The Academy Award-nominated action film "House of Flying Daggers" will be released in North America on the Universal Media Disc video format that plays on the new PSP handheld entertainment system. Street date is April 19 -- day and date with the DVD -- with the suggested list price (SLP) of $28.95.

The first slate of previously announced catalogue UMD titles includes "XXX," "Hellboy," "Resident Evil 2" and "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" and debuts on April 19 and will be priced at $19.95 (SLP).

Additional UMD titles are scheduled to be released monthly thereafter. These UMD releases will include a mix of day and date titles priced similarly to their respective DVDs and catalogue titles priced at $19.95 (SLP).

The announcement was made by Marshall Forster, Executive Vice President for SPHE North America.

"The release of these hit action films for the PlayStation Portable marks an important chapter in the personal entertainment industry for our consumers and a new, incremental business for our business partners," noted Mr. Forster. "SPHE is delighted to be part of the introduction of this remarkable entertainment technology to the home entertainment market." "

No official link yet. But House of Flying Daggars on UMD is cool. I'll probably pick that up! :D The Suggested List Prices seem on par with DVDs so we are probably looking at 15 bucks a UMD movie on release. Probably $19.99 for HoFD.

yeah, its confirmed:

I cannot wait until "BOMBA" is added to the list of banned phrases. Ugh, I fucking hate Reirom-Ism's. Uh, anyway, "I'd rather buy the DVDs" :lol

Hopefully you haven't seen the newest one. I swear that is the fucking worst ever.

Oh shit.

This info, which came from the IGN boards and can't find a source, came from the GA front page! :lol

Considering PSP games will range from $40 to $50, idiots might actually think $20 - $30 umd movies are a value....? o.o;

Either way......!

Ripping existing DVDs to MP4 for use on the PSP seems to make better sense. But for those that can't figure that out (many parents) - this will likely make good sense.

Will UMD movie rips onto memory stick look as good as movies made especially for the PSP format? I doubt it.

I wouldn't mind paying a little more for a good copy of House of Flying Daggers to watch on the go.

a little more = $28.95 .. unless you plan to only buy the UMD version and not the DVD

$28.95 SLP

Which translates to a $15-$20 in store price.

Most DVD movies have a $29.95 SLP

Having a $19.95 SLP could possibly mean $9.99 in store for movies but I doubt it.

I think "new" UMDs will be $28.95, while backlog movies will be $19.99.

I'm sure stores will start slashing prices when stuff like XXX rots on the shelves.

O_o

It'll be in line with DVD brick and mortar store prices.

I.E. I expect HoFD to be $19.99 for the DVD in stores so the UMD version will be the same price.

I'm sure some places like Sam Goody and Suncoast will attempt to gouge a higher price but places like Best Buy, Target, Walmart should have the movie at $19.99.

Yup, I'm curious to see what distribution will be like. Will they be placed near DVDs? Games?

It's all about how they will be presented.

Of course....

Well that sucks. I guess sitting and staring at something for 2 hrs plus would be no different to playing a game(on a psp)...although watching movies on a portable device seems off to me. Ive not actually seen a PSP running yet so im not sure what to make of it all.

What does the pricing matter when there is no UMD content?

I wonder if any studio outside of Sony is going to support it?

These things could take off if they're available at Blockbuster and through NetFlix. I wouldn't want to buy a UMD movie for $20, but renting one for a few bucks for entertainment while travelling wouldn't be bad.

Looking at the bright side, this confirms that getting an import PSP from Japan was a good choice.

If the speculation of regionfree games (which I believe once I see) is true, there is no downside to getting a device from Japan. My only worry was that I would have picked up 4.99 - 9.99 movies as impulse purchases on airports, but couldn't have because of the fact that movies definately are region coded.

One less worry, thanks Sony!

Price ranging from ~$13 to ~$20 USD.

UMD's don't have enough room for the extras right, so it's just the movie? And I'm suppose to pay almost as much, in some cases as much for a UMD version as I am for a DVD?!??!?!

Riiiiight. Spiderman 2 will be the only UMD movie I own for a looooooong time.

I rarely, if ever, watch the extras included on DVDs. Still, I would rather rent a UMD movie for a week for $5, than spend $15 to buy one.

I wonder about this too. Is it wrong to assume that UMD movies doesn`t need the same high resolution as DVD`s, due to the small screen, so fitting all the content of a DVD will be possible on an UMD disc?

Well, considering that a 90 minute PSP-format movie even at some really nice resolution and compressions rate takes only around 700-800MB, I don't see why they can't have extras like those found in DVDs.

There is a world of difference between UMD video quality and Mpeg4 DIY stuff. Way more pixels, and the compression is better too. Just take a look at the intro to Ridge Racers to get an idea of just how good UMD video can look.

I'd buy UMDs impulse style at the airport if they were cheap, just because they would look and sound so good. But considering the relative ease of getting DVDs onto memory sticks, that price has to come way down.

If you have a gig stick, you have plenty of room for at least 4 hours of MPEG4 movie that will look good as the ones on UMD. Remember that the screens only 480x272.

I know that, but do you really think the average movie will take up all of those 1.8 gigabytes? Besides, the extras on a DVD are typically small in terms of space they take up. I'm sure they'll be able to include some deleted scenes, a couple of trailers, and a making of featurette.
