Twitch Plays Pokemon Thread 3: Return of Red... Aussies win again!

Saw this phenomenon bleed into the Twitter app I use, pretty cool how far it has gone.

I enjoy the stream when there's a good mix of progress and craziness attached but not so slow that they are stuck in the same place for days.

I only check this thread now once a couple of days

They had no shot at capturing that thing.

Edit : Who do they trade the red scale to for XP all thing?

Mr. Pokemon, who was with Prof Oak at the beginning of the game. Also, its only an Exp Share, so only the Pokemon who carries it gets extra Exp. Better than nothing I suppose.

there's always a place for miracles in TPP. Anybody thought we had a chance of catching zapdos with the master ball?

Master Ball was one thing. The thing that worried people was that we weren't going to make it to Zapdos without tossing it, but luckily it was so far down the item list we had a hard time using it even in the battle with Zapdos.

For me the whole thing has not lost it's appeal or anything. Quite enjoyable still. Kill the gator movement and resulting civil war, the elite floor and the recent mushroom and slowpoke tail shopping spree when trying to buy poke balls are some high points of last days. I also love the whole phone call system.

Too bad we just failed to capture the Red Gyarados. At least we now have more than one Pokemon with a decent level thanks to the daycare.

There still is some amount of great fan art coming, it is just not posted in this thread.

If you've played any pokemon game before x/y, you would know that exp all wasn't a thing. It was only exp share.

YOU HAVE FAILED THE TEST

I admittedly have not played Gen IV or V. So yes, I think Gen VI has tainted my memories.

Also, Red and Blue was all Pokemon, but it was spread between the party? Not as much XP as X/Y? I think?

If we end up stuck at a part of the game for a whole week with no progress, so be it. When the numbers go down and a dedicated group works through it, it becomes a much bigger moment of triumph that would have drawn people back in, letting the cycle continue.

Would the numbers ever actually go down to that point? I'm referring to button spamming bots, here.

If you have to ban certain people or bots from the stream just to accomplish certain goals, doesn't that make the run just as impure?

Democracy is just a much more efficient way of temporarily negating the effect of bots and trolls without having to go to the effort of banning each and every one of them.

The stream popularity took a serious hit
it's super effective!
I guess the "fad"
I hate that word
is over but I still watch it :)

If I wanted to watch an over leveled pokemon role through everything and then use democracy to proceed through things very very slowly, I'd just play the game myself.

"you're still watching Pokemon?"

heard that yesterday from a guy I work with when I said if he checked out any of the new stream

its like I'm back in middle school haha

i feel the same way. i looked and it was down to like 15k or 16k viewers in the morning when i woke up. Can only hope for weekeneders to play to jump the game

That's basically what killed the run for me. I may watch again when they reach Kanto and definitely if they face Red at Mt. Silver.

Pidgeot was hilarious and endearing because despite being overleveled it had such a shit moveset for most of the game:
Gust/Mirror Move
Sand Attack
Quick Attack
Whirlwind

This was why I was hoping Chikorita was the starter (because it's a qt, but otherwise crappy in Gen 2) or have Togepi with Metronome be the main.

I admit that I personally haven't been paying as much attention to Crystal than I had for Red but I'm still glad the streamer decided to do it, if only for the Gen 2 fans. It's unrealistic to think that it would be able to sustain the numbers the Red stream did. I am curious what will happen once we eventually make it to Mt. Silver and word gets around. Maybe we'll get the spike in viewership to previous levels, maybe not.

Disappointed to hear we lost Togepi and Wooper. Enjoyed the few Metronome shenanigans we had and Wooper is one of my favorite Pokemon.

I'm becoming more and more convinced that Feraligatr needs to be boxed. It just takes the fun out of the entire run when we as a whole don't suck at playing the game.

It's dead, isn't it?

Feraligatr needs to be boxed or deleted.

What made the first run so good was the close calls, the under leveled disadvantage. The chaotic manner that we would still lose to a standard NPC. I've been checking in on this current run once every 2/3 days and the hype has significantly dropped. Better have enjoyed the first run while it lasts, most people don't want to watch your starter 1 shot everything.

