Fun fact : Doom 2016 > Doom Eternal.
Ah yes I sure love using the super shotgun in every level for every encounter (where I destroy a gore nest and fight enemies blinking in instead of organically appearing).

I like Doom 2016 but Eternal was wayyyy better at having actual challenge and variety in the gameplay.

What you just described is the exact reason D16 > Eternal. Super Shotgun 4 life. Eternal's ammo management was tedious, the game was tedious not challenging.

I think Doom 2016 was a decent game but it is massively overrated. I think the reason behind that is because most thought it was going to be pretty bad and it surprised people.

Doom Eternal is genuinely one of the best arena shooters ever created. Absolutely sublime.

I've thought Doom 2016 was better as well. But I have to say it isn't.

Doom 2016, when I replay it, is pretty much only arena battles, and I feel some go on for a bit too long. By 75% into the campaign I kinda wanted it to end. Doom 2016 starts with imps, then pinky, and every time the tier gets higher. The game pretty much does this from beginning to end.

Doom Eternal has MUCH better pacing. Yes I do dislike its ammo system still, but the battles themselves are actually far shorter and more variation is thrown in. What makes it look like more are the ammo fodder goons, but they're harmless. Once Doom Eternal clicked, It was absolutely insane, it was like playing DMC. You'd be air dashing, grappling, switching weapons, using secondaries etc on the fly. I can see why the ammo management is there, since 2016 would be super shotgun all day, but I still could do with a little higher ammo cap.

Play Eternal on Normal if needed, as Hard is far more brutal than it was on 2016. At least until you mastered its mechanics and know your enemies. I could see people changing their opinion on it. And 120hz is godlike.

Cool idea. It almost feels like 2016 got the Diablo 3 look while they wanted to make something more like Diablo 4. The darker, grittier look versus the bright red tones. Kinda gives me that Quake 4 vibe.

New DOOM is good, but it's not nearly as re-playable as Classic DOOM. I feel like it's a good interpretation of what modern DOOM is. Eternal felt like they tacked on a lot, but it's not something I'd play over and over again. It was good game to finish.

Both are great games, but Eternal is objectively better in terms of SP content. Stronger arenas, better utilization of weapons and enemies, increased challenge, absolutely brimming with fanservice. The only way you can genuinely think 2016 is better is if you sucked at Eternal and could't do the literal 4 minutes of platforming across a 12 hour game.

I hated the cool toned color pallete of many eternal levels. Just doesnt match Doom feel. Snow...really?

The canceled version of Doom 2016 had way better contextual finishers than what we got

That is... a very good point. It was a tad colourful.

Doom has always been an arena shooter.
Arena to me = locked down area till you kill "waves" of respawning enemies. Or somerhing akin to Quake 3's sport focused level design.

No respawning, no waves, no lock down, no arena.

I felt like Eternal's arenas felt more organic, like I was progressing through the level instead of getting locked down in a room time after time like if I was playing Smash TV or something.

And yeah Eternal is miles above 2016, it's haters just got filtered.
