Not sure how correct this info is, but supposedly the review embargo lifts this Sunday.

Ask me about my Stream Deck
Weebs and non weebs can live in harmony. I must try - If it scores above an 87...

I don't with multiplayer or AAA but this weeb **** is out of my wheelhouse so I will defer to the experts.

One thing I didn't enjoy from the demo was how every battle area felt like an amorphous, non descript puzzle piece. I can travel N, S, E, and W but each direction quickly smacks you with "Defeat this puzzle piece to unlock this character class".

It doesn't give you a strong long term goal to build towards, which may be remedied in the full game or it may be a missed opportunity. The towns / cities don't give you that "I've been on a long journey, now I need to rest, level up, buy equipment, meet new characters, unwrap new story" feeling that many RPGs give you. It's almost like the whole game is just 30 minute strategy puzzles glued to eachother.

You:

a) didn't seem to like the demo
b) don't seem to like the art direction/general themes
c) will base your purchase on random other people's opinions
d) are doing this only to curry favor with someone who isn't interested in reciprocating

???

You might find more success and satisfaction staying in your wheelhouse.

I did like the demo.
b) don't seem to like the art direction/general themes
The art is spotty. The war theme is right up my alley.
c) will base your purchase on random other people's opinions
People who have played the entire game, yes.
d) are doing this only to curry favor with someone who isn't interested in reciprocating
You have to be the change you want to see in the world. I believe in the power of humanity.
You might find more success and satisfaction staying in your wheelhouse.
A ship may be safe in the harbor, but that is not what ships are built for. Leading by showing others how to take risks is a noble cause.

Man... feels like Atlus West is dropping the ball on promoting the western release of Unicorn Overlord compared to what they're currently doing for the domestic release. :lollipop_pensive:
And decided to release the game close to FFVII Rebirth.......for me this is guarantee day one buy but most people wont even know this game is coming out because the hype around Rebirth.

And they doing SAME mistake with releasing SMT5V close to Elden Ring expansion.....I dont know what Atlus is doing.

Yeah, I'm even super hype for this game and know I'll love it, but I'm gonnah hold off cause I can't play two story heavy games like that at once.

Not to mention everybody I mention this game to is like "huh??"
Everything is ff7 right now

That’s been the problem for me too. Granblue had to wait cause persona 3 came out the same time. Unicorn is going to have to wait a little until I finish rebirth. Same for smtv this summer and Elden ring. I hope they don’t pull something similar with metaphor. I want them to release that game without any distractions.

Same here, day one for me too. Not sure what is up with these release dates. I have to imagine that it probably hurts them more than it helps. Still hoping that the excitement for the genre right now will help push up numbers for Unicorn. I want that to be a big hit.

For what it's worth the pre-order numbers for the physical version in Japan are quite good and have been accelerating in the past few days so it might be a surprise hit at least domestically. ^^

I think because word of mouth on the demo has been really good.

Yup, I think so too. Good word of mouth due to the excellent demo.

Just checked COMG, and yeah, it started getting sizable jumps in the number of pre-orders starting with the day the demo dropped.

I've been going back and forth about it, but I think I'm gonna start fresh as opposed to picking up where I left off in the demo.

On a side note, does anyone know when digital releases become available on the Switch? Is it at midnight, or the following morning?

This image is so funny. Kamitani made this because Jason Schreier made an article complaining about the female character design of Dragon's Crown. Kamitani then made this in response of the article
Those people on Kotaku acted so idiotic and unprofessional.

Is there any word about a PC release? I'll probably get this on console anyway, since I loved Ogre Battle, but I'd probably most like to play this on Steam Deck if possible.

Unfortunately Vanillaware hasn’t released any of their games on PC, so chances are low.

Damn, I was hoping maybe the new paradigm of big success when releasing on PC might have persuaded them to change their ways.
Honestly I’m more surprised this game is coming out in Xbox, this type of game has more audience on PC compare to Xbox.

What time is it?

