Unknown old school games you loved!

Motherfucking Air Fortress.
Damn, you stole mine. Early HAL games were fun. Lolo, the original Kirby, and Air Fortress all own. Too bad Nintendo slurped up HAL and made the churn out shit like fucking Smash Bros and Pokemon Snap.

Dungeon Master:

To be fair, these last three were extremely well-known among the Atari/Amiga community-- but virtually unknown to the NES players of the day. Computer gaming was soooo much better than consoles inthis era.

Great choices.

I completely forgot about Mountain King. Man I loved that game. Thanks for the memory.

And Time Bandit was so awesome on the Amiga. When they finally ported it to Amiga, that is.

EDIT: Was Mountain King on the 2600? I remember distinctly seeing this in a magazine and wanting to play it so bad... can't remember what platform I played it on.

Psychic 5
Spent a lot of time with this game in the arcades. Always wanted a home conversion / port but as far as I know it never got one.

YES!!! Shufflepuck Cafe was the greatest game. It took a while, but I got crazy good at it. I remember loving my optical mouse (with tiled metal mousepad!) for this one.

While we're on the subject of Amiga:

Hitchhiker's Guide.. I still have the box, but don't know where the floppy went. :/

Not really unknown, but I loved Faery Tale Adventure (the original) way back. Also really loved the old arcade game, Space Panic...a weird Lode Runner-like title.

ESWAT, Genesis. The levels after you changed into the robot suit blew my mind. One boss fight gave you unlimited flying ability, and it is one of the best boss fights ever.

When I was little, I just loved Snake Rattle N' Roll. I don't know that many people who have played or remember this game, but it was very fun. The only thing I disliked about it was the crazy difficulty. I came close to beating it, but never actually did. The 2-player simultaneous was awesome, my sister and I played it for HOURS.

God my memories are littered with these gems!

The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES)

Damn, that's some horrific box art.

Great game, though -- multiplayer was hilarious with the piggybacking shenanigans. Music was really cool, and you gotta love the mini Gradius game they had in there. I think about 5 people bought this game when it came out, despite the high reviews it received.

Eh, Ganbare Goemon 2 is a much better game, IMO. And it has the only console version of Xexex. But then, that was never released outside Japan.

Looking at the SNK bowling & Magician Lord....Classics...
Did anyone used to play cyberball in the arcades? I love that game or I used to play Legacy of the Wizard on NES....I also used to spend lots of quarters playing Double Dragon.....Just use the elbow technique and it was piece of cake :lol

Goof troop for the SNES. Yeah, it was a licensed game, but goddamn, one of the funnest most enjoyble games ever!

Okay, so maybe not all unknown, but... (had to stop myself - i could have been here all night!)

I think I am going to cry...

Awesome thread guys, keept it up

To add something, I will say that Master of Magic sequel has been rumored forever, but the Microprose were out of business. I have heard gossips about someone developing a sequel, but I suppose is more wishful thinking that other thing (I would love Firaxis doing a modern-dat Master of Magic, but...).

Before Drinky comes, I will say that there is a spiritual sequel of Master of Magic: the expansion of Age of Wonders II (I don´t remember the name).

OMG, Shadow of the Ninja!!!! <3

Great Greed:

Knight's Quest (I can't find any pictures of it - but it's a Taito RPG... yeah you heard me)

Alternate Reality :The Dungeon (Atari 800) (1985)

Also released for C64 and AppleII but original version is the best.

http://www.eobet.com/alternate-reality/

Not unknown but very awesome non-linear first person RPG. Sequel to Alternate Reality: The City which was also good. Explore the dungeon, join guilds and factions. Great (for the time) texture mapped,mip-mapped, 3D graphics engine. 50 colours on screen and 4 channel sound! Truly ahead of its time.

Oh, I like you.

They were both such incredible games. AR's twenty years ahead of its time so far, and I don't really think there's ever going to be an RPG that will come close again.

Props to Ignatz for the Necromancer mention pages ago, too - Bill Williams is sorely missed.

Mystic Defender was a beautiful looking (and pretty fun) early Genesis game. I borrowed from a friend I used to take Karate lessions with.

it's actually the sequel to Spell Caster on the Master System

Xandra's big adventure on SNES, by Namco(t?)

Side scrolling platform adventure type thing, with a little jelly blob that carries a pitchfork.

<3 <3 Culture Brain <3 <3 ...
When I visited Culture Brain's offices (over a pharmacy in Tokyo,) they were amazed that anyone in the US still remembered Culture Brain. I really miss their inventiveness and willingness to fuse two different genres together like they did with Flying Warriors and Scheherazade. Now they're pretty much reduced to more Mahjongg and hamster simulators :/.

That's too bad. Those guys were cool. I loved Baseball Simulator 1000.

I would like to also second the shoutouts made to : Herzog Zwei, Faxanadu, Clash at Demonhead, Kid Chameleon, Shufflepuck Cafe, and Mystic Defender. Mystic Defender had some scary ass shit, like the monks that turned into spiders and the gross exploding zombie baby thingies.

Tsuppari Oozumo is awesome, but it never came out here

When I was a kid I saw a cartridge with that kind of cover.....I thought it was going to be another Zelda, but I didn't go like, "mommie, I want that" at the time.....Ugh...I regret not doing it...Because knowing the game was a good game today...Its just...damnit..

:) It looks like it was made by Konami...Because of those monsters...they look like they take up the majority of the screen.

Oh yeah, this was a great game. I remember going back and forth between it and Marble Madness at my friend's house.

Battle of Olympus is another great game, I only beat it once, if I remember it was really difficult.
Absolutley Battle of Olympus had to be one of my favorite NES games. I was totally into Greek mythology at the time, so this game came at exactly the right time. Some screens:
