Twitch you have a problem and should be ashamed of it

I'd be pretty satisfied if someone was giving me money to troll me. Most people getting trolled don't make money off of it!

Buying a "hat in TF2" or a weapon skin in CSGO are cosmetic purchases that are done so in an entirely legitimate manner.
Profiting off feigned emotional damage is an insult to people who are actual victims of it.

I sincerely hope those of you trying to equate these two completely separate examples are just trying to be ironic. Because that comparison is basically the definition of a false equivalency.

That changes nothing.

Except for the part where she's not being psychologically abused, and willfully interacts with the goofballs in her chat to put on a show.

By that token, does a comedian who interacts with abusive hecklers promote or profit from psychological abuse?

Helena is very obviously a character or persona. She's not being traumatized in any fashion.

Does twitch really want to go down in history as the website where girls cry and get bulled to make money while playing a video game in the corner of the screen? because it's slowly becoming closer to that tier every week.

What angers me is how twitch allows this stuff to fly yet someone filling the screen with anime artwork for 10 minutes can get a global ban.

Twitch hosts such a vast wealth of content in a massive variety of styles and formats. The idea that this one style would become synonymous with the entire site is ridiculous. Is YouTube known as the website where a shrill Swedish man-boy screeches over videos of himself playing scary videogames?

People sure do get serious about Twitch's "purpose" or "integrity" when a woman starts using it to make money in a way they don't approve of.

The entire computer reads the donation thing on Twitch should be banned. It has ruined a few streamers I used to enjoy.

Bravo to this girl, seriously.

She knew that streaming on twitch would bring a bunch of woman hating trolls and pervs, and found a way to beat them at their own game and monetize it.

Genius.

Still i wouldn't give her a minute of my time

I watched for a bit and enjoyed it. It reminds me of Boogie's angry fat guy or Nathan Barnatt's Keith Apicary. If she wants to play a character for laughs more power to her.

Of course she'll never be Keith tier

There are so many excellent Twitch channels, you are bound to find a stream that appeals to you. I wouldn't want there to be more rules or restrictions on streaming.

Girl gets money for acting hurt.
Trolls get satisfaction for trolling.
Viewers get enjoyment from watching (I assume they're not there to actually watch game content).

I can see no negatives aside from maybe other people's streams being pushed down the list because these are more popular. They have a weirdly beautiful thing going on.

I wanna bang u like a machine gun @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Just followed the channel, it is hilarious LOL.

The comedian plays it straight and might even put the abuser in their place. Apples and oranges.
Okay, since that stream didn't do this I guess everything is fine?
Alright, let's do this.

1) Assuming she's faking it, what does that change? The shitty behaviour she's fishing for is still shitty. People are encouraged through gamification to hone their (a)social "skills". And if the donators were in on the "joke", so what? Ironic shitty behaviour is still shitty. Who's to say their next target will be in on it? Who's to safely say even their current one is?

So the best-case scenario is of a LOL-IRONY circle fuck of shitty behaviour on all accounts, frigging 4chan. If even one participant is serious, the whole thing becomes sinister quickly; cue the white knights.

And we can safely assume that at least some of the trolls mean it to be mean. Why encourage and train them?

Even the orchestrator might take some minus karma away from this and develop manipulative tendencies or misanthropy.

2) Assuming she's not faking it, well, fuck.
She is though.

I don't remember who, but one of the comedians in Heckler (2007 documentary) talks about how you can win the audience's favor, but you can't really defeat a heckler in their own mind. They are generally so sloppy drunk and full of liquid confidence that it doesn't even register that they've been humiliated with a witty barb, because their idea of a witty barb is "You suck!" Most of them are just too far gone to feel shame or defeat. I'd probably say the same of chat trolls. Your main concern is that Helena seems to leave trolls feeling like they have "won", but they will probably feel that no matter what the response.

Moreover though, the same question applies YouTubers that engage trolls in their videos or the comments section. Or pro wrestling heels that play up to the audience's hatred. Are they benefiting from psychological abuse? How is it psychological abuse if the person being attacked is utterly unaffected and is putting on an act that is deliberately designed to provoke an angry response?

Here's the thing though -- if Helena quit or got banned from Twitch tomorrow, how many of those trolls would disappear and stop spamming chats? If your answer is greater than 0%, you are an incredible optimist. Most of these wads would just move on to another target.....perhaps one that's actually sincere, and quite sensitive to critiques.

You don't have to "assume" that Helena is faking.....anybody with a sense of humor can spend 20 minutes watching her and know it's an act. So knowing that she's a performer and is built to take the hits.....isn't it almost better that she acts as a lightning rod to absorb the attacks of the most virulent and hateful trolls? I wouldn't argue that she's having any huge effect on the overall Twitch community, but yeah if she weren't streaming then some of those chat assholes would probably just be in another channel shitting things up.

Twitch chat is a cesspool. YouTube comments are a cesspool. Twitter is a cesspool. None of these places are going to be cleaned up unless company management makes a strident and concerted effort to do so. Until that day comes, I am more than happy to support creators who can harness the douche squad for entertainment and profit.

I just gave another donation of £60 but I didn't appear on screen. Does it only happen occasionally or does she pick which donations to feature?

I didn't argue if it is psychological abuse or not, I said it is promoting the behaviour. And more as your other examples it is encouraging hate.

Oh yeah, I forgot, it's the internet, dwi and so on. I didn't say anything of converting trolls, I said don't give them playgrounds.

Because Helena, even if asking for it, isn't "built to take the hits". She is an unprofessional adolescent who does it for the money, not some magical lightning rod to treat the symptoms of troll culture. She will be affected somehow, and I'd wager not in a good way.

Just that anybody who "harnesses the douche squad" will also seek to foster and grow it. That's what they're creators of, assdom.

This is just sad, 3k viewers and 0 mods. Imo a lot of these people tend to have 0 mods and it just seems like they're asking for it. Not just that, but they can also just turn of the Donation to speech thing if it annoys them so much. God I can't wait to see how YT is going to handle shitty streamers like this. And yes I know it's not always just the streamers, but I do believe that in most cases they seem to actively support it by not taking any actions.

Christ, just read her bio:

Yes. I received a 30 day ban in June for threatening to blow up Riot HQ (bad joke) and waving a knife around. It was very inappropriate and I'm sorry.

And she's got a freakin subscriber button. -_-'

Yeah I see Summit1G do this alot with the whole "you got a big head" donations lol

Doesn't really bother me as a viewer though, it's funny how streamers have been making money through this more than anything.

Surely there is some form of irony in that people who hate that these people get attention, that instead of ignoring them, we've compiled a thread where you can watch every single one of them and thus, give them more viewers.

Also, that Miramisu is clearly a FAKE(!). She has stupid hair.

This is seriously the best stream I've ever seen in my life. It's so meta that I don't even know if I can wrap my brain around it.

Is it ridiculous? yes, but I don't see why Twitch should do anything about it. Ridiculous things are all over Twitch really and Streamer love making money out of stuff like this.