Uh, that's the joke...

Spent 3 hours with the demo before Rebirth dropped, no surprise that I love it. I didn't know going into it that combat was essentially hands-off, I thought it was more like the fantastic Grand Kingdom (anyone else play it?), I'm quite intrigued by this style of tactics, seems simple on the surface but there is a lot of depth underneath the hood, lots to manage with troop formations/combinations, fighting battles on multiple fronts etc.

Gorgeous Vanillaware art is present and accounted for, OST is already god-tier, narrative seems somewhat simple but we'll see how it evolves, I'm a sucker for warring kingdoms, political intrigue and medieval-style shenanigans so it's right up my alley either way.

Anyway, SRPG's are definitely my thing (where is my FFT remaster!?), I think I'm one of the only people who picked up Square's Diofield Chronicles a couple of years back, was there day 1 for Tactics Ogre remake, this is just releasing at the wrong time (I'm not playing anything until I'm done with Rebirth), might still grab it day 1 to show Atlus we want this kind of stuff 👌

That's 100% a Sega thing. Sega and Microsoft are super tight since the OG Xbox days, that's why every Sega/Atlus game has an Xbox release since Sega acquired Atlus. I'm sure Microsoft pays good money for the Xbox ports otherwise Sega wouldn't do it though.

Vanillaware probably doesn't actually know what an Xbox is, the port was almost guaranteed to be handled by Sega. I know that Atlus do not handle their Xbox releases of SMT and Persona in-house, but rely on Sega for those ports.

And decided to release the game close to FFVII Rebirth.......for me this is guarantee day one buy but most people wont even know this game is coming out because the hype around Rebirth.

That's also a Sega thing. They love sending their games out to die against big huge releases that anyone with a brain can see coming. If I was Atlus, I would be quietly seething that I had one of our best lineups in years and Sega is scheduling every release to be sent out to die like that. If I didn't know better, I would think Sega were probably trying to sabotage Atlus but unfortunately this has been Sega's MO for many years.

What does (blue up arrow) No Wait Time mean as far as Garrison Effects?

Also, can my archer support all nearby allies before a battle or do they cost Valor points?

Vanillaware noob here, checked out the demo.

Was expecting something like Xcom from previews. Turns out its a story heavy game.

Still played it more and i kinda enjoyed it. I think game flows pretty well. There is not a lot of downtime and challenging battles come at right pace between doing menial tasks in overworld.

While battles might be auto, i enjoyed taking on enemy commanders where you have to deploy multiple units and wear them out till you can deploy your cavalry. Some interesting strategy there.

Just hoping they strike a difficulty balance and don’t make later parts of game bullshit difficulty wise.

My hype for this game is so high that this game can get 0/10 a cross the board and still buy it day one.

I bought a PS5 in December and I'm already drowning in software. I've beaten Astro's Playroom, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-man 1, The Last of Us Part 1, and I'm currently playing through Miles Morales. I have Final Fantasy XVI, Returnal, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Ghost of Tsusima, and Spider-man 2 in the backlog, and I have Dragon's Dogma 2 preordered. I'm also eyeing Helldivers 2. I love Vanillaware but Unicorn Overlord needs to be amazeballs to get my attention right now. It needs to be absolutely genre defining for me to buy day 1 otherwise I'll wait for it to go on sale. It's 50+ hour game length is intimidating me right now.

Will be interesting to see how mainstream sites gonna go with this one. On one hand, I think many shitters like Schreier who moonlight as reviews on blogs like Polygon or Kotaku might love this because it's niche and therefore en vogue. On the other hand, strategy RPGs aren't the most accessible games. So who knows.

Good on Vanillaware to release a demo. That's the best sales argument ever.

Unicorn Overlord is more like unique and interesting AA title.

If you are able to enjoy AAA titles, maybe stick with those till you can no longer play them.

This is type of game you should play only when you are sure this is exactly what you are looking for.

I don’t think its genre defining cause what genre does it belong to exactly?
