Welcome, El Presidente, back to your beautiful palace on the wonderful, glorious island nation of Tropico! I, Penultimo, your most excellent second-in-command and most loyal follower, am extremely happy to see you return and am most definitely not at all planning to overthrow you at any moment. I’m so happy to see you back that I’ve prepared this piece of simulation software to reacquaint you with the running of our little tropical home. Well, that is to say, I had some devoted underlings create it. Please enjoy it!

Once again, you will rule over Tropico with an iron fist, making our beautiful island the envy of all other nations while crushing any dissidents foolish enough to oppose you. But not only that: you’ll also have to juggle the demands of the era, from Colonialism to Cold War Fever all the way to Modern Times. And – even more frightening than global politics – lies yet another challenge: your own family, who will most certainly be clamouring for positions of influence and prestige. Sycophants, the lot of them!

Not only that, but we’ve finally developed technology sufficient to enable multiple El Presidentes to inhabit the same island! Yes, that’s right, for the first time ever up to four players can rise to power and found and run their own cities on the same map, co-operating or competing as they so choose!

Tropican engineers have also managed to add in a host of new and improved changes that we think will result in a simulation that is no mere iteration of the past, but instead, something greater: an entirely new revolution in Tropican Simulation. Yes, I can confidently say that with El Presidente at the helm – perhaps even more than one of him (or her!) – our great nation of Tropico is set for great things. Great things indeed. Viva El Presidente!

TIME MARCHES ON: Curry favour with the motherland while fermenting revolution during Colonial Times, shield your nation during the two World Wars, rule a tinpot dictatorship as the US and USSR collide and milk the hell out of wealthy gringo tourists during Modern Times – and beyond! Face the challenges and opportunities of each era, and emerge victorious!

FAMILY MATTERS: El Presidente may be eternal, but individuals come and go. Thankfully, family members can step up to the pitch – so long as they’re provided for while waiting in the wings, of course. Skill up your personal dynasty and appoint them as ambassadors, generals, and more! Fund it all through embezzled cash - what’s good for El Presidente and his family is good for Tropico!

TRADER JOSÉ: With time comes trade, and periods of selling high and buying low that will fluctuate alongside the political situation and your relationships with foreign powers. Control Tropican trade fleets, micromanage deals and ensure your island nation rides the international markets for as long as possible.

R(ESEARCH) AND R(ENOVATION): Bring old buildings into the modern age while utilising the mysterious secrets of science for Tropican gain! To be honest, I, Penultimo, am not entirely sure what this actually means, but the scientists are telling me it’s good news.

FIGHTING FOG: Our cartographers have unaccountably lost the ability to accurately map the island without the eyes of El Presidente personally seeing the landscape for himself. How strange… anything from lost ruins to killer animals to savage native tribes might be hidden in the mists! On the flip side, communication technology means we finally have rudimentary control of our armed forces. Glory to Tropico!

IT’S ART, NOT PROPAGANDA: Teams of Tropican Artists have been hard at work making visual things for all kinds of buildings and knickknacks and that kind of thing. I’m not an art man, myself, you understand, but it sure does look pretty!

THERE CAN BE MORE THAN ONE: What’s better than one El Presidente? FOUR EL PRESIDENTES! We don’t know how it’s going to pan out, but it should be pretty entertaining!

Apologies for the low-quality/beta/alpha screenshots, the Tropican Ministry of Harmony is working overtime to prevent actual preview information from really spilling forth.

VIVA EL PRESIDENTE! VIVA TROPICO!!!

Suikoguy

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
The Comedy of Part 4 was top notch, with the most amusing scenarios I've experienced in a simulation game. I hope it retains much of that.

Nice OT. Between this and everything else that has released this week, I'm strapped for time to play them all!

Hopefully there's more of an improvement over Tropico 4 than there was between Tropico 3 and 4. Tropico 4 seemed more like an expansion really, rather than a new game.

The Tropico franchise is great, but you're right, Omerta was fucking terrrrrrrible

is this similar to Civilization?

Closer to SimCity but, these days, better. Or Patrician?

Great OT!

Looking forward to my weekend with this, Transistor and Killer is Dead... but who am I kidding? I'll be playing nothing but Tropico 5!

Si yo te toco una rumba me la tiene que bailar.

