stylish graphics, and SEGA, I feel sometimes that this game was made just for me :P I just love how the levels pulsate with the music. This is the number 1 game I have to show off to everybody who comes over and even remotely likes games.

2. Phantasy Star - I played RPGs before, but this game totally sealed the deal for me. The whole concepts of travelling to different planets blew my 9 year old mind away, when I first played it. The 3D dungeons really showed that SMS was much more powerful than the stalwart NES. Playing as a female was cool, too. I loved everything about this game.

1. Phantasy Star 2 - My favorite game of all time.

1. NiGHTS
2. Shenmue(series)
3. daytona USA
4. sonic 1
5. sonic cd
6. streets of rage
7. jet set radio
8. final fight CD
9. street of rage 2
10. comix zone
11. sonic adventure
12. virtua fighter
13. sega rally
14. snail trails
15. outrun 2

Rez? Give me a break. The character floats around while the player wiggles the aiming reticle a bit and releases X. That's some compelling gameplay right there.

15. Samba de Amigo
Insane with maracas, its just bizarre and super fun, which is my favorite kind of Sega

14. Sonic Adventure
I loved this game and while it does have some problems I think it is definately worthy of a Sega top 15 list

13. Super Monkey Ball 2
Lots of quick fun, and it has monkeys!

12. Phantasy Star Online
Great online game (except for cheaters), revolutionary for a console game and exciting to be a part of

11. Space Harrier
Super-Scaling Power! Fast and intense, this game may be impossible to beat but that gives you a reason to keep playing

10. Jet Grind Radio
Super stylish, great tunes, just a great game. Helped define Sega during the Dreamcast era (along with Space Channel 5, Sambe de Amigo, Seaman, Rez, Chu Chu Rocket, and all those wacky games)

9. Shenmue
First game where I felt I was truly a part of the game world, I could walk around collecting toys all day (which sounds lame, but it wasn't! Well... to some people at least). Amazing graphics, and the game was very immersive except for the crappy voice acting. great music too!

8. Crazy Taxi
Super fast and fun and intense. Easy to learn but difficult to master. A perfect pick up game, one of the most fun games ever made.

7. Virtua Fighter 4
Deep and precise and super hard to learn, this game is way too intense for me. But I keep trying anyways. Someday I WILL be able to reverse. Great graphics help too. They could have a dojo with a Virtua Master to teach people this game, it's so deep.

6. Sega Rally Championship
It has 4 tracks and 3 cars, but it's still one of the best racing games ever made. The controls were amazing, and playing time trial trying to shave precious milliseconds off your lap times was so compelling I would waste all day doing it

5. Skies of Arcadia
Great RPG with all sorts of exploration, story, and just everything an RPG could have. Best parts where pimping out the home base and beating up on the Armada of villians.

4. Panzer Dragoon Saga
Really amazing game. The dragon was sweet, and the battle system kicked all kinds of ass. Graphics were technically good for a Saturn game, and artistically were phenomonal. Just an amazing game.

3. Sonic 2
Super fast Sonic. Do we even need to say anything about this? The spin-dash made the whole game much much better

2. Outrun
Great racing game, and its 20 years old! One of the first really fast racing games, and great music helped. Yu Suzuki is gold.

1. NiGHTS
It may not be the greatest from strictly a gameplay perspective, but NiGHTS is one of the best videogame experiences I have ever had. It may be because it was my first 32-bit game, but I have never been so deeply absorbed in a game. The music and the presentation were amazing, and I really cannot say enough about NiGHTS. It is just amazing. I <3 NiGHTS

I think with all the dumb decisions Sega makes, its easy to forget how much ass they used to kick:

1) Skies of Arcadia Legends - In my opinion, the best RPG ever made. I give the nod to the GC version because it fixed a lot of shit (excessive random battles at the beginning) and added new stuff in, making it a stellar package all around. Since its dirt cheap, there's no excuse for any GC owner not to own this classic. A shame part 2 was never made, since it was confirmed in 2000. I guess sales were too low (I believe it fetched 80k in Japan and got even less for the GC version)

2) Streets of Rage 2 - The best beat em up. Seriously. Everything was perfect: length, difficulty, sound, and fun. 3 won't be on my Top 15 list because it just seemed like a shell of 2. Like they tried to copy 2 but didn't get it just right. I'm hoping someday for an SOR collection.

3) Shining Force - While the second is more refined, I think this is a classic. I played this before getting into FE but this is a great series. A shame that Neo isn't. Maybe they'll get around to making number 4 someday.

4) Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Best Sonic made. I counted them both since they lock in and interact with each other.

5) Crazy Taxi - I remember spending hundreds, maybe even thousands of hours into this game. I still remember and memorized every lyric on the soundtrack because you heard it so often. A shame the series had to go south. Still, a great classic. I even preferred the original mode to arcade mode.

6) Jet Grind Radio - The only skateboarding game I really enjoyed. Quirky enough to be interesting but not too much to where it alienates. Great level designs. Kind of easy (unless you get every one of those token things) but very fun.

7) Sonic 2 - Second best Sonic game. I thought it was the easiest Sonic to get the Chaos Emeralds. Ripping through the second half of the game as Super Sonic kicked ass. This and Sonic 3 + Knuckles, I can never get tired of these games.

8) Panzer Dragoon Orta - Best one in the series, including the RPG which I borrowed but was no great shakes. Not terrible but not worth the Ebay prices. This one is awesome. On rail shooters perfected. Plus you can even get the original in the package.

9) Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution - Budget priced on PS2. A true classic. I can't get into the series to really enjoy it but I enjoyed this game. I'm just not a hardcore VF fan but enjoyed this one.

10) Virtua Tennis series - I count them all because they are great, even the GBA one. The game impressed my friends. I remember my friends refusing to touch a DC for they were hardcore Sony fans but we all had to play VT multiplayer. They all wound up buying VT for PS2 when it came out. Looking forward to the PSP version the most.

11) Sega Rally 2 - This is where I really got into racing games. I mean, with real cars. Rallisport 2 in my mind was better but this is still an amazing game. Never got around to play the first one.

12) Sonic Adventure - Say what you want but some of the levels were amazing. I liked the city level and the jungle level. In fact, other than Big, I enjoyed the whole game. Gets too much shit in my opinion for what it is. Sonic Adventure 2 would be here instead of it wasn't for the collecting, which was much better in the first Sonic Adventure. Heroes was garbage.

13) Super Monkey Ball series - Great games. Tough but fun enough to "just try one more time." Then it becomes another. Soon, an hour passes. The GBA version kicked ass too.

14) Columns - A Tetris clone but a damn fine one. I'd like Sega to make this for handhelds someday with online gaming. All of them are great, even though they are pretty much the same.

15) Phantasy Star IV - Not the best RPG out there but very well done. Preferred this to the first three. An excellent title.

Damn, I'd have a hard time picking a top 15, especially since I haven't played much VF4:Evo which is likely Sega's best game. I'll have to come back to this one after some thought.
