if true that is awful, Vampire: Bloodlines was flawed but it was a good game. so it looks like we wont see a patch... to fix those spelling mistakes...

no return on Source Engine licensing?

Really bad news :(

But their stubborness to stay with the PC market cost them. They should have gone the console route like Bioware/Bethesda did. The PC market , except a few big titles is as good as dead right now.

Bloodlines could have worked on the xbox! (with a bit [major] of an overhaul on the game engine) i think the xbox rpg market would eat up a game like that.

i played the game with my xbox pad and it worked beautifully...
such a shame.

Arcanum was awesome, it kept me entertained for a long time and made me remember the goodness of fallout 1 and 2.

Damn it! Bullfrog, Black isle, Looking glass and now Troika. All gone.

Trokia was overrated in that thier design ambtions outstripped thier technincal prowess.

Yes, but even with those bugs taken into account, the content they delivered was well worth it.

:(

Yesterday I talked to a friend about how sad it was that bethesda bought the fallout license instead of troika or obsidian. And now this...

Sad sad sad.

Is Bioware the only company of this sort left? Obsidian is off to a really assy start with KOTOR II.

Do you really have to be a PhD Doctor to pull of making Western PC RPGs? Huh?

Edit: The bugginess was unforgivable though.

Yes because it wasn't like the publisher doesn't pick when games ship to retail. Dumb ass.

Actually Bloodlines was supposed to be finished a long time before being released because of the half life 2, source engine stuff.

So they had some extra time...

You don't know when they handed in the gold master. Activison sat on the goldmaster. Developers have no problem taking extra time on their games, publishers don't want to pay for it.

A lot of the old guard will be heading out in the transition to next gen. Just look at how many of the old-time companies have died already.

Depressing news. It always sucks to see people lose their jobs, and Troika's dedication to the RPG genre was commendable.

That said, I just can't feel that sorry about it. Troika's games were so unbelievably bug-ridden. I bought Temple of Elemental Evil at release, and I'm still mad.... Blame the dev, blame the publisher, whatever...

Regardless, best of luck to those involved in the unfortunate proceedings.

Now that I think of it, it makes me think of the latest Steely Dan album.

"Attention all gamers, last call, for the last Computer RPG developer. Everything must go!"

:(

Actually, there was an official patch released a bit ago that fixed a number of issues. Try checking http://www.planetvampire.com/ for the patch. It should be around there somewhere.

Tim Cain will still make games, so I'm not worried.

I haven't played Arcanum, but the demo of Temple of Elemental Evil isn't too hot. The interface is horrible, nowhere near as elegant as the infinity engine's scheme. :(

Is it really that big of a loss? While Arcanum was an awesome concept it wasn't done that well. As for Bloodlines it ran so poorly and was as glitchy as heck that I played it only for a few hours.

Sure. But Troika games had the best RPG nut menus ever. :)

The level of bugginess in their games was pretty bad and totally unacceptable. It's easy to place the blame on the publisher for pushing the game out before it's done, but it's not like they were the only ones that had that problem.

I'm sorry, but if you can't schedule correctly to know what your studio is capiable of, then you fail. Trokia had LOTS of time to polish Bloodlines, but choose to include more content. Adding more content and not giving enough time to test appropriatly was their fault, not Activision's

Also they really wanted to do PC RPG, and they just don't sell that well anymore. They were so desperate they were looking for console jobs. But publishers were unwilling to work with them due to their track record for buggy software and poor planning.

Reason's why Trokia closed:
HL2 being delayed. Contract with Source didn't allow them to ship before HL2.
Poor Managment decisions
Putting entire companies future into landing Fallout license
Known for releasing REALLY buggy software

Putting entire companies future into landing Fallout license

Um, what?

I heard that they wanted it, but they never really pu the entire company's future in it. Their problem was alienating their fanbase by refusing to make a sequel to Arcanum. They paid the price for their creativity. Its all about sequels now.

Well considering they were having to let people go before Bloodlines shipped. The people that were left over were working on their Fallout/PA game for pretty much free.

They put their attention on getting the Fallout IP, only to have it go to someone else.

The PA game looked nothing like fallout.

They were thick into trying to land the Fallout license. they probably didn't make it look 'exactly' like fallout for legal reasons.

no one wants to work with you if you release buggy games after buggy game.

Harsh but true.

Sad to see Troika go, but all their releases have been bug ridden messes.

That is why I haven't picked up Vampire yet, even though I'm very interested in it.

As many of you may have already heard, Troika has laid off all of its employees and is closing its doors due to our inability to secure funding for future projects. We have not yet made the decision as to whether Troika Games as an entity will regroup and pursue future projects or simply cease to exist.

We want to thank all of our fans for their support these past seven years, it has really meant a lot to us that there were people out there who enjoyed our games enough to create fan-sites and follow our progress as a company. But we especially want to thank all of our employees - we had the pleasure of working with the some of the most dedicated, hard working, creative people in the industry, and we really appreciate all that they did for Troika.

.

Tycho over at PA summed up my opinion of Troika perfectly:

Troika (for those of you with a concussion) is the little company that couldn't, producing games of marvelous, unprecedented promise coupled with epic lapses in technical execution. The company was a hole that great ideas crawled half-way out of, so I hope you'll pardon me if I don't dab the corner of my eye with a handkerchief and try to look strong. There were undeniably talented people there. Hopefully they'll end up someplace where that kind of thing matters.

You know I'm playing Fallout 2 for the first time right now and yup... Bioware is the only company who can create these kinds of games with a somewhat halfway acceptable number of bugs.

I've had to restart the freaking SECOND TOWN in Fallout 2 two times, because quest important NPCs disappear or never show up. What the hell?
