Two SF gamers wait 40 hours for PSP

As of 3pm Wednesday, over 100 people had gathered outside the Sony Metreon in anticipation of the portable's launch--but some had been there all night.

Suffice it to say, Richard Roth and Jossle Sison really want a PSP. Determined to be first in line when the portable goes on sale at midnight tonight, the two gamers (pictured) arrived at the Sony Metreon on Tuesday… morning. "We've been here 30 hours and 28 minutes," Roth said at 2:28pm, meaning they had arrived around 8am the previous day--and will have been there nearly 40 hours when the portable goes on sale. The pair brought outdoor clothing, sleeping bags, chairs, and even a tent in preparation to spend the night outside--in the rain.

But while officials at the San Francisco entertainment complex appreciated the pair's enthusiasm, they couldn't let them stay on Metreon property because they were technically loitering. "We waited across the street all night," said Sison, who said they had taken the week off work. "We told our boss we were going camping, which we sort of are." The pair certainly didn't get many creature comforts as they spent Tuesday outside in the cold rain. "Yeah, it sucked," Roth remarked, smiling. "Every time we wanted to go to the bathroom, we had to go into Denny's and buy something."

Luckily, the pair soon had company. Around 12pm, two other eager gamers joined them in their PSP vigil. The four "took turns keeping watch," while the others slept as best they could. Throughout the night, a dozen more would-be-PSP buyers had shown up. By Wednesday afternoon, over 100 people had lined up along the Fourth Street side of the Metreon, across from a giant mockup of the handheld with a countdown clock stuck in the middle.

The crowd was kept warm and well-fed by a group of Sony workers in silver jackets, who handed out PSP beanies and refreshments to the crowd. Occasionally, a waiter with a cart would trundle along the sidewalk, handing out sandwiches to the throng, many of whom were surfing the Web via Wi-Fi-enabled laptops. As the witching hour approaches, Sony will throw a launch event for those present, an event which GameSpot Live will cover live in a special edition of On the Spot at 11:30pm PST.

But while Roth and Sison were cordial now, one issue hung over the pair's head like the sword of Damocles--who will get the first PSP? "There's no argument--it's mine! Hell, he wouldn't even know about this thing if it wasn't for me," Roth said pointing to a laughing Sison. Unfortunately, the PSP is about all he will be able to afford. "I already got Wipeout [Pure] and Twisted Metal[: Head On] , and I'm going to get Ridge Racer tonight," he said, "But that's all I can afford, man. That thing's expensive!"

For all the latest information on the PSP's US launch, check out GameSpot's appropriately named PSP Launch Center.

I'd have put both of my PSP boxes into a see-through bag and walked past them every 2 minutes. But that's just me. =)

What a fun situation to be in! Waiting in line for the very thing that would make waiting in lines bearable.

That huge mock PSP is awesome. I hope when the clock strikes 12 that screen comes alive with all sorts of PSP video footage.

Hey it even has dust under it.

Don't understand these people who wait in line for days. I guess if you can get a bunch of friends and all do it at once it can be kind of fun, but even then I'd prefer to just go to the pub.

I hope one of them drops their PSP as they walk out of the door.

I don't know how people can get the money to pay for such things if they have the time to sit around outside for almost two days.

I have the leave available at my job... but I'm not nearly that crazy. ;)

what a bunch of morons waiting outside a sony store, when they could probably walk into Kmart at 10 am tomorrow and pick one up with no problems.

Yeah, I get the feeling they're overdoing it here...

And if they wanted one so bad, I don't see why they don't already have JPN units.

Now I can't say I had the time of my life back when Sea Manky, Trunks, and I (What a cast, eh?) camped in the parking lot of Best Buy for a PS2; but I can say that we had decent paying jobs and still weren't interested in a Japanese unit. Granted the PS2 was region locked, but still - it's the difference of a couple hundred dollars that can be used on local software.

I guess this just clearly illustrates the plateaus of fan dedication.

I guess these people don't know what preorders are.

There's more than enough evidence to demonstrate that hardware pre-orders are pretty fucking useless. Here's a convenient recent incident.

Hardware pre-orders are not a guarantee of getting a system. Game retailers just love the free loan idiot gamers give them.

So, are there folks camping is other cities?

I'm almost tempted to check the Best Buy parking lot, but I don't want to risk a ticket with the sad state of the Banditmobile in the suburbs of Cleveland. :X

Just wait until they find out they can't play their PS2 games and DVD's like the Best Buy clerks told them they could.

