Unreal Championship 2 Demo released...Xbox..Live Enabled

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Just picked it up tonight. Haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but thought I'd let interested parties know if you're heading out to the gamestore this evening. I picked mine up at Gamestop. It is definitely playable on LIVE.

Played this for a few minutes last night, and overall I feel pretty meh about the game. Played super laggy and just felt half-assed. Jedi Academy played much smoother but who knows, maybe it's just me. :/

Is it Live Only?

Unreal Championship 2: I was a big fan of the first PC Unreal Tournament game. I rented Unreal Championship and thought it was okay but it just didn't have the UT feel. This time it seems they got it right. The demo supports single player against bots, system link, and Xbox live play. The graphics looks good and they're smooth and fast. I love the controls, within minutes I was switching between 3rd person melee and 1st first person shooting with ease. It was frenetic and just damn fun. (Edit) They give you 3 characters and 3 maps to play on. 2 of the maps are geared to 4 players while the 3rd is recommended for one on one. They have 3 gametypes:Capture the Flag, Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch.

I am really hoping Midway gives us better servers than Atari did.

UC was a mess online when you had more than 4 players, even on the best pinging servers.

Midway officially announced the campaign yesterday. According to the press release, the demo is officially available, only through pre-order. So just put $5, and they'll give it to you. I hear there is a Live enabled demo coming in OXM soon as well.

very pretty graphics

but inconsistent framerate and tearing all over the place :((

my eyes hurt now!

not buying it

Maybe you played a different game than I did, because the frame rate was very smooth when I tried the demo out. :)

(This was offline)

This game ROCKS. Cannot wait for the full release; this is going to be the only game that's as good as Halo 2 is multiplayer IMO.

If anything, strike Iron Phoenix off your purchase list...UC2 does everything it does BETTER.

ive only played it offline and i liked it A LOT. i kept getting owned by the bots because i was terrible but i still kept on playing. im not sure if i would buy it at $50 but its definitely on my radar.

the demo seems promising except theres no damned controller config, so you're stuck playing the 'default' controls and non inverted Y axis... that sucks... i can only pray the control config in the actual game is like UC1 and not like Unreal II...

Go to the Options menu, select controller, there's the invert Y option.

Seemed really cool when I first popped it in. The presentation is off the charts. Its like that episode of the Simpsons where Milhouse goes, "All I did was enter my name!". Its that awesome.

But then you play it for an hour and learn what its about. Its STILL pretty fun, but in a mediocre kinda way. The melee seems all fucked up. You just twirl around a buncha times and its hard to tell if you are landing blows or not. Then you just explode because apparently, they got you.

I'm going to keep playing it though and see if it does anything more for me with more time.

This is how I feel about the game after putting a decent amount of time into it. Also, I have experienced slowdowns in the demo as well.

Hopefully these problems are rectified in the final game.

What's with all these new games with Vsnyc disabled? Ughh. I hope the next-gen systems don't use this.

That's the only thing I didn't like about it. Gonna pick it up anyway though.

yeah i hate it when they disable vsync, tearing is soooo annoying.

ug, i couldnt agree more.

they spend all of their time making the graphics as pretty as then can, but as soon as you see it in motion the tearing becomes atrocious.

it annoys me very much. id much rather have the graphics toned down a bit if it would perfom better and not tear.

disabled vsync = suck!

too may games this gen have the same shit going on. ive been pissed about this since Metal Arms. :/

Wow, really enjoyed it. Only played it on LIVE. Couldn't get over how much I liked switching between 1st/3rd person. I also thought the graphics were quite good, I was really worried about the tearing as that's bothered me in a few games (Metal Arms), but it was nothing very noticeable to me. All in all I was amazed because earlier that day I was re-discovering Unreal Tournament on PC and was wishing there was a shooter with more of that feeling on console (Halo is very different). Lo and behold, I got around to playing this excellent demo. The same? No, no, but a wonderful adaptation with the feel of UT. Definite buy for me now.

My friend and I were thoroughly impressed by the demo. Epic Games have crafted an intense and furious FPS, where melee combat reigns supreme. The environments were large, detailed, and the overall speed and was fast (even moreso when you toggle on the Speed mutator).

