UK Boxed Charts: Week 51, 2024 (Dec 15 - Dec 21)

Thick Thighs Save Lives

NeoGAF's Physical Games Advocate Extraordinaire
Well folks, in what is presumably the last Christmas period before Nintendo unleashes its next major hardware, Switch games have performed admirably as folks look to fill those stockings come Wednesday morning.

In fact, let's look at the numbers here: 8 games in the top 10 are either Switch exclusive or can be played on the Switch, and the same can be said of 26 titles from the complete top 40 charts. That's impressive, and it goes to show just how popular boxed Switch games really are at this time of year.
Naturally, digital sales may paint a different picture, but it's at least a good result for Nintendo in terms of the physical retail space. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was the best-selling first-party Nintendo title, followed by Super Mario Party Jamboree, Nintendo Switch Sports, Minecraft (third-party), Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Lots of what we would probably call "evergreen" titles, then.

It'll be interesting to see how things shake out in the new year as we inch toward a new hardware announcement, currently due before the end of March. Will Switch games maintain their current momentum..? Only time will tell.

Here's a look at this week's top 40 in full, with platform breakdowns for all of the titles available on other consoles alongside the Switch:

There are 2 IPs fully own by Sony on this list:

- Atro bot (10)
- GT7 (36)

Sony's strategy about their investments since 2019 (bar Helldivers 2 strocke of luck, they bought the sequel at the right time) has been a disaster. And about Lego Horizon and Spider-man, well Sony don't fully own those, they just rented some juicy IPs to boost their own product. A lego / marvels game selling well for Christmas? Duh.

Is Indiana Jones digital only? Better come on a fucking disc when it launches on PS5.
Edit: Was the disc exclusive to Amazon or something? The standard version seems to be on there but not in stock, everywhere else is a digital code or the more expensive versions.

The chart says Veilguard is 39 now but was 24 last week. That doesn't add up, because it was at 24 over a month ago, Nov 10-16, then dropped out the top 40 completely during the last two weeks of November. I don't see results for the first two weeks of December, though, so maybe it had a resurgence.

It's weird that Indy isn't even in the top 40.

UK’s retail charts have become kinda useless since digital share has become very significant nowadays.

That's such a dumb way to approach the data in this thread. MY GOD.......console wars have reached a new low.

Is it possible Indiana Jones doesn't even sell 1 million copies globally in December?

I would assume it's under 1 million copies sold.

This is only UK physical sales, but it's #96 on the top paid games on the UK store and #54 in the US.

Is that #96 and #54 on Xbox's digital store for the month of December?

I think it's updated multiple times throughout the day.

Oh wow lol! That's quite surprising. Good to know. If you don't mind......where's the newest Dragon Age: Veilguard and Star Wars: Outlaws on those same Xbox lists? I feel like those two games are good comparables for Indy.

So Indy is today, selling worse than both Star Wars Outlaws and Dragon Age: Veilguard overall on the UK and US digital Xbox stores. That's INSANE!!!!! I would have lost that bet 40 times over. Especially since the game came out 2 weeks ago. GamePass is literally killing MS first party video game sales.

There's literally no way they are making this money up in GP subs.

They bought the sequel? They own Helldivers 1, which they completely funded when Arrowhead was like 15 employees over a decade ago. Sony then saw the potential of Arrowhead and invested 10's of millions of dollars in a sequel as Arrowhead built up their studio to over 100 employees. After Arrowhead showed Sony a prototype of HD2, Sony doubled their investment

Sony deserves immense praise for HD2. As much as any other first party game

Matt Piscatella showed it was the second best selling game of the week in US, behind only COD. But losing to a game, even COD, in its 6th week shouldn't be seen as good. I would be shocked if Indy has broken 1 million copies WW. It has a CCU peak of 12k on Steam

Gamepass numbers seem decent, but Indy surely had a budget of 100+ million, and that is not even mentioning licensing fees Microsoft has to pay for. I would be shocked if there is a sequel, as much as I enjoyed the game

Sony has always given their studios and creative leads absolute freedom and support. That is their moto since 1994 with David Jaffe with multiple project, supporting TLG for almost a decade, helping Kojima after Konami fiasco, supporting Shenmu 3 project ...etc

And Now with Helldivers and Resogun devs. They don't get enough credit for how great they are as partners.

Jesus mate the hot takes; the entire point of gamepass titles is to keep people subscribing to and choosing to subscribe to gamepass.

They made $500 million this month with gamepass subs I’m sure they’ll be fine.

It’s been shown before 9/10 sales on Xbox UK are digital.

Digital sales don't appear to be doing well.

And $500 per month from Game Pass? That doesn't account for all the operating costs associated with the service. If everything was fine then there's no logical reason why they would be putting more games on PlayStation.

If MS is pushing Game Pass, then the # of subs matter more to them compared to sales of games. Sales of any title should be a bonus for them at this point. If they can successfully convert their user base (and they mostly have) into paying subscribers, they've accomplished part 1 of their goal. Now, what we are seeing MS do, is try to expand outside of those users and it remains to be seen how much success they find there.

It is an odd time for subs given there are sooo many now.

Yes, better sales for titles published by their studios would be good for them but it's not what they are pushing for. But I don't think, at this point anyway, that any of this should be too alarming for them, if not expected, as long as a lot of that is converting into subs, even if they are month to month and not for a full year.

I wouldn't be surprised if this Indy game cost $200 million after you include gave development, marketing, and licensing cost. That money HAS to be made back. And Gamepass subs just don't cut it. We know that at this point.

MS isn't working under a different economy here within the industry. The days of sales don't matter are over for Xbox. That goes for both hardware and software.
