What are some sports trades that were supposed to make teams instant title contenders but didn't pan out?

I'll go with two Cleveland centric trades:

Odell Beckham Jr and the Browns, had their moments.

When the Reds brought Ken Griffey Jr. back to Cincinnati, that was to be an amazing get. He did give part of his salary to Barry Larkin to keep him there, but nothing really came of it.

During the 1996 offseason, Charles Barkley was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Mark Bryant, and Chucky Brown. Barkley chose Houston specifically because he hoped to win an NBA Championship with the team. Unfortunately for him and the Rockets, they ran into peak John Stockton/Karl Malone in the playoffs the next two seasons.

Unfortunately Barkley ran into a bear hugging Malone on a screen that knocked them out one season.

Mbappe to Real Madrid lol

just kidding ...
That one is shaping up to be a predictable disaster, but Real were already at the top when they signed him. He’s just knocking them down the ladder.

Same sport, how about Paul Pogba to Man Utd? Return of the prodigal son, world record transfer fee, hogged all the headlines while getting outmatched by almost every midfielder he faced.

Gretzky to kings. Kings did much better but never won a cup when he was there.

Adding to the pain, oilers beat kings a bunch of times in the playoffs after he left and even won another cup without him.
