Could someone please helpo me set up a LAN between my two home computers. I try using the setup wizard in XP but it is just not seeming to work. Any help would be nice. Thanks

I'd like to know how to set up wireless communication between two computers using their Wireless G connections... Is that even possible?

Yea my network always fucks up when I try to share files. It worked in the beggining then it just stopped. Then I got it to work and it stopped again. Now it wont work at all and I cant get it back up.

Are you guys all running Windows? I can help if anyone's using a Mac and running OS X, but my Windows networking is rusty at best unfortunately.

Ok my computer shows both computers when i click on My Network Places and then click on show workgroup computers but on my moms it says something like the server cannot be accessed to generate list

not enough info

are you connecting thru a hub/switch, directly, what os(s), wireless/wired

people are not mind readers we don't know your setup

for xp

if you have a router, put both computers in the same workgroup and set them to obtain ip addresses automatically. your router should give out addresses in the 192.168.0.x format most likely.

do ipconfig on both machines from dos prompt and make sure they have

192.168.0.x address
255.255.255.0 subnet
192.168.0.1 (which will probably be the router address)

then setup your shares. that should work. you can statically assign ip addresses to both machines as above if your router doesn't do dynamic.

thats the basic setup for xp with a router on a home network anyway.

both conntecting through a linksys router/switch

comp 1 :

You're good to go. Just set up the same workgroup name in both PCs next:

Control Panel > System > Computer name.

I did that, theyre both in same workgroup. My computer recognizes it but i cant gain access to the other computer. The other computer doesnt come up with anything at all.

OK both are supposed to be in same workgroup. Computer 1 shows both computers but access is denied to computer 2. Computer 2 says access is denied to the workgroup... Please help