The team isn't half bad right now. Why is the Pidgey still a Pidgey though?

Actually, it evolved into a Pidgeotto at level 34 a couple of hours ago. One more levels til Pidgeot, which is when everyone will truly start fawning how it is second coming of Bird Jesus, though it still doesn't have any achievement of its own... He will always be Brian to me.

I dunno if this is where to ask but I just played Pokemon after 11 years does anyone have an extra fire and grass starter for me???? I'd appreciate it

If you're playing X/Y, post in the OT in the Community section. Otherwise, try the general Pokémon Community Thread.

The Brian mechanic is one of my favorites this stream. Even if he becomes the new leader of the team, he's still mistaken for the Messiah, which he is not. Just a Pidgey named Brian.

This should have been an annual thing. Immediately starting a new run brings it to the same place as the knock off. Red is still too fresh.

I'm days late in saying this, I know. I hope this channel takes a break for a while, or at least focuses on less intensive games to better relax the base for another future event.

Maybe not quite yearly, but I agree it needed a little more time in the oven before we started Crystal. Starting again so soon has burned so many people out.

I agree but after this popped up, how many other _____ plays pokemon streams popped up? If he stops then the population might just move to someone else stream. I mean dude had to try to rope in the subscribers while he still had people willing.

I feel the jump from Red to Crystal was too big.

We should have done Yellow first.

Eh, it's even closer to Red than Crystal is. That's like doing the exact same game twice in a row, I think more people would be burned out from that than a new gen. Yellow may have been more fun than Red though, because of all the concessions to the TV show, especially with it starting on Netflix right around the same time.

What can the streamer do to fix this?

I feel like maybe take a week off after Crystal, start with Ruby, and make it anarchy only. A change-up with the format plus how different 3rd gen is might make things more interesting.

We know the game can be beat in anarchy+democracy so using the same format again loses some intrigue.

It just needs more time. We were playing Red for over two weeks. It was everywhere! If you spent any time online during those two weeks, you saw it. You couldn't get away.

It's lost its novelty. It needs time to rest.

I can imagine a biannual stream being very successful, with countdowns and community involvement leading up to each one. But constant streams? Seems like yielding to the copycats.

How are Pikachu's stats in that game? Would he be a Feraligator without the risk of depositing or releasing him?

He would suck against Brock so early on you'd almost be forced to get a second Pokemon that's decent. It's easy enough to get a Mankey to sweep Brock. Then you have all the Geodudes in Mt. Moon, again, no good for Pikachu. Then Misty, who Pikachu would blow over, then Lt. Surge, who again would be pretty tough for Pikachu. I think it would be great for balance.

What can the streamer do to fix this?

Nothing, at this point in time:

1 - The public is fed up.
2 - The lore isn't there.
3 - The novelty has wore off.
4 - The nostalgia isn't as big.
5 - The stream is too time consuming (for people who have to work/study).
6 - The new system (timed democracy) doesn't involve and divide people as much as before.
7 - People that watched the first run have started actually playing Pokémon.

Ruby now would do even worse numbers.

This needs a long break, the streamer has to gather some cool ideas and try a new approach. The simple "try and finish the game" won't fly anymore, we saw it is possible. Change games, change system, change. That's the point, he just made the Crystal run as similar as possible to the previous, but TPP needed changes to remain topical: the whole democracy and anarchy system was great in that regard, it created lore, new strategies and new "gameplay".

There should have been a bigger break from the first run to now.

I'm browsing eBay though for a Pokemon Blue cart since I can't seem to find my original :( Stupid Nintendo.

Haha I dug up my Red copy about a week ago and played through it. So much fun. I'd play on Silver, too, but the battery's dead, although I have been considering going for a speedrun without saves. Wish I still had a wall plug for the Gameboy.

Brian evolved to a Pidgeot! In anarchy, too. Guess it was because Feraligatr was fighting and no one knew he was close to evolving.
