Trump budget to cut rail services to hundreds of rural communities

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I love this milquetoast concern trolling that espouses the need for inactive empathy. You have to feel sorry for these schmucks because if you don't feel sorry for them, they'll vote for Trump again even if voting for Trump and the GOP means they get hurt worse. They'll keep punching themselves because liberals on the off-topic side of a gaming forum doesn't have empathy for them.
It is getting tired, yeah. In the GITS threads you had people trotting out the same thing, like being mean to Trumpets on the internet is what's really creating the divide in this country.

There are things he's voting in that also don't make any sense from a financial standpoint. What benefit do we get from being able to hunt hibernating bears, or bringing back lead bullets? I heard something about asbestos coming back as well. Like seriously wtf.

Trump is just signing anything put in front of him because he doesn't know any better (I doubt that he even reads any of them) and he can't afford to lose support of Republicans in congress. He's basically the GOPs wet dream since he's signing off on stuff that no moderate Republican president in their right mind would ever sign due to the fallout later and he's so unpopular that he's ultimately take 100% of the blame from the consequences.

Right Wing Media has been telling them for the last 8+ years that they're the true victims of oppression at the hands of minorities/liberals so it's not really surprising.

Interesting Catch 22.

Rural areas seem to be mainly Republican yet really what they need is more state/socialist government to ensure they get subsidies and infrastructure that their economic position alone doesn't justify and likely won't for the foreseeable future given economic trends.

You have to wonder will they stick to their current beliefs and go down painfully as they're increasingly abandoned over time or wise up and realiaze how the worlds moved on and the kind of policies and government they'll need to remain viable?

I'm guessing the former but I hope for the latter.

You make an interesting point. I'm like..99% sure that a standard-cost benefit analysis would say that the economic cost of redistributing federal/state funds to these rural communities to have access to this type of infrastructure is a money loss. In that case, the powers that currently be should tell them to boostrap it and move somewhere else right? (I'm not directing that question at you, just making it rhetorically)

I mean I'm not going to cry about it but I already vote in such a way that benefits these people. That's what a vote for Clinton was. But for one reason or another they bought the con. So at some point they need to be inquisitive adults and take charge of their voting habits. I'm not going to baby them through it.

Don't bother. Even despite the laughable campaign the Dems have been running for the past few decades they will keep screaming "racism!" while covering their ears.
It feel like hearing someone say "I don't really know which product I should choose even with all the information available, let's just see which one of them get the best advertising campaign".

Except it's not a product but an election which can help and/or destroy lives.

For the sake of everyboy I sure hope they will run a better campaign next time, but not because they should have to, but because it seems necessary to convince people dumb enough to make such an obvious dumb choice.

I'm French, I don't need to know anything about Le Pen campaign to know I shouldn't vote for her, and the only thing I need to know about whoever could end up against her ( if she end up in the election second round ) is "Is that person racist too ?".

On one hand, they made this bed so now they need to lie in it. Choices have consequences, and maybe, just maybe, something like this will smack some sense into them.

On the other, I tend to see the whole right wing media/mindset as something tinged with cultish/brainwashing elements. I've seen logical intelligent people, raised by democrat parents in Bronx, NY, fall into that quagmire and warp the values they were raised on until the parents are seen as the crazy ones, and watched how it can slowly warp one's mindset from a young age. My 15-year old brother is already talking about how Trump is a great president and Obama was a tyrant. I'd probably be there too if not for college and GAF

I think you're 100% aware that the intent behind it is actually far from milquetoast and in fact pointed deliberate and cynically dishonest. At least the ones with multi-syllabic screeds.

These sound like they're meant to facilitate very, very specific business interests.

People really love seeing people suffer just because they voted differently. I didn't vote for trump but I'm sure as hell not laughing at those who voted for him and will face negative consequences because of it

Empathy just doesn't exist anymore
As a minority gay person, I doubt they give me much empathy themselves.

