Trevor Noah of the Daily Show has been covering the Philando Castile ruling the past few days and I feel it truly deserves to be seen by everyone. Especially his latest bit that aired last night.

His dissection of what has transpired really is depressing and it really highlights the struggles and challenges faced by people of color in the United States. Watching the raw footage was already infuriating, and then taking in the whole picture with context of racism, and the expectations of citizens versus the police really begins to mess with your head.

I'm from a european country with a reasonably well trained police force and I'm white so I've never felt unsafe whenever I'm around a cop.
But after watching this I'm sure I wouldn't want to be around a cop over there either. No one that eager to shoot another person should be allowed to carry a gun.

The most telling part I think is how the woman sitting next to the guy that just got guned down was more calm and level headed than that cop.
What the fuck kind of training do they even get over there? No excuse for the obvious racism either.

There was this experiment done, I can't remember what it was called, where they had both white and black police run these simulations. And they had to both white and black people with either a gun or a cell phone in their hand then had either/or popup in different poses and the police had to either shoot or not by attempting to recognize what was in the hand. Well both white and black police shot at the black guy pop up at the same rate showing that even black people view black people as more dangerous.

This will not changed until we stop predisposing ourselves to all things black being bad. In almost every show or movie the black guy is usually the bad guy, on the news they only seem to show black people doing bad things, and we never seem to see black people doing goods things in the media or the content we consume. So from birth we have brainwashed an entire population on a particular race being dangerous. This is why we see people become less racist when they move to cities or other very diverse areas because they are actually witnessing the good in all people instead of being force fed all the bad people do. We have a long way to go to remedy this.

My dad has had his drivers liscense for over 30 years and he's been driving all over the contenent for the past 10 years due to his job and he hasn't been stopped even once.

It's more common than you think. If you're black you basically need to be prepared to get stopped by the cops multiple times per month for whatever shitty reason they want to come up with. And every single one of those stops could mean your brutal death by police.

After the verdict I kept a radio silence on this, happened right around when my daughter was born. Having see these now, while holding my daughter I'm fucking angrier than before. That mans daughter will grow up knowing her father died for just being himself, and that she is in full risk of the same thing. Before my daughter was born I struggled with the thought in my mind that I hoped she looks more like her mother than she does me. I've been stopped numerous times, had my car checked front and back(I didn't know better that I shouldn't have let them do it but really I wouldn't risk arguing my rights with them either at this point). My daughter likely won't have to deal with any of this as we don't share the same skin color. It fucks with me theres a part of me that's grateful for that.

There's a great Twitter thread about how for some people (a lot of people) the fact that he was stopped 10 times in the last six years isn't evidence of discrimination or bias but further evidence that he was 'dangerous"

I can't because it's so completely outside of my experience. I can definitely emphasize though.
Like I've said in my other post I've never felt afraid around a cop because they're not like that over here at all. They're extremely polite, friendly and always willing to help (it's their job after all) and only use force when absolutely necessary and even then with restraint. It's not perfect and there have been some incidents here and there, but never anything of this magnitude and certainly not as often as it happens in America.
'Worst' experience I've ever had with one was recieving a stern look from one because I was riding my bike through the mall when I was 12.


I'm looking at this from a distance of course, but my impression is that stuff like this is almost becoming the norm over there. "Oh, just another police shooting".
