Usually these alert levels are in response to incidents. We saw the threat level increase after 9/11, 7/7 and the Manchester arena bombing, to name but a few.

With what's kicked off in France and Vienna this week, combined with the American election and our very own Bonfire Night on the 5th, I would guess that this is just a precaution.

Also bear in mind that patrols, manpower and activities are adjusted according to the alert level
