UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson assassinated

Looking at the AP story, it sounds like they haven't caught the shooter yet, nor do they know who it is. He took off into Central Park and they lost track of him.

Damn. Brutal stuff. Anyone notice the gunman's gun looks to have kept having cycling issues? Like after almost every shot he is having to mess with the slide. Messy assassin?

I am completely guessing here, but I doubt it was an "assassin" as in a murder-for-hire. I'm betting it was emotionally motivated (activist, someone who lost a loved one, etc.). If that's the case, they may not have had much experience with firearms.

EDIT: I'm not going to take my original post down, but I have to say the follow was said in the heat of the moment. My opinion on this has changed clearly if you keep reading the thread. He didn't deserve to die, he's just a cell in the cancer that is the US Healthcare system.

I'm not even mad, I'll never forget getting stuck with that 5K bill at 22 they refused to cover. Fucccckkkk thhhheeeeemmmmmmm

Exactly my suspicion. I dont think its some pro. I think it's someone who either is or has someone in their family with a condition that their UH insurance either wont cover or if it does, it does a piss poor job of it. This is retaliation. Go for the person who ultimately makes the decisions.

It was only a matter of time before attempts like this were made, people are backed up against a wall when it comes to American health care.

Side note, wasn't this a plot of a TV show a few years ago?

Insane... and I doubt thus will actually address problems of the Healthcare industry. There will be another ceo doing the same stuff in a matter of days.

Condolences to the guys family if he had any

Wonder how many times you have to go and stand around waiting, hoping that your target will wander by so you can kill them.

The target was going to the annual investors meeting. Perp couldve easily found this information out, where it was being held, the date/time, and just waited for the perfect opportunity. Not hard.

Awful. Murder is a terrible way to handle a grievance.

UHC is a terrible insurance company. I had them as insurers 20 years ago.

Definitely a lot of people UHC could've pissed off.

A lot of claims are BS or lazy submissions.

Despite everyone having limits in their policies what qualifies and how much you get per year some people just submit everything and let the insurance company go through the hassle sorting out what is valid and what isn’t.

One of my bros does that. He and the wife just shotgun everything because their thinking is if they don’t they might miss out in money back. While I doit properly and only submit any manual claims when I know it qualifies for a refund back.

For you guys thinking it’s a pissed off customer it might be true.

As always, money makes the world go round.

Watch forensic files and probably 80% has to do with insurance claims or a scorned spouse wanting money.

But those insurance claims aren’t about denied customers wanting revenge. But the opposite. Committing a crime to get life insurance pay outs like a spouse killing their spouse to get $50,000.

Maybe. Don't know enough about firearms in general but that seeing that stuck out immediately. Subsonic is quieter, right?
looks like he had a double feed which is when a spent shell gets lodged into the ejection port and another round tries to chamber you have to slide the bolt back to have it eject properly. It’s usually an indicator that the spring in the magazine needs to be changed.

How we feeling about this?? Cause I really wanna cheer this on, I want CEO’s shaking in their boots to include board members….. just saying

Pretty sure there's a direct to movie called assault on wallstreet.
Guys wife gets sick and can't afford to the bills etc.
Has the guy from prison break and Edward furlong (remember him)?

Also john q is something similar. So many plots of movies involves average American unable to pay medical bills lol.

That Assassination is crazy footage. I feel like you just don't see stuff like this at all, even in USA.

You want CEOs shot dead and in this situation don’t even know the motive yet?

Absolutely terrible take. This is not the world you want, violence is never contained. It spreads and hurts the weakest the most.

I'm torn on whether or not this guy was "Super pro level" by using a pistol that had to be hand cycled for every shot and looks like it might have jammed at one point or if he was woefully lucky a cop didn't stroll by and light him up while he was struggling to get off shots. I can see the value in a suppressor in buying him a few seconds to get off the X but why bother with short cycling sub-sonics for a pistol? Any brass left on scene would be of limited value as that gun ought to be smelted down or tossed into the bay anyway. I'm not sure he was deliberately collecting brass versus having some significant pistol operation issues due to the suppressor (possibly homemade?). Especially since it looks like he wasn't wearing gloves so if he dropped a casing he would have left a great print on it (maybe he had white latex gloves though?).

Amyway, every SEAL and tier 1/ex-cia podcaster is gonna be backseat quarterbacking this for months so we'll see if this is a known tactic or what.

I get insurance company=bad for many but I hope they catch the shooter. Cold blooded murder should not be acceptable.
There was a whole line of thinking from 20 years or so ago on the internet that argued that placing bounties on people's heads was one of the only ways to keep companies and oligarchs in check.

That is scary to think about. What would be next? They go after sales reps? Bank officers? Video game CEO that works of a company that bans accounts?

C’mon man, this dudes salary is $9million while the nation is suffering under astronomical inflation living pay check to pay check while denying life saving treatments.

It’s all greed, you push the people to the breaking point, this is the end result. I’m sorry, not trying to come off as insensitive but you reap what you sow.

And in my opinion, it needs to burn to the ground and someone needs to hit the reset button.
His motive most likely is being sick tired of the bull shit.

A lot of people seem to be feeling this way. Those making policies that devalue lives and destroy families to profit act innocent and untouchable, facetiously and maliciously so. But previously there's been a sense of a way out, greater good and possible justice that kept acting out on those feelings in check.
People feel for his family, but what about the families of those that lost loved ones by denied coverage or policies of other exploitive industries. The sense of justice seems really shaken in America and going back to the basics of what comes around goes around is something held dear by a lot of people. It may or may not embolden others.

I’ll be shocked if they catch this guy. Reminds me of this agent 47 shit from a few years ago.

It’s scary to think how vulnerable we are. If somebody really wants you gone, not much you can do. Feel bad for this guy’s family.

this has to be some kind of mob/corruption thing. No way in hell some disgruntled peasant insuree has access to a guy like that, or could be so calm/calculated and be able to go through with it in this way. It's almost comical in how hitman-esque he goes about this :D

I don't think there's any societal statement to be made here about greedy companies or capitalism, at least not in that sense. There's a ton of people who state to gain financially big time from this, he basically fucked and found out

wtf is wrong with you? A person is dead. A woman lost her husband and kids lost their dad.

I can't find the paper but it was pretty interesting. It was meant for large bounties but yes, piss off enough people and you may find yourself in a bad situation.

Not my personal philosophy btw but the whole discussion had me remembering this paper.

Just because we disagree and find many of the practices of a business reprehensible, I don't think celebrating the murder of the head of the company is a great thing. Even if their decisions lead to others suffering. multiple wrongs do not make rights.

they are 2x the industry rate of 16% denials.

His wife said he was being threatened over insurance coverage.

You really don't want the wealthy and powerful going on the offensive. Things might not be amazing, but it can get much, much worse.

I mean I take back my original post. Heat of the moment and all that but I truly think healthcare in this country is due for an overhaul because it's insane. Japan has a model I think the world could learn from, being that public and private options are available but you choose but when the government option is so damn good it makes what private options there are ravage each other for competition.
