Toukiden 2 |OT| Action Hunting Gameplay Feat. Open World

It's worth noting this is Cross-play between PS4 & Vita but no PC it's a pretty big feature this, combining both online userbase into one.

Because of this I'll be buying it on PS4 instead of PC which i was originally going to do, the online userbase of Toukiden 2 will be much more active and longetivity more on PlayStation.

Even without Cross-play PS4 version would've still be the most active, wonder how online in this game will fare on PC after a while..

Just played the demo. I loved the first one on Vita. Never played it on PS4 and my first thoughts are... this is way uglier and janky than I remember on the Vita. Even the text and menus are uglier than I recall, especially on the PS4 since they're often pixelated. I think this one is a pass for me.
Well they did create this for Vita, PS3, PS4 in Japan originally, budget constraints etc the game shares some assets between each but imo it's not too bad especially for this type of game

God eater had an okay userbase on pc for a while. I'm only getting it on pc if it seems like its a good port (or equal to god eater's ports on pc)

I wouldn't pick a version based on MP playerbase, unless you have friends to play with.

Just like the previous games there's little reason to go online with random people, considering the AI is still better than us at the game so you never feel a mission is too hard to play solo - unlike GE/GE2 postgame. Plus, MP cuts out the open world part, it's still mission based. Not that it's a terrible thing since I wouldn't want to join a game just to follow the host running around, but MP will be pretty different from SP.

Overall Toukiden is much easier than MonHun. If you're a MonHun vet, you're going to find it easy throughout, tbh.

I guess that is true but I actually found the later stuff in Toukiden Kiwami to actually be a decent challenge (except for the final boss). Monsters became relentless and did so much damage.

GER AI is far from Kiwami, but at least they are not as bad as vanilla Soul Sacrifice.
TBH though, Kiwami and SSD AI is just too good.
I do hope MP gets harder cause Phase 1 is almost too easy.

Normal monsters are equivalent of Low Rank in MH so they're expected to be easy.

While the graphics may have suffered a bit the open world is really refreshing for a game in the hunting genre. It's nice to have a sense of exploration and such. :) Also the Age of Peace, at least the more 'big tree' sections are really visually nice imho.

Still need that Pro patch though...

Just confirming since I don't know the answer, you do make one character and carry them between single player and multiplayer, right?

That is correct. Just like Monster Hunter.

Should be noted that the open-world is freely explorable in SP only. However based on the demo there might be 'patrols' that at least let you and friends roam around specific areas for a bit.

I've been playing the demo and can you explore the open world and otherworld only by yourself? Is it only for missions that your party goes with you?

Cant find any reviews for this other than FAMITSU which was 36/40 and one other review from some blogger which was a 9/10. I love these types of games as im always searching to scratch my pSO itch.

Any thoughts from any of you guys playing it?

Main the aerial Chain&Sickle for maximum fun.

Here are a few:

RPGSITE - 8/10
Pound for pound, Toukiden 2 is an impressive entry. The majority of the cast are legitimately interesting for one reason or another, complemented by Hidari's wonderful artwork. It's assisted by a wealth of content to delve into and a generous amount of equipment to procure. Yes, it may not always be meaningful, but fans will appreciate what the game presents.

While it may not go far enough to vastly improve on its previous entry, this series continues to offer plenty of appeal for someone like me who could not get into Monster Hunter due to how it skimps on the story. Bottom line, Toukiden 2 is a great option for those looking to get into this type of genre. It doesn't even feel as much of a chore this time to take down an Oni. And really, considering Monster Hunter hasn't been on consoles in a very long time (not counting the online-only game), it's certainly worth a look for that alone.

Playstation Lifestyle - 8/10
Toukiden 2 is a huge step up from its predecessor, and is a smart evolution of the gameplay that Monster Hunter fans have come to know. By opting for a more story-focused experience, it manages to forego feeling like a grind, and the open-world aspect allows players to really take in their surroundings. While there are still some shortcomings, such as a sometimes confusing map and lackluster multiplayer, this is an action game that is worth checking out, even for those that haven't traditionally been fans of hunting games.

Dualshockers - 9/10
Toukiden 2 shows that an already impressive series can be made even better by taking chances on new systems. The story stays in scope of the premise throughout the game even after accepting multiple side-quests, there's always clear knowledge of what to do next. Although the open world map may be intimidating to some, the game offers easy quick traveling options to seamlessly get players from one place to another. After playing the game for well over 30 hours, I feel like I can continue playing for another 100 and with that I happily say, "Bring it on!"

The Sixth Axis - 8/10
In short, Toukiden 2 is everything a sequel should be. Instead of lazily expanding on the original game, which would have been so easy to do, Omega Force actually went back to the drawing board, completely reinventing those parts that needed work. By streamlining much of the dull admin and encasing the game in a larger open world, Toukiden 2 manages to break free from the pack. As a result, it's easily one of the subgenre's best entries to date and one that, in some ways, is preferable to Monster Hunter.