I really liked the artstyle of Unreal Championship 2. The arenas were impressive due to their sci-fi-ish looks, and the use of bold and vibrant colors made everything stand out. The field of vision (esp. in 3rd person mode) made navigating the levels quite fun, and there was no feeling of claustrophobia (*cough....Halo 2....cough*). The animations of the characters were nice as well.....seeing your fighter flip around acrobatic style (even more with activated Nimble power) while pelting away at competitors was awesome to watch.

The framerate had some hiccups (if the final build has a buttery framerate, then this experience will be truly gorgeous), but for the most part was smooth. The modes of play look to be weighty, but it's a bummer there's no offline multiplayer split-screen play (only through System Link).

This demo turned me in favor of putting Unreal Championship 2 as a must-buy. With final polishing and tune-ups, the Xbox FPS library will be adding more to its collection come this April. Midway Games has a solid hit on their hands with this one!

I was pretty hyped for this game last E3 way moreso than Halo 2 but I feel underwhelmed from how floaty and unbalanced the combat feels. Flying all over the place Dragon Ball style is not what I wanted for a UT game they definitely could of found a more intuitive way to implement useful mellee combat into an FPS. As it is its terribly unbalanced in the matches I had with some friends. 3 of us where 10 plus year FPS vets and this one kid kept owning us goin crazy with mellee moves. This feels nothing like the UT2k4 engine the physics are different and the characters don't seem to have as much weight to them. It guess it works for the game-style but its not something that fits a FPS even if it is a hybrid.

It'd be cool if there was a UC.ini file placed on the Hard Drive. Vsync is a freaking one-line boolean with UE.

If there are any fine people with the NTSC demo who have access to a PAL Xbox, is there any chance you could quickly whack it in and see if it's region coded?

I really thought this game looked crappy, but I played the demo and loved it. The graphics and colours are a bit...not great.... but damn fun!

I tried this the past two nights on live and against bots. The complaint about it not feeling like a UT game is on the mark but it was designed that way. If you watch the developer video on the demo disk they specificaslly address this. Paraphrasing; "The first UC was a straight port and not much effort went into it to make it console friendly and that was a mistake. Because UC2 is built from the ground up for the Xbox we took many liberties to make the game the ultimate console expereince." Also, technically it is not a true FPS. From listening to him I got the feeling that Epic expects most players to use 3rd person all of the time though (paraphrasing) "everyone will play to their own style". If you look through the options all of the weapons are fully customizable so when they're equipped you automatically go to 3rd or 1st person.

The complaint about being the game being unbalanced is premature. The goods are in the characters, the weapons and the adrenaline abilities. There are so many possible permutations you as the player need to find what works and in what situation. The adrenaline abilities are sweet. I was using the female character and she had 6 abilities among which were speed (this is gonna be killer in capture the flag), nimble (jump where you normally can't), wraith (I have no idea but it looked way cool), etheral (your opponent I believe knows you are in this mode but you appear to them slightly off frm your actual position), vampire (I believe as you damge other players you channel their damge into your health) and siphon (I believe you drain health from other players, a non persistent state). Some abilities are shared while most are unique to the character.

The controller interface is well done. The abilities are easily accessible with no more than two presses of X and a press of LT, RT or A. Each press of X denotes a set of abilities.

A - Jump
B - Melee switch / Melee power attack
Y - Switch weapon
X - Adrenaline menu
LA Click - Jump (very useful not having to press A)
RA Click - Target (does not aim for you, just keeps the player in view)
RT - Fire
LT - Secondary Attack

The graphics are gorgeous. The levels are purdy and the character models are solid. The framerate, considering this is a Unreal game running on old hardware is excellent.

The matches I played were all lag free except for one. This game is shipping with an amazing 40 maps plus content download. Don't have XBL, no sweat the games I played against the bots were good and the AI is very good having multiple (the same as UT) difficulys levels. The demo had a few mutators and I'm sure the final version will have more. I was on the fence about UC2 becuase of how shitty UC was. After the demo this has moved into must get status.
