In retrospect, I can't think of a better game for this sort of experiment. Even other turn-based RPGs couldn't replicate this to its full effect unless they were effectively Poke-clones.

That's a great observation. We're talking about a 15-year old game that has been surpassed in every way by its newer iterations, and yet they would not have been as fun to play.

Its been confirmed that that's not the rom OP is using.

Yeah, just digging into this, it's obviously not the same (no bulbasaur in viridian forest for example).

Maybe this entire hack was the streamer's creation? Again, not finding any other hack that matches the name/description of this one used.

Silver/Gold would have probably been more interesting to play.

Nah. I would have personally preferred he set it up with fire-red / leaf-green, or GSC / HGSS. At least typing mechanics in those games worked and there would be no ghost cheesing like there is now. Bonus for GSC / HGSS we can explore both johto and kanto.

It's not gonna be completed without democracy, or it's very unlikely. Odds are the stream will plummet in popularity, and therefore players, until it's a few hundred or thousand people left. And they will have much greater control over Red.
Yeah, I can see this happening too

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say that. The newer games might've been less optimal choices for other reasons, but I don't think the "attachment" factor has even been watered down in the later generations. As a matter of fact, it might be the opposite with stuff like Pokemon Amie, Natures, and special traits being introduced in the later generations (The latter two of which have been especially employed in many Nuzlocke fan comics/fictions)

When the ROM reset it did say "151 Red Version".

Yes, but going through the normal places to search for hacks (romhacking.net, Zophar's domain, etc) I'm not finding anything called Pokemon Red 151 or any version of it. The version posted earlier in this thread is definitely NOT it (even though it's red version and called 151). We'd have already run into many of the blue version pokemon by now if we had (viridian forest is a gold mine of them, as is Mt. Moon, both places we were in for a couple hours).

I'm not finding the version used on the stream anywhere. Not saying it's not available, only this specific version is either home made, or not very popular.

From interview with creator four days ago

Why Pokemon Red?

It’s actually a romhack of Pokemon Red that allows all original 151 Pokemon to be caught legitimately (or at least as legit as a romhack can be). I wanted completing the Pokedex to be a possible goal but with so many people I doubt this will be possible. Still, it results in more varied random encounters so it at least improves the entertainment value a little.

I chose the first generation of Pokemon because I thought it would be more appealing since it isn’t played as often, it also has a lot of nostalgia associated with it for a lot of people seeing as it was the most popular Pokemon generation and even had an anime based on it, I also have a fondness for the grayscale visuals of the original Game Boy. It’s interesting to see how the designs of Pokemon have changed over the years, some of these early designs look surprisingly different.

As for why it is Pokemon as opposed to any other game I thought Pokemon was the best choice because the game is highly turn-based and very forgiving. For many other games a more sophisticated method of determining input would be needed.

Nah, 'cause less people remember Silver/Gold than Red/Blue. I think Silver/Gold is the better game, but Red/Blue has more connections.

Many of the participants are people who barely remember these games or have never played them. Silver/Gold are almost as beloved as Gen I, and is the superior game in many respects.

It would have blown up just as huge, maybe even more.

Also, Super Saiyan Pidgeot.

Honestly, the difference is probably completely negligible. Why? Because it's the name pokemon that's drawing the attention, not anything else.

Again, it's not just a single save state. The emulator saves to one slot while a script backs up that save.

Kind of hoping when this is all said and done he'll box up the entire collection of save states for people to play around with.
The problem would be finding the right rom hack for that. I don't think it would be right for him to share it, and I have no idea if the saves work with the stock rom.

I've had trouble finding information about this hack... all of the usual hack websites pull up no such patch. I've seen a few places mention it, but never what's actually different/how to acquire them.

Someone earlier in the thread said they found something and that all of the extra pokemon are in the pokemon mansion... but take that with a grain of salt.

I know the context of that post. The person was looking at this random encounter list. He was referring to this entry:

#136 – Flareon ; Evolve Eevee/Pokemon Mansion

Of course, given the other encounters written on that romhack changelog, the entire list is inaccurate.

That being said, one must still wonder, given three eeveelutions and one eevee, how the other two would be made obtainable...

Democracy is revealing the kinds of people who would pay $1 to revive during a hard boss fight instead of manning up and getting better at the game.

Anarchy REIGNS! All hail the Helix!
But... if I pay I can have the game beaten for me before I even begin it! What's not to love about that? :P

Also something really needs to shop gastly or haunter's face onto the" You're here forever" picture.

So they're still in the tower huh> That's about halfway through the game right? It's been over 15 years...

I don't think I can watch this for anymore than five minutes. Way to infuriating to watch.

No! There's no running from a trainer battle!

This made me chuckle way more than it should have