I am very concerned with seeing how these rural parts of America change over the next four to eight years. Like, really though. Economic security is never going to come to them with Trump in charge. Hell, even with Clinton that would've been a high promise given they have very little of value to trade on a global market, and anything they could be employed to do can soon be done by a robot. Yet they went with, what they saw as, the answer to their prayers.

These places will either die out, or become more desperate. A more desperate, angry and deprived society is only ripe for all the more venomous grooming - if not by Trump, than anyone who follows after him who may be just as bad, if not worse.

Fake news trying to harm President Trump! This gives people more choices on how to go between towns! Instead of just relying on a train, now they have the choice of multiple ways of moving between cities: Tractors, four-wheelers, pick-up trucks, by foot! Choices!

It is a money loss. Red states are generally net takers w/ federal taxes, blue states net givers. The exceptions are places like the DC/MD/VA area, with the massive federal infrastructure present.

I really want to see how mid west/america will turn out during this administration. Jobs ain't coming back to alot of these areas regardless but the process will move even faster. Like other then the big areas like chicago your going to get to the point of basically being on your own island economically and possibly politically/socially at this rate.

Sure, cut these towns off even more, so they will die quicker. Terrible idea and sucks for the people living there. Unless they really voted 100% Trump, there will always be people hurt by this who will not have voted for him.

That's what they get. They wanted change, now they're getting it.

I just like my trolling to be more in your face as opposed to this "hey guys, can't we just like feel sorry for them?"

Perhaps we could arrange for a deal...

Liberals will be respectful towards Trump supporters if they, and Trump himself, in turn promise to be respectful towards ethnic and gender minorities.

I mean, that sounds like a fair expectation, right?

These people voted to fuck everyone else over to save themselves, even though it was so pathetically obvious to anyone with a shred of critical-thinking skills that it was a trap. It's like rooting for that one rat in a horror-thriller who tries to sacrifice everyone else in return for his own survival, only to get chainsawed in half by the serial killer for his trouble.

That's how things like the Taleban come into existence. Wide swaths of rural population with no economic hope, minimal education, deep religious beliefs, festering angst, and access to weaponry. I mean, it's not anywhere near that point, but give it another decade on this same trajectory...

It's ok you know, it's Obama's fault anyway. He left Trump with such a screwed up transportation budget, what a mess. Sad.

The actual sad thing is he will probably be successful at scapegoating his mistakes on the previous administration all the way up to the next election, and the people who need help the most will continue to buy into it.

Well shit, my city was planning a high-speed rail to the more metropolitan places, but I suppose that's met its penny-on-the-track now? Sucks, I woulda rode it :\

I'm not going to empathize with anyone that voted for that racist fuck, let them burn.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but what stops a tycoon from investing now that government has moved away?
Less infrastructure = even less likelihood to invest (and this will affect cities too) because less people can access the workplace.

Good. We have to cut them off because we don't want those deplorables and riff raffs coming to our communities.

Fuck that.

Where was empathy from these fucks who voted Trump when it comes to my rights as an Hispanic gay American?
This. Empathy always needs to flow from liberals to the conservatives. Never the other way around.

DJ stays winning

This is the first I've I've seen this .gif properly cut, and not that stupid, "Lations, you played yo-" clip that everyone uses. This looks much better.

This is ridiculous. I guess those new jobs will all be local in relation to those working them, or Trump is even dumber than we know and thinks everyone had a car.

The effect of this is going to make these rural communities even less dense. And thus take up more land. And so affect climate change even more.

I'd be interesting to see a ridership to subsidies breakdown on roads vs. rails vs. aircraft. Rail has a lot of merit because it's hella reliable and super useful in rural communities without a long distance bus network. And it reduces sprawl too. But fuck intrinsic value, right?

Good thing NJ Transit isn't run by the federal government.

It will make the electoral college favor the rural areas more as each EC vote will need less popular votes. This is a calculated decision.

huh? there will be less people there

People, having present bias, will spend less money upfront to buy a car to commute rather than more money upfront to move and buy a new house/rent a home closer. People commute ridiculous distances in cars.

It changes the mode of transportation, not the location of home.