Forgot this was so close to release. I hope the early impressions are good.

I'm still unclear how the multiplayer is supposed to work.

The descriptions of the multi keep using "same map" and "same island" interchangeably. The trailer implies the only two things you can do with other players is invade each other's islands or trade resources.

So can two players be building on the same island, or are they separate islands and you can only trade/invade? Because if it's the latter that's kinda disappointing :/ I wanted full co-op in the same island when they announced multiplayer.

Repeating myself but game is 20€/$27 on Nuuvem (best deal around atm) and it's probably only until release tomorrow.
Nice OT in any case :)

In the multiplayer trailer you can notice on the minimap two players are on the same island. I don't know if it's always the case, but it's definitely possible

Really excited for this game. Anything more known about the multiplayer except for the trailer? Also what difference do the era's make?

Such a huge Tropico fan but I've just bought a ton of games recently and I'm not sure if I can afford this right now. Plus I've really just started getting into Tropico 4...

Apparently it's selling well :

Ahead of the global release of the PC version of Tropico 5 on May 23rd, the Kalypso Media Group is thrilled to announce that the game has set new internal pre-sale records for the entire company.
Not only has the title topped the Amazon pre-sale charts for many weeks in several countries, but Kalypso can also reveal that the Digital distribution pre-orders on Steam have exceeded expectations. Tropico 5 has achieved four times the number of orders secured over its predecessor Tropico 4, which was released in 2011.

Please be good and all will be perfect ;(

I hope you enjoyed your little rebellion, irritant. But remember, what SHODAN gives she is more than able to take away.
Nice OT!

There are not a lot of these types of games made anymore, so very glad to see Haemimont doing such a great job with the franchise.

I was wondering whether we'd get an OT for this, nice job.

Yeah, part 4 was really amusing during the campaign, I hope this keeps it up.

I hope the campaign is half as good as 4's. It was hilarious and very engaging.
I guess we'll have to conquer the map more than once during it, since we have now a multiplayer mode, I just hope it won't turn too much into some RTS aberration or something.

"El presidente, do you want us to tamper with the election?"

Been playing these since part 1. Now I'm afraid my aging computer won't run number 5 that well :(

Personally I felt that T3 was better than T4, but I definitely enjoyed them both (still haven't beat T4). Maybe by the time I beat T4, T5 will be down to the usual bargain prices + all DLC =D.

Hopefully the music is more in the vein of T3, the T4 music was trash. Luckily some people figured out how to mod the T3 music into T4.

It looks like the vanilla game integrates some of the concepts of the Modern Times expansion. Which is great because I beat the main campaign in Tropico 4 and clocked it at about 60+ hours. I was pretty sick of the game that I never got around to playing with the expansion, even though it looked pretty cool.

For $27 I think I'm gonna jump on this. I don't have much time left but I've been sitting around wondering what to play lately so it's not like I have much else on my plate gaming-wise at the moment.

T4 is simpler in its mechanics I think. Once you get the groove of it I'd wager it's the easiest Tropico game (with T1 being the hardest IMO).

Might be the best revenge tale told in gaming. So good.

Anybody know when GMG will be releasing their keys and if there's a Steam pre-load available?

I need this in my veins right now lol.

The review embargo is up as of 4pm today. Here's my review, a 4 out of 5:

Saving Content said:
The French novelist Alphonse Karr wrote, “The more things change, the more they stay the same”. This is true for Tropico 5. For as feature-rich, improved, beautiful it is, the new additions that make it different from it’s predecessors, still ends up feeling awfully similar when you actually sit down to play it.

Tropico 5‘s list of changes are many. The first thing you’ll notice upon starting a new game is there aren’t any prefabricated personas to take on. No longer are you able to play as Fidel Castro, Eva Peron, Che Guevara, etc. You may think this takes away from the personality or charm of the series, but it’s those who surround you during your rule that fill in that gap. You now create your own character, with many zany clothing and hair options. This creates the beginnings of your dynasty. As you progress, you can purchase levels using your Swiss bank account to enhance them, let them retire, have children to be heirs who can be added to your dynasty that maxes out for a total of seven slots.

You can read the rest of it here: http://www.savingcontent.com/2014/05/22/tropico-5-review/
