Dan Swano(far, far too many to name. look up any metal album from sweden and you're likely to find his name somewhere in the booklet)

But I'm sitting here listening to "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen, and it's amazing, his vocal talent. Has there ever been anyone else that can sing just like he did? I don't think so. Not in a rock band at least.

I'm sure Freddie should have been more careful with his sexual needs and whatnot... but it's still such a shame that he died.

They probably didn't know what caused HIV when Freddie contracted it.

Also, he wasn't gay, he was bisexual. He had at least one longtime girlfriend. So many people make unsubtle remarks about his sexuality, but not many people seem to know the truth.

Buckley
Bowie
and... I don't know?

Fiona Apple? Bryan Ferry? Chris Isaak?

EDIT: And I love this board. Mentioning Buckley and Eno (previous thread) would only elicit blank stares in the social circles that I bump into.

Great choices :)

Truth be told, i reckon Buckley makes the rest of the people listed sound like shit - but he is not purely a rock singer (except freddy).

Unless I'm blind I've seen 2 pages and not one mention of Layne Staley WTF?

OK I'm blind! Props to Vicious tho...

Layne is still to this day the best live voice i've ever had the priveledge to hear.

Other than that i'd give props to

Roger Daltrey - still bellowing it out, sounded fantastic at Live8
Chino Moreno - amazingly inventive
Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs ) - from the heart, a great voice

What is wrong with you people? No one mentioned:

He IS in the Rock hall of fame.

Not a top 3 of all time. but some of my faves are

Axl Rose (GnR)
Chris Cornell (Audioslave/Soundgarden)
Sebastian Grainger (Death from Above 1979)
Frank Black (Pixies)

Whitfield Crane
Too cool! Whitfield rocks. One of the most versatile, but sadly underrated vocalists from the '80s.

Alot of the biggies (Plant, Mercury, Bowie etc) have already been listed, so I'll skip 'em ;)

Geoff Tate-To this day, my favorite vocalist of all time. Incredible range and expression.
Roy Kahn
Russel Allen-Gets better and better with every album.

Special nod to Daniel Gildenlow, I think this dudes vocal cords are made of some super elastic polymer. Does some of the most amazing things I've ever heard.

Tut tut.

PJ Harvey

Ooh, you bitch, Harvey was going to be MINE!

PJ Harvey, Nick Cave, Chris Cornell.

But there's countless more

dick valentine from electric six - best rock vocalist ever!!!

and jeah dave grohl and the foofighters sound like shit - on cd and live!

I don't think any male singer at least in my lifetime has matched the vocal range of Prince.

Vedder sounds great in that it always sounded unaltered to me.

I'm always suprised at how nice of a voice Jack Black has.

Janis Joplin puts most modern rock singers (male or female) to shame. I would also add Joe Cocker but his vocal style seems to grate on some people.

Range is my criterion

Freddie Mercury (reasons obvious)

Paul McCartney ("Why Don't We Do It in the Road" followed by "I Will")

whos the lead singer of system of a down that guy can blow. he's got alot of power behind his voice.

oh and of course chris cornell he can sing mellow or peel the paint off your walls :p

lots others, like Scott Weiland as well that are great.

the guy from Dredg and the guy from Nada Surf have incredible voices.

Listen to Killians Red from Nada Surf and Same ol Road from Dredg and you will know.

Eric

Right now: Chris Cornell or Zach De LaRocha. Cornell has the range, and De LaRocha is an emotional powderkeg. One of my favorite quotes about Cornell was that he sounded like Ronnie James Dio on a tequila hangover.

Thread should've ended when I mentioned Mercury, I dunno what you guys are wasting your time for. I mean, jesus, the note he hits (I think it's him) at the end of the mid-section of Bohemian Rhapsody was liek batshit insane.

pfft, he spaz's his arms all the time =p
he doesn't move much, but you can so tell he's into it. plus, his voice is insane.

these three new acoustic tracks they put out are too good for words. he has the best live voice EVER. these acoustic tracks solidify this in history.

The show I went to was awesome and we were right up there but he was really mellow.

There's one fantastic voice I'm pretty sure noone of you have ever heard. His name is Thomas Dybdahl. Search for him on iTunes or something and listen to "From Grace" on his first of three solo albums, "That Great October Sound". He's often likened to Jeff Buckley.

He's in a band too, called "The National Bank", a kind of who's who in Norwegian music-band. Listen to "Tolerate". Strongly recommended, but his solo stuff is even better.

But all in all, Freddie Mercury.

Fer fuck's sake people. Not one mention of John Lennon?!?

My list:

John Lennon
Thom Yorke
Frank Black
PJ Harvey
David Bowie
Michael Stipe
David Byrne
Brian Wilson
Neil Young
Kurt Cobain
Jeff Buckley

Man...I was about to bitch this thread out at the lack of mentioning Bruce Dickinson, but finally I see two more mentions aside from mine and that settled me down. As much as I love Metallica (I really do) the amount of votes Hetfield received is insane. Dickinson >>> Hetfield.
