I remember Dana responding to criticism about the fighters pay and the comparison to boxing. "In boxing, only the main event guys get big money. The rest of the card don't make shit." meanwhile the number one contender who is in the main event is getting less than $50,000.


How UFC gets away with it I'll never know. The lack of competition hurts

Maybe because the so called numero uno contender didn't accept to renew his contract before the Silva fight, because he's angling for bigger leverage. And maybe it's because the UFC lets fans choose who deserves a title belt. If this was boxing, Weidman wouldn't be fighting Silva.

And how much would Dana being paying Weidman if he did renew his contract? If the GOAT and the biggest attraction in the sport is getting that kind of money are you really going to make Weidman not renegotiating a new contract as an excuse?

Only the hardest of the hardcore ufc fans would argue they're not ridiculously cheap

Boxers make a ton, but the problem with boxing is that the boxers ARE the promoters, essentially, so they cherry pick fights, refuse to defend belts, and make a shit ton of money.

He could be getting paid double that no doubt. Or more. If he builds his name he can do much more, like Uncle Dana says not everybody gets to win a trophy in life playboy.

Silva is 95% of the fight here in terms of name recognition. So yeah he gets paid peanuts because he's worth peanuts right now.

And again this isn't like boxing.

Fighters pay their own camps (obviously, I mean come on). UFC has an insurance that allows for top medical care*, but they I think a certain amount is deducted from the contract upfront. I really don't know how to explain it because I don't know the details.

As you can see from "Like Water" documentary, UFC itself asks for medical care exactly after the fight is over.

I guess that everything else is fighter's expense

Wow, I'm more of a casual MMA fan so I had no idea most fighters were getting paid so little.

I remember Chael Sonnen saying he made 10m fighting Silva and was getting paid 10 million to fight Jon Jones, though I guess he was trolling or something.

It's kind of shocking that someone in a main event / title fight would only be making $24k, after taxes and all the expenses that's not much left over at all.

That's just the disclosed base pay, there are discretionary bonuses given out as well as PPV cuts for the big names.

Totally for a Weidman win.

I mean the guy will be champion whether tonight or later on in his career, I'm just super excited about this fight in general. More often than not the UFC bumbles their way around with prospects.