Given that my school friends (At DigiPen, no less) didn't even know the PRICE of the unit, I'm expecting a LOT of backlash over the price and compatability of the unit, especially since people have been harping so long about the memory stick and "dvd" video playback. I expect full details from ALL retail employees.

Don't know why you're complaining about preorders...

The next few days should be quite interesting, to say the least.

I preordered mine back in December at the EB here (first on their list too). If I don't get mine tomorrow, magazine racks will be falling.

Actually, looks like it has a countdown timer on it. So it probably will.

Yeah, I pre-ordered my PS2 at EB something ridiculous like 18 months before launch.

Where did I get my PS2?

Best Buy. :P

Get back to me when I can just pay a system off in full, have it released during a business day, go to work; then on my way home pick up my PS3 at (Y Game Store) sans hassle. ;)

Just for fun: Count the folks in the picture passing the time with NintenD00DS! :P

There's even a distinct lack of GBA systems. :X

Probably because Sony fans are a bit excited to get their first handheld. Remember, this isn't the pokemon demographic, it's the blind Sony-fanboy that purchases anything with the Sony name.

That's because according to them, Sony invented handheld gaming. :D

I don't play Pokemon (I've owned Pokemon games; but never played them through to conclusion), and even I owned a GB. GBC. GBA. GBAsp. Then GBA Player - yeah, fuck you Nintendo. :P

Still it's odd to see people just lined up. Read a book damn it! Something. Talking to the guy sitting next to you for eight hours gets old after about 15 minutes.

But they can talk about how it'll play DVDs and PS2 games. Jesus, I need to drive out to Best Buy tonight just to find these people and laugh. I really need to hear of just a SINGLE person becoming disenchanted and leaving the line.

Yeah, fuck Nintendo for making you buy their gradual updates to hardware.

Any way to get back home if BART and AC Transit end their services a little after midnight?

Nope, you're fucked... This is a good time to remind you that you can pay a monthly on a CAR, but hey, priorities, priorities.

Rename the thread get your dumbass face on tv cuz that's the closest its ever going to get to a girl. LOL I wonder if some bums joined the line just to keep up solidarity and take advantage of the washrooms I'm assuming they are using.

Actually Nintendo should have setup a mobile soup kitchen so that the stench of bum would chase all the virgins away. Imagine at midnite the President of Sony shaking the hand of the guys in line only to find out they were all bums with not enough nickels for a PSP.

how come there is no hot chick or any kind of chicks there?

um, because they're video game geeks lining up for a video game machine. there's something really tragic about these people :P 40 hours?! surely they have better stuff to be doing.. speaking of which, i'm supposed to be working.. but GAF keeps luring me back :D

Recently conferred with my girlfriend:
PSP waiting in line: Stupid
GameCube: Ok
She doesn't seem interested in the PSP, and this is a girl who goes into EB week after week making sure she's going to get to keep the DMC3 standup display of Dante when they remove it and has a scrapbook made out of game art and her own art for Castlevania, mainly Lament of Innocence.

Maybe the reason that men find the PSP attractive is the same reason a majority of women aren't lesbians.

I never thought about waiting in line for a system. For a game, I was close to doing that with the first MK for SNES, but I ended up getting it from a local mom and pop store 4 days before everyone else.

The Xbox2 whatever launch might be nuts.

Yeah, fuck Nintendo for making you buy their gradual updates to hardware.

Roll your eyes right back into your head plz!

I'm just a disenchanted Gameboy fan.

The original Gameboy, green and nasty as it was; was solid, and most of the gradual updates were slight improvements over the last version. The GBC being the only real lackluster one of the lot, fortunately a little game by the name of Shantae came along and justified it's existence. :D

The GBA is just one atrocity after another.

The GBA screen could not be seen in normal lighting conditions.

The GBAsp screen still had visibility issues in certain situations, for example in the car in broad daylight. It wouldn't be dark enough for the lame duck front light to be effective, and the positioning of the screen, case shadows, and bad lighting in a car just left you with another junk GBA that required Sun loving.

So I bought a GBA Player hoping that would alleviate all problems. Nah, scrolling problems with that.

For me, this past Gameboy life cycle has been one miserable failure after another. Hopefully the PSP sets a precedent for portable quality that those dullards at Nintendo can't design for fear of losing their grip on the hand held market as well.

Hey I walked by the Metreon last night around 12:15 am. Don't worry, there were plenty of cute girls, one was even using a DS. The lines went down 4th. Everyone in line had free PSP T-shirts.
