Valve confirms Half-Life: Alyx, full reveal coming later this week.

I knew it would be VR if Half Life ever came back

Except thought it would be a full fledged Half life 3.

I mean wasn't it assumed this would be the case? Valve has been transparent that the only way this franchise will see the light of day is if they can push the industry forward. VR is obviously what they've been focusing on. Not to mention the leaks.

aLSO, PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT vr IS A FAILURE.

Check this video out.

The issue with VR isn't the graphics nor the production value, Batman Arkham VR was a AAA VR game but it was extremely short.

And that's the problem; they're overly simplified and short, the main thing about VR right now is its potential. Real life simulation can finally be achieved, or realistic fantasy swordfighting combat, but the staying potential is what's throwing people like me off from even touching it. At this moment in time it IS a failure.

I'm hella ready. VR is great, Valve is great, Valve and VR and an awesome franchise should be great.

People bitching need a second job

How has Valve been great in the last 5 years? Heck I think they're overrated but it's a genuine question... they haven't even made anything worthwhile in the last 5 years.

You may not want it, you may not be able to afford it. But it is valve, so it could be fucking brilliant.
It does seem to take them biblically long time to do anything, but when they do..

Bought a PSVR and an Oculus Rift, I can't play for longer than 30 minutes without a break. Really wanted to like VR but I can't stand it, hopefully they make an option to play on a regular tv screen.

If you watch Skillups video, he says that the game is 20-40 hours long.
:)

For 12 years, we've waited.

For 12 years, we've re-played Half-Life 1 and 2, and the episodes, always ending with that iconic cliffhanger...

For 12 years, there has never been a more anticipated video game, if we're judging by time waited.

For 12 years, Valve has refused us one thing.

The thing everyone wants.

And today they announce...

"lol, here's a VR prequel where you play as Alyx."

...

Pardon me as I lose what little hope I still clung to in this tragic, selfish, and miserable world.

A prequel... where you play as Alyx... in VR.

mfw title made me expect a HL game about Alyx scavenging before Gordon returned and got a VR thing instead

Oh, well. At least it will probably sell enough that Valve might decide to give us Ep3 or HL3, or something.

It's been super obvious for years that any new HL game would be VR exclusive. Myself and many others have said it for years.

It's just a shame because not everyone will get to play it. Not everyone can afford a VR headset and even of those who can they simply don't want to buy one for whatever reason.

I won't be playing it unfortunately. All I can hope for is that it is playable on a monitor at some point.

I love the outrage.

VR is vastly superior for atmospheric shooters, it's not even fucking close.

The immersion is so intense people are blown away playing simple wave shooters, now were getting a full fledged Half Life? Lol. This is insane news. Keeping downplaying poor people.

Not sure what's that game supposed to be but I remember hearing "if they want VR to take off, they should release HL3 - VR only" couple of years ago.

Yep. Let them hate. Anyone who plays real VR can see the insane potential.

No it won't, because those numbers don't support my clearly biased argument which I must win at all costs - someone that isn't me.
Does the Rift S come with the PC necessary to drive it at the level needed to play this upcoming flagship VR game?

As long as Half-Life: Alyx (inspired name choice btw) is guaranteed to meet the bar set by Valve's releases the past 7 years how could anyone balk at the opportunity to drop $1000+ to try their latest maybe not half assed game?!!
I mean DOTA, Artefact, Autochess Game #3487? Wowee wee wow! Who doesn't love that shit..

Well, me for one. I got money to burn, but I'm not dumb enough to waste it on niche hardware only supported by a bunch of has beens and indies..

The PC shouldn't even be as big of a deal in this conversation as people make it out to be. More than half of Steam users have the PC already, and a lot of others will only be a part or two away. At this point the gameplay reveal will be a make or break it moment for people, and lets just say I'm feeling very confident there.

Gamers with money to burn would already have a capable PC.

And for you to say VR is only indies and "has beens" shows your not informed at all. Asgards Wrath alone is better than anything I've played in a monitors/TVs all generation.

Final frame on era:

Finally I can talk about this :)

First had the privilege of playing and working on it a bit over 2 years ago during my time at Valve. It was honestly already a crazy amazing experience back then, Valve has poured so much love, care, and though into the next story in the Half-Life universe. I can't even imagine how much they've polished it these last two years.

If the direction is still the same as it was some time ago, there's another huge announcement tied to this that'll likely happen simultaneously or soon after, which nobody has heard or mentioned anything of. That could mean it was scrapped or is under particularly tight wraps. I'm hoping for the latter :)

While it is nice of Valve to finally push their hardware with games, when it comes to Half-Life I'd rather have Half-Life 3 or a confirmation that it isn't coming before announcing a fucking spinoff.

I don't even have a VR headset, nor I plan to buy one anytime soon.
STILL, of the two scenarios I'd pick getting a VR title that could be an impressive technical achievement over getting a traditional game that I would be able to play, but completely average/unremarkable.

I wonder if Valve still got it.
They used to be a developer I had great admiration for, but after releasing DOTA 2, which is their last game where I could see their "seal of quality", everything they've done has been completely forgettable for me.
I like what they did over time with Steam, but as game developers I can't even tell anymore if they are supposed to have any talent left.

How does one see his own ass in VR?
cant see my own ass IRL
maybe in a mirror?

What a weird concept.
i wonder if alyx got a bigger ass :messenger_mr_smith_who_are_you_going_to_call:

There are some mental cases in this thread.

Valve have hinted towards and iirc, flat out said "Half-life 3 won't be released until it define the genre". Gabe has often hinted towards VR being the platform for which Half-life 3 will launch.

Releasing a 'tester' VR game is just Valve playing around to see what they can create. Nothing but good things will come of this.

You guys were asking for more "full fat" games to justify the VR purchase, well you better start saving those pennies, because we will be seeing more and more desirable VR games as the medium continues to expand. PlayStation 5's going all in on VR too.

2019 is the year that gave us BOTH a new Tool album AND a new Half-Life game. Both of these had a myth-like status for almost a decade.

Let that sink in.

Knew it. Always thought that a new (HL) game from Valve would be VR. They are not interested in traditional singleplayer games anymore. Looking forward to see what they've come up with.

Who cares lol, VR can have all future half life titled games in exclusive, as long as it´s not HL3.

Not quite understanding the hate. People were literally criticising VR for games like this NOT existing. Now that they do exist, "Fuck VR!" ???

Anyway, I have complete confidence this will be amazing. If indie developers can make great VR shooters, you can sure as hell bet Valve will knock it out of the park.

I'll gladly take them. However you should probably come to terms with the fact that if this game is a success, Half-Life will always be VR-exclusive going forward even for HL3. At least outside of Half-LIfe Tactics or Half-Life: The Card Game.

Reason being? Simple really. You can't just create huge gameplay advances through HL:A and take a big step backwards with HL3. No, HL3 if it ever becomes a reality after a successful HL:A launch, will be a VR exclusive that probably uses BCIs or haptic gloves as the new gameplay innovation.
