Unknown old school games you loved!

So everyone has them. Those old school games that no one else really played much (of course knowing this board, everybody played them :p) that you really enjoyed.

Here's mine...

traysia.jpg

1) Traysia - It was kind of this eastern meets western feel in rpg design. Kind of slow paced and definitely old school feel, but something about it clicked.

2) Paladin's Quest - It was a classic old school eastern RPG with a bit of a Final Fantasy vibe in terms of gameplay. The thing that was just kind of neat about it was it's artistic style. The environments were just kinda out there a bit. Just one of those games that kinda sticks in your memory back there.

3) Tecmo's Deception - The basic premise was you were a castle owner and people would intrude into your castle to kill you (well kinda like that). You weren't some sword/gun-wielding hero, you were just someone that would set up traps in your castle to catch the enemy. Then you could lead them into these traps. It was only game to really make me un-nerved the entire way through. I would have to stop playing the game for a while because it would just freak me out the closer the intruder got. I loved it for that!

Those are my 3 picks. What are yours? Show pictures if you can find them.

Search for Uniracers, the American name. You'll find a fapfest.
I know the american name. Here in Spain it wasn´t very big, that´s all.

I was going to name Little nemo too, but since there´s someone with the avatar, I thought the game wasn´t that unknown. Great game though!

Motherfucking Air Fortress.

One Must Fall 2097, Jazz Jackrabbit, Epic Pinball, Jill of the Jungle, Commander Keen, Terminal Velocity, Wacky Wheels, Zoop, and Boppin'.

The "intro" was a very moving one.. Altough I didn't get anywhere in the game, due to the small size of my brain at the age of 10 :)

The intro to this game was something also found good.. And the MUSIC!

Nobody I talk to recalls this one, even though I remember it fondly for C64, the greatest game machine evar...

I would say Little Nemo (already mentioned) and this

This game was hard, but once you got into it, the different types of planets with different gravities, the different ship parts, etc was really addicting.

and this (Apple IIgs version)

For those who don't realize it the new PS2 game Trapt is another Deception title.

Borrowed this from a friend and thought the whole idea behing switching from fighting on the floor to upside-down on the ceiling was amazing. Really made me love the aspect of switching back and forth for certain enemies or "puzzles" you had to solve by fighting both ways. You could practically go on any ceiling. Plus, I remember loving the side-scrolling action it provided.

I remember renting this from an old mom n' pop video rental store down the hill and being also addicted to its side-scrolling action elements and huge bosses you had to fight. I don't ever remember finishing it, though, but I wish I could find a copy of the game somewhere. There were also some item system with magic breads and stuff that I honestly don't remember at this point. I saw a copy of it at an EB for like 3 bucks but was so scrapped for cash I couldn't even muster up that much to pick it up. If only I could find it today :) ... and a working NES.

We got the PC version on a trip to Los Angeles when I was really young, and at the time, I considered it second only to Lemmings. Brilliant little puzzle game. Not only did I finish all 100 levels, I also randomly found the passcode for a secret version of the special last level that had the markings of all the dominoes revealed.

Quartet - played the 2 player co-op with my older sister all the time

God, I remember that game, and how it erased my life in the cold winter afternooms of my early days :-/

All I remember was the bad-ass opening theme song. Gawd I loved this game just for that song.

<3 <3 Culture Brain <3 <3

Did you know that the arcade game 'The Shanghai Kid' was another Culture Brain release? They made it back when they were still called Taiyo. It was the first game to use the Hiryu-no-ken system. Once I saw that Flying Dragon was similar to Shanghai Kid I bought that thing then and there.

When I visited Culture Brain's offices (over a pharmacy in Tokyo,) they were amazed that anyone in the US still remembered Culture Brain. I really miss their inventiveness and willingness to fuse two different genres together like they did with Flying Warriors and Scheherazade. Now they're pretty much reduced to more Mahjongg and hamster simulators :/.

Dammit, this thread is tickling my retro-sense. It wouldn't take much to make me put away all my modern consoles and pull out the NES for a few months...and I have current-gen stuf to play!

GASP!

This thread fills me with such joy...

Props to those who mentioned Ristar, Whomp-em, Metal Storm, Kickle Cubicle, and Power Blade.

I'll add:

609841.jpg

Bionic Commando-ish gameplay, with the ablity to use your 'boxing gun' to grab onto enemies, objects(to throw), or to use it to swing yourself up on top of platforms. In fact, it's a lot like Ristar in many ways.

It's rare, but it's cheap if you find it!

Teriffic, overlooked platformer.

Wow. I know it was different back then, but it's still hard to imagine anyone taking a game like that seriously considering what we have today. :D

Hammerin' Harry - The Arcade Verson. I was in love with this one. I remember the voice sample '" Let's get Hammerin'!!!" i think...
wHammerin'_Harry.png

Time-Lord - What an awful and HARD game. One of those cheap games....but it was interesting in that NES vague objective kind of way

Spaceman Bow (MSX) Awesome shooter.

KV2-2.jpg

King's Valley 2 (MSX) Ah, the memories. I'd wish Konami re-released this for the DS or something.