Cogconnected - 8.2/10

Toukiden 2 is packed with new concepts, battle mechanics, an open-world and an evolved application of previously existing elements that both fans and newcomers to the franchise will be spoiled with and enjoy. The inclusion of more freedom and variability were needed aspects of it previous titles that this sequel successfully implements. While the visuals are not the biggest selling point of the game, the amusing and action-packed world of the Oni, historical Japan, and use of spiritualism is a breath of fresh air and a worthy alternative to the Monster Hunter genre.

Push Square - 8/10

Minor annoyances aside, Toukiden 2 has some truly addictive gameplay and tonnes of content to chew through. The game's dripping with atmosphere and looks great, with plenty of varied, large open world areas to explore. Meanwhile, the battle system is satisfyingly fast paced, and nothing quite compares to the power trip of ripping off the body parts of a giant demon.

Twinfinite - 4/5

All around, Toukiden 2 feels like it takes a lot of what made the earlier games feel a bit flat and fixes it up. New features and open-world exploration set it further apart from the Monster Hunter franchise — not because there's anything wrong with Monster Hunter, of course, but because it's important for a game to feel like it's own unique thing. The action-first gameplay keeps things moving, and allows players to feel truly badass while not worrying too much about other things. Interested parties can pick up Toukiden 2 today on the Playstation Store or your local retailer for both PlayStation 4 and Vita.

Cgmag Online - 7/10

Overall, Toukiden 2 isn't a bad game but there are enough flaws to stop it from being what could've been a great. I believe fans of the hunting style action RPG will easily get the most out of this, enjoying what they already love about the genre as they're introduced to Toukiden 2's new ideas. If you're not already a fan of this type of game however, it's unlikely that this title will be the one to change your mind.

LaPs4 - 7/10 (Spanish)

Also the PS4 and Vita version are up on the PSN store now.

The completely arbitrary time on which stuff comes up on PSN store every tuesday, named after the poor soul that's (probably) in charge of doing it manually every week.

So I know the only thing you get from importing data from Kiwami is outfits but the demo had no ability to import. Is that in the full release?

I'll be able to check it out myself in just under two hours but got class soon. :(

Really looking forward to this, I loved the demo a hell of a lot more than I expected. I have a friend to play with but I might be interested in mixing with some folks. :3

Just to be 110% sure, though, cross-region play (i.e. between JP version and English verison) is enabled via that one option and switching it to all regions, right? Friend has the JP version and it'll be a bummer if we can't hang together.

I have a 4k display and a bunch of custom resolutions above 1080p. That's as far as it goes, at least without extra tinkering.

I wonder if it saves this in a cfg file somewhere that you can edit. I'm actually OK with 1080p despite playing on a 4k display as long as 60fps actually works, but it would be nice to bump it up.

Its good fun so far, playing the demo. I want to see what the gameworld is like before I buy, but have £65 in my wallet funds after getting a refund on Mass Effect.

Durante have checked in Night of Azure that it actually support arbitrary resolution, only that you need to changed it from the registry because the launcher didn't have the option. Probably this is another case of that.

It runs just fine in full screen though, it's just that it won't go over 1080p.

Nope, I checked and it stores the index of the resolution in that list, no reference to the actual resolution. I couldn't find a plain text config file anywhere either.

How's the performance? I have a 760 GTX 2 GB and I'm interested in getting into the series with this one.

Can my card play it at 1080/60?

Sounds shame really. I personally don't affected because my monitor is just measly 1080p but it does sucks for 4K owner.

Sooo... am I crazy? I feel like this looks way better on PS4 than the demo did.

I feel like I noticed it right away in the character creation tool.

Edit: I'm crazy. I forgot I adjusted some settings on my TV last night. :D

Erf. I think some of their game can have their resolution increased with cheatengine, maybe it will be one of them...

They got me to buy Atelier Sophie since it was a decent port ( even if there is some .. strange choice of ps3 asset in it.. ), but sadly it seems it will stay an exception, not the rule.

The rule of KT port is....no rule. Their quality is so erratic that no rule is basically their rule lol

Thanks for sharing with us. I can't help but to wonder how many thousands of sales a 1080p resolution cap will cost them in the long run. I can't be the only one who's decided against purchasing it solely based on the fact that it doesn't support anything above 1080p.

They need to stop letting interns whose laptop screens only go up to 1080p to code their games...

Is the Pro 1080/60, vs regular PS4 1080/30? Why would they lock the PC resolution?! KT was getting better with their ports!

Pretty sure there is no pro patch.

It's 1080/30 on both PS4 and Pro.

Also goddamn the Outfits you get from completing Kiwami are so overpowered. While yeah their actual defense isn't that much better than the stuff you most likely have. Your elemental resistances go up a metric-shit-fuck-ton.

Damnit. Are they tied to beating Kiwami or just playing it? I have 90 hours in that game but can't remember if I've actually finished the main storyline.

If the game actually has better performance than the first one, which I'd like to see someone confirm or deny, then it may be a better port in purely objective terms.

I think it's just for playing. I think.

It's in the same menu as when you go to transfer your data from the demo to the full game.

Also has anyone figured out how to invite NPCs to your party to explore in the open world? Thus far the only time I've had them in my party is when the game puts them in. Some reason there is no way to just add them to go free roaming.

It does seem to run pretty smooth. They did actually confirm in an interview that they can't talk about Pro specific stuff yet. So I guess that means we will be getting it.
