US PSP's Are Here

If Sho Nuff's comment that the video is actually encoded at NTSC resolution, then i have to wonder about the sound. If it really is encoded in surround, then i rescind my comments on running out of space. If that's the case, Sony's really serious about positioning the format as a competitor to DVDs.

But as for the PSP itself, the only kind of surround you could get out of it would be ProLogic II (because there's only a stereo jack on it, right?).

While sony told me the online wouldn't be ready, I brought Twisted Metal home just to see if it was on or not. Well, looks like sony is testing it, because I just played a 3 player match wirelessly, online. Must tweak my story comments tomorrow. :)

It's fucking brilliant. The online shit works great so far. Lobby setup is nice. I want a keyboard now. Looks like no WoW play tonight!

Man, the thought of instant online deathmatches anywhere at my house... can't wait

It would be really embarassing for nintendo if the PSP goes online before the DS. It was the biggest selling point for the DS, at least for me.

Similarly, the DS indicator feature was a big selling point with me. Even given the slim likelihood of finding another DSer early on unless you lived in a big city, it's still a disappointment to see it dropped. It's both funny and sad to see how Nintendo's dropped the ball early on with the DS.

But the PSP is already online - two of the titles in stores now can be played online now, while members of the press that received Twisted Metal: Head On can play online as well.

That's one way, though it's not very practical in a portable solution. Dolby's also developed Dolby Virtual Speaker, which provides a surround soundfield with only stereo speakers. When the 7.1 PSP spec was released, i thought maybe Sony was licensing that technology, or maybe developed their own. Doesn't look like either is the case, going by the PSP specs via the official PR, though that's not to say it's impossible within AVC, which can handle 5.1 streams and downmix them to stereo.

Dolby's got info, as well as a flash demo (top right) at http://www.dolby.com/consumer/technology/virtual_speaker.html

i'm afraid to go much further... KLee might be reading.

So since the media outlets are getting their units, when should stores be getting their shipments in? Probably early next week?
i've been speaking to the manager at EB almost daily, and he told me they may be in tomorrow or Friday. Hopefully it makes it in tomorrow along with Wipeout Pure.

Nintendo DS is not online, it's NO LINE! Muahaha

Some stores already have them

Right...just because a store has them in doesn't mean they can sell them. It's STREET DATED, so those of you with reserves at EB & GameStop or any other national chain will probably have to wait until Thursday, March 24 to purchase the PSP. Unless...

Unless you have a guy at Walmart who doesn't know any better, and or doesn't care, and sells the unit to the right person. When I lived back up in Chicago we were able to break street dates all the time because of the ineptitude of our local Wal-Mart. But yeah, it is street dated, and I would assume that in the years that have passed WalMart has gotten better about those things.

But, we can hope. (I know it's only a week, but I'm itching to get some quality time in with Lumines and WipeOut...)

Re-posting this here to get an answer maybe? =)

According to Gamespot's US hardware report:

We were able to configure our network settings and immediately log onto our internal wireless network. The network-configuration options are fairly robust. Anyone who has configured a PC with a wireless card will recognize all of the available options. The unit also offers an "easy" configuration mode that allows the PSP to automatically detect and connect to an open wireless network. Our CNET office building offers free wireless connectivity, but as with most public hot spots, you first have to click through a terms and conditions HTML page before getting Internet access. Using the PSP, we were able to reach the page and click on the "I agree" button.

So does it have a bit of a built in browser for hotspots or what?!?

It's probably like some PS2 games where you have to go to a page and say you agree to terms of service. I remember Resident Evil Outbreak did this.

They really need to release an online browser for PSP

2 questions for those with a boxed US PSP system:

1. How long is the US warranty period?

2. Does the battery have a charge right out of the box?

thanks.

Some stores do break hardware street dates, unless firmly instructed not to by corporate. It's not common, and usually it's not as common at EB and GS as it is places like Walmart or Target, but it happens.

Maybe referring to this?
ATV Off-Road Fury had many of the same modes, plus one cool extra mode. Instead of connecting up to the game player lobby, the wireless mode menu for ATV included Ad-Hoc, Online, and Online Community. This online mode connects to the ATV web community outlet, allowing players to check scores, add friends to their ATV buddy list, chat, and much more. -ign

Don't think so, Nep.

They just said that they were able to OK though a CNET html Terms and Cond page.

but as with most public hot spots, you first have to click through a terms and conditions HTML page

Which I thought the PSP didn't support?

Its probably nothing but ???

i was going to make a thread about the disappearance of 7.1 audio earlier. Was it ever in the official specs? i remember reading specs off a Japanese site that was supposed to be official, but i don't remember if it was on the Playstation site or not.
It only showed up on early specs that came out of the original E3 2003 announcement, but was never mentioned by Sony again.

Does all this inability to twist and pop out UMDs mean I'm going to have to retire my avatar? :(

No. I would love to keep being reminded of one of the finer moments of Kutaragi's beautiful design.

I've written up a bunch of quick impressions on the U.S. PSP and some of the games I've received so far, including Metal Gear Acid, over at Kotaku:

And finally, a big picture of the PSP surrounded by a bunch of other mobile gaming devices like the GBA, DS and N-Gage old and new.

In response to this...

Spider-Man 2: Sweet, I can carry Kirsten Dunst around in my bag and whip her out to show to friends. The sound and picture quality is just startling. IÂ’m still trying to figure out how Mossberg contrived to not know how to pause the movie or skip scenes. Dangit, I keep hitting those top trigger buttons and skipping scenes. I wonder if you can turn that option off. I hope so, I donÂ’t always have total control of these big oafy hands of mine.

The music videos included on the sample disc are pretty nice. The sound is truly impressive. I do wish I could pump things up a bit in the volume department. IÂ’m usually not happy unless IÂ’m killing off my hearing while listening to music.

Alright, enough with the foreplay, time for some games.

I believe you can "lock" the buttons so they don't respond. You can do that by putting the power down switch in a certain position. Some of the Japanese GAFers can fill you in on the details.

Like most Sony devices, the PSP has one of those power switches that you push up to switch on or switch off, and push down to lock. It's fairly self-explanatory to anyone who's powered on a PSP, which is why I think he's referring to the general fiddly-ness of the triggers and just switching the triggers off.

Just played a game of online PSP Twisted Metal Head-On with Jim, I think, from G-A. It was a blast. Chatting is an enormous pain in the ass, but game play is friggin seamless.

So from this do we just derive that Kobun sucks at TM? He seemed to think it was pretty horrible.
He also mentioned that he never played any of the previous TM games :P

Oh in that case Spider-man 2 is full screen - no black bars. But only Normal mode option for viewing.

I think you are wrong... The PSP lcd widescreen to begin with... Becuase of this no black bars display on top and bottom. If it was full screen there would be black bars on the sides.

I think we can conclude that different people have different opinions regarding certain games.

Hehehe.
No comment on his gameplay abilities.
I can't wait to try it out with six players. Though I was dumped from the connection after the first game ended and in the middle of the second game, so that's no good.

Could you describe the process of getting online with Twisted Metal? How do you form games, chat interface, etc.

Less ragging on my editor more talky about how Head On compares to Black. Does it feel just like 2, or did they keep a bit of what they did with Black?
