While we're on the subject of chips and foods the Americans seem to lack generally, I always find it weird when their 'pickles' seems to only refer to Gherkins.

How, in the 2 and a half centuries since buggering off, did they lose the other two chip shop staples that stand so proudly besides pickled gherkins; pickled eggs and pickled onions?

It's like sure, they gained independence, but they also seem to have lost so much.

In the same way I don't have guilt for my forefathers actions, I don't really have pride either. It's just difficult for me to feel good about shit a bunch of dead guys did way before my grandparents were even born, just because we occupy the same land mass.
More modern wars, WW2 etc? Sure, I had relatives that fought in that war that I knew. Britain and the US were just so different in those colonial days its difficult to really connect with those cultures without forcing it, for me at least.
Its mostly just good fun I understand.
