A dad in the US who boasted about his parenting skills after telling his hungry nine-year-old daughter to open a tin of beans or go without food has caused outcry on social media.

After six hours the child successfully opened the tin and was finally allowed to eat, he said in now-deleted tweets. The dad, a podcaster, claimed it was a victory for "good parenting".

But other parents accused him of neglect, while some suggested he invented the story to get attention.

John Roderick, who is also a musician, shared the story on Saturday on Twitter, explaining that it began when his daughter asked him to make baked beans. After she brought him a tin-opener and can of beans, he asked her how she thought a tin-opener worked, he said.

When she said she didn't know, he said he realised "a teaching moment just dropped into my lap".

Eventually she opened the tin and ate the beans, he explained.

I'm all for letting kids learn how to do things themselves, and not solving every problem for them so they never know how to do things alone, but this is just laziness.

Take 10 seconds to explain to her how it works, start opening the can to demonstrate, then let her finish it off. Then next time she wants beans, talk her through it and only help if she genuinely seems to have forgotten what to do.

My eldest daughter is a little over 2 years old. When she learned to walk, I helped guide her. Nothing wrong with helping your kids.

Both sides are pretty stupid in this case.

On the one hand, the Twatter warriors are out in force outraged at the guy for being a bad parent. And I suspect none of them know shit about raising a child.

But I think the dad is an idiot too. He shouldn't have posted his sorry parenting skills on Twatter and boasted about it. Also, letting a 9 year old open a can? She could hurt herself dumbass!

Twitter was a mistake.

I've been seeing some big accounts abandon Twitter recently due to the problems on the platform that Jack doesn't want to fix.

Say what you will about Facebook, but they actually made Instagram bearable to use because not every Fuckwit with an opinion can voice that opinion on a post of the post author doesn't want that.

She eventually figured it out. This is good as the zombie apocalypse is right around the corner. Her resourcefulness went up quite a bit. Rather than being shown what to do, she still figured it out. This is gonna come in real handy soon.

The real problem here is that the beans in US still come in cans that need an opener. In superior europe they come in cans that can be opened without any tool.

if anything he is teaching his daughter a valuable lesson. food does not just magically appear like Manna from the heavens. he is teaching her self reliance. but Twitter hates fathers, for they are the dreaded cishetero men. in truth, feminists should be celebrating this, as the daughter proved on her own that she is not dependent on her father. the fruit of the lesson being her independence from her father.

just as well, from the perspective of someone who knows parents and has dealt with kids, they can be little shits when it comes to eating food. just refusing to eat dinner. is it abuse to refuse a kid any food they want if they refuse to eat supper? imo it is not, at least, if you only send them to bed hungry on a rare occasion, and not make it a nightly thing. when it is a pattern, then it is abuse. parents have to have the latitude to use non violent forms of discipline like this from time to time. kids do not realize they can't, for instance, eat ice cream all day long. it would make them sick. should parents let them make them sick?

ultimately it is a question about autonomy. how much to give the children v parents. the current fashion on Twitter and SJWs is to want to destroy all hierarchies, and Fatherhood, most of all. the child should be free, they would argue, to decide their own sex, or decide they are a mermaid or forest faun, or eat ice cream all day, even if it physically hurts them, even if it stunts their social development, even if stalling their natural mental and physical development and bombarding them with chemicals and extremist radical feminist agitprop is doing real visible harm (Portland? Antifa anymone?) towards their ability to function in the greater normal society. to the SJWs it is not about the wellbeing of the kids, it is about converting them, just like everyone, to the death cult of identity politics.

This, dad is a dick and was rightfully getting shat on. Don’t be a dick to your 9-year-old, try someone in your own league.

Twitter is probably the worst social media platform, it’s like all of the snowflakes left every other platform and went on Twitter.

The problem with Twitter is it gives every loser a platform and soapbox. If people retweet their "call out" of someone else, then that gives them validation and they believe their opinion matters more than anyone else's and it spawns arrogant dicksplashes who spend their lives sitting on the platform looking for people to destroy with their keyboards. The whole platform needs to either be deleted, or vastly overhauled.

Twitter is like having no front door on your house. You can shout what you want to the world, but there's absolutely nothing stopping a psychopath from barging in with 4,000 of their friends to kick you in the face and tell you that you're wrong and you need to die.

You need to let kids learn things for themselves.

but

6 hours is a bit much, both for him to allow his hungry child to struggle at opening a can of beans and for his clearly retarded child to fail at opening a can of beans.

Also don't brag about it on Twitter you dumbass.

9yrs old and can't open a tin?

Theres kids her age in China that can make shoes.

West is doomed

Can't open a can of beans with a shoe though.
