Ya but if I got banned unjustly why would anyone care? Would you care? You don’t know me. You might say it’s bullshit and move on. Especially if you believe me being on GAF is unimportant
There are two levels of caring in my book, and people often conflate them together creating your argument:
1. Direct caring
If my girlfriend gets sick, if my son breaks his leg, if I get fired. I'm emotionally and substantially bothered by these things and they directly impact me. This isn't what's being said here.
2. Empathic or worldview caring
Being able to recognize a morally or socially corrupt standard or event as bad, wrong, or problematic. I didn't know anyone at Sandy Hook, I didn't pay hospital bills, or seek therapy, or throw up or cry, but I could recognize that, principally, it's a tragedy, and it affects people other than myself. This is why we evolved mammal brains. Our inner reptiles are self serving, conceited survivalists, but we've developed the condition of perspective, empathy, and social integration.
Yeah, something doesn't affect you immediately and directly, and that's well and good until it does. Allowing immoral shit to continue with no pushback just sets somebody else up to get fucked, and they'll probably wish other people cared about the issue, too, when they're being affected by it.
Quick edit: And I'm not saying we should all be philanthropists over every injustice in the world, either. I mean, in your example, I'm sure you're an alright guy, but if you got banned from GAF, I probably wouldn't give or pretend to give half of a fuck. We all have to choose which arenas and causes are worth fighting for, and trust that others will cover our blindspots.
