Top Gun: Maverick training feature the - the actors were flying in real F-18s

(cant watch the video at work) Did they use the 2 seat variant of the F18 to let them fly in it? I recall the Navy saying the actors would not be allowed to fly the planes...

Imagine doing all that work and then the film gets delayed again and again.

I wonder what that level of training and practical shooting cost versus all CGI and a fancy greenscreen cockpit simulator (which I'm sure they used as well in some cases).

Not that we get many jet movies these days, but it would be cool if all the practical shots help reestablish what a jet movie "should" look like versus the magic camera CGI stuff we have been getting.

Tom go into space yet for the next film?

Nope they let them play the NES Top Gun game and when they could land, that was enough to qualify.

Pretty cool that it's practical effects, that's what I thought based on the trailers, but my instinct was "dang CGI has really improved".

Knowing it's practical effects (probably with a mix of cgi) sold me on watching it.

Just over a month to go, almost at the finish line

Its pretty interesting because in the original Tom couldn't even hold up his stomach so they just ended up filming a ton on-set with a rig.

Not even going to watch the video. IMAX with the loudest and best sound I can drive to within a 50 mile radius for this is a must and has been a given since the latest release date was announced.

Well yea. The first movie was like the biggest recruitment tool the USAF Navy (Brainfart, sorry) ever had. Would be a missed opportunity to not be as realistic as possibly.

If you watched Top Gun and then joined the Air Force to launch F-14 Tomcats off a carrier then whoooo boy you got what you deserved :p

Director of Oblivion and Tron Legacy you say?

All In Meme GIF

You do realize that they were in the Navy right?

Like, it never even mentions the air force.

He's not lying, the USAF saw over a 500% increase in recruitment after the movie came out. The movie made people interested in being fighter pilots, not just Navy Fighter Pilots. Plus the Air Force is a WAYYYY nicer job than a Navy job.

Nah, that was totally Iron Eagle :p

That's fair. I heard there was actually an increase in all armed forces recruitment after that movie.

Damn I thought I'd be playing volleyball with hot guys, why am I spending ten hours a day scrubbing toilets?

This is not what I thought they meant by "playin with the boys!"

Movie looks awesome. Will be there opening weekend. Hopefully they do enough storywise, the cast looks good enough... but as long as they deliver on the fighter jet action, which they seem to have done, it's going to have been worth the price of admission.

lol Im done falling for this bs. Isnt the entire point of acting is to ACT like you are flying the plane? What the hell are they doing putting actors through insane shit like this. It's like when DiCaprio ate and barfed out the raw bison liver. Who asked for this? If anything it pulled me out of the movie because the actual person DiCaprio was playing was used to eating raw stuff.

Dont care for the new POV trend in these movies. GoPro can suck a dick. They made a huge deal about how Tom Cruise was flying the helicopter in MI6 and controlling the camera while doing death defying stunts and Im like meh. it's clear the camera is attached to the helicopter and its like im watching a low budget movie without a cinematographer. The director of that movie is great at framing action but he totally phoned in the helicopter chase because well, half of it was directed by Tom Cruise who isnt a director.

Now compare that to this incredible crash sequence in Black Hawk Down. Who cares if they used CG and didnt crash a helicopter with Jeremy Piven inside. What's next? Jeremy Piven had to die in real life to make it authentic?

I admire Tom Cruise for doing his own stunts but just like with over the top elaborate one shot takes, this kinda shit just takes me out of the movie.

Top gun is my favorite film. I am a huge aviation buff. If nothing else this movie will be a love letter to aviation. I have no idea how the story will end up but it will be very pretty you can tell.

I want the final shot to be Tom on full afterburner towards an ominous storm straigh outta The Final Countdown!

Then we get Maverick set in every time period imaginable :P

If they let the Cruise Missile fly the jets, he would.

If I remember correctly he is a certified pilot on a lot of different airframe including Helicopters.
So He would probably wouldn't do too bad in flight, launching from an aircraft Carrier or worse, landing, that's another level entirely.
