Sooo, full disclosure: I'm an American.
Here's my question: Why doesn't the world just pass us by? We have 300mil people in our country. There's billions more than us everywhere else in the world. We clearly have no interest on leading at anything anymore, and we're lead by a government that is willingly and openly lying to it's citizenry about basic facts while the citizenry turns around and laps it up. This is not the action that a rational, intelligent actor would undertake, assuming their goal is to eliminate ecological disaster.
So why is the rest of the world standing around shaking their heads in disappointment? Why would they expect us to lead on anything anymore? Isn't the world a safer place once it realizes that the era of American greatness and leadership (the former is questionable if it existed, the latter certainly did though) and decides to band together and carry on without us? It just baffles me that Europe and China don't work together and realize they can start throwing their weight around.
If Europe, China, and maybe India came together with a climate change pact and threatened the US with either signing up or facing economic retaliation for our irresponsibility, every businessman would-- OVER NIGHT-- force this feckless bitch of a President to sack up and start doing what is right.
I mean I'm thoroughly disappointed in the obvious lack of American leadership in many issues, including climate change. But from what I can see, it's not like there's a lot of other people/nations doing so either, and that just baffles me. The time is now to take your place in world history and these nations are just sitting idly by and playing the victim. I don't get it.

Vast amounts of data has and will be lost, there is simply too much to be backed up despite the best efforts of these people.Basically US scientists have been trying to smuggle out and back things up like crazy, as they were already afraid of this (While the Republican Pest Infestation said they shouldn't worry). Seems like they should have worried and they were right to worry, so with their friends all over the world, the data is now safe. Right out of the hands of the Republican pests and their Orange OompaLoompa saviour.
Its one thing for this regime to deny and defund the programs but to simply destroy it is beyond belief.

It matters because Americans consume a vastly disproportionate amount of energy per person compared to anywhere else in the world, and that energy not being sustainable is a huge issue.
And the world will pass you by but only in the short term. China in India have commited to not build hundreds of coal fired power stations and put huge investment into alternative energy instead. With those huge populations taking the reigns (I should add in no small part due to pressure from their citizens) you will see it become far cheaper to produce clean sources of energy than keep using coal or oil, it may take a couple of decades for the prices to get that low but it will get there.
So America will come round as a) the export of unsustainable fuels will be severly impacted and b) Americans being unwilling to pay more money for energy that has been superseded by renewables.

The United States is the political, diplomatic and military lynchpin of the current global status quo. Declaring global economic warfare on America would cause a total disaster. Cutting ties to America would wreck NATO and the other collective security arrangements America is involved in. The UN is in America. American investments are a huge part of the global economy. It's a complete fantasy.

Oh come right off it. There's nothing strawman about the multiple of people who think Hillary is just as corrupt as Trump. And if you've been paying attention for years but decided to not lift a finger to do one of the only acts an American can do to change the state of their country then the question becomes what have you been paying attention too. No doubt you're bound to say something along the lines of "Nothing ever changes no matter how I vote" which is patently false. People who were treated as societal pariahs but wanted to express their love & get married in the face of a cold society now have that opportunity because of votes. And now decades of research is being culled because of votes. It's not a useless practice and being cynical about it solves nothing. As much as the environment needs donations, volunteers, hard, trustworthy science; it also needs votes so the right people with the right interests help it thrive as well.

Pure evil. There's no other way to look at it anymore. These people are either too dangerous to care about the damage they're doing, or too stupid to see it. Either way, people like that shouldn't be allowed anywhere near important decision-making, let alone be leading the arguably most powerful nation on Earth.

I mean, sooner or later they are gonna run out of digital data to "burn". Gonna have to replace that with something.
I wouldn't condone this, but I know from my time in science I saw large rooms stacked floor to ceiling with tape drives of data from space probes that no one had ever looked at. Youd think some poor grad student would have the job of moving them all to some newer better storage system... But.... Nope. I can't imagine what pre ww2 data is stored like.

As I see it this is what will happen. Climate change will occur. The rest of the world will be prepared for this change and adapt to limit the damage. The USA will be caught out and their economy almost destroyed due to the inability to adapt.
At this point it's what NEEDS to happen. A lot of good people will suffer, but without some sort of near catastrophic event the US will not change.
And then good times come rolling around, hope for improvement. After that, it starts all over. Too many underlying problems to fix in that embarrassment of a country.

Of course, ISIS isn't supporting climate policies that threaten the long term sustainability of life on the planet. Ocean acidification is a nightmare.
I'm not saying to cut ties or actually declare war. Well, I mean, I did... but it's not necessary. I'm just saying-- the world combined has FAR more power on matters such as this when it unites than the United States does independently. I don't understand why the world continues to kowtow to cowards and morons when they absolutely do not need to.
It's like a kid who gets bullied when they're young. When they grow up, they may be 6 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than the bully, but they're still scared of them because it's psychological. That streak needs to end. I just feel like the world continues to look to the US for leadership and it's absolutely not necessary. Not anymore than it looks to any other country for leadership.
It kills me to say this because I really do love what this country could be. But it is very clearly not that and won't be that ideal for quite some time. But the world cannot stop and wait for the US to get it's crap together.
