UK: Charlie Brooker to host "How Video Games Changed The World" 2hr show on Channel 4

Also needs to make more mention of Japan this time. GameSwipe was pretty western orientated which is odd when you consider two of the three console manufacturers are Japanese.

That and the quirkiness of a lot of Japanese games leads to instant humour that even non gaming enthusiasts understand.

GamesWipe was probably like the first thing in a while to acknowledge there are games outside of Call of Duty and Mario. Baby steps.

video games’ first credible female character, digital cover girl and tawdry teenage boy fantasy – Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft

Terra and Cele's are like "The fuck!?"

As wrong as the statement might me, you need to remember FFVI never released is the UK. Besides Lara Croft is probably more well known than every female FF character put together. Heck any female character except possibly Peach

That and the fact that Lara Croft is British so of course she was the big name putting us back on the videogaming map.

Im a big fan of the entire Wipe series so am looking forward to this. I dont he was a fan of The Last of Us though, so I dont think I can take him seriously anymore. Thats as wrong an opinion as a person can have

I think the he did a guardian column about his love for japanese arcades IIRC

He's going to talk about Papers, Please...?

If you excuse the British-ness, that's jolly well good and a bloody brilliant idea, lad.

Hah! I don't have THAT much of an impact on things, sadly. ;)

It will still very much be a TV documentary about videogames, so don't expect anything massively mental - I've just done my best to ensure that it isn't the usual "SPACE INVADERS LOL" tripe that we've seen in the past. My main role was fleshing out the structure and discussion points within the show, and helping to choose the games the show is going to talk about.

And hell, if he happens to use one of my jokes along the way? I'll die a happy man. :)

This was my biggest worry. Thank you good sir. The only bit of your work I've encountered were the abridged videos. I was in tears.

Well, that's great to hear. Gameswipe kinda did the whole "here's what video games are if you somehow tuned in by accident" so I'm glad that it's not going to be a re-do of that.

Nice to hear that Cara Ellison is involved too! Another very funny, very smart writer.

Hopefully some of the other writers involved can help Brooker be funny again. Lord knows he lost that ability a while back.

Will watch, he's lost his edge since being drawn into Huq's world of celebrity, but he's still a funny misery guts.

Look forward to it! I don't care for Ross but Charlie Brooker is always awesome.

Hopefully Graham Linehan is involved too, I preferred him over Dara O'Briain on Gameswipe. His stories were the best.

Would love to watch this show but I just can't stand Charlie Brooker.

I think it's the fact that he's married to Konnie Huq and yet he's still a miserable bemoaning sod. /salt

I love Dara's take on gaming. His commentary on (I think) Screen Wipe about his trials and tribulations against The Berserker in Gears of War was hilarious.

Nice to have a firm date. Really looking forward to this one.

Brooker fans, watch A Touch of Cloth. Found it bloody hilarious.

It's on Saturday 30th at 9PM according to the channel 4 website http://www.channel4.com/programmes/charlie-brooker-videogames-changed-the-world

Edit/ and then they are showing Indie Game: The Movie afterwards, seems to be all of the video games night.
Ahh man I've already seen that, but still sounds like a good night's viewing!

I was very surprised when I found that out!

Have you watched Black Mirror?!
I just Wiki'd that and thanks for bringing it into my existence. I'm a fan of Brooker's TV critiques but I totally missed this!

Yeah, I'm talking more about his confession about toning down his attacks on celeb culture, t'was a sad read.
Link to said confession?

To be fair, it's harder to attack the "celeb culture" when a) you're part of it and thus b) you're going to meet lots of people in the "celeb culture", some of which may express a disagreement with your "attacks" by having a impromptu meeting between their fist and your nads.
