Valve Updates Team Fortress 2 to 64-Bit, Boosting Performance of the 17-Year-Old FPS

Valve has updated its near 17-year-old competitive first-person shooter Team Fortress 2 to finally add 64-bit support.

The update, which some fans are calling the most significant from Valve itself in years, should result in a performance improvement for most users. Reports indicate Team Fortress 2’s frames-per-second count is increased by around 20%, resulting in a much smoother experience.

While this Team Fortress 2 update is certainly welcome, it has done little to calm the constant stream of requests from the player base for Valve to tackle the game’s most troublesome issue: bots. Team Fortress 2 has had a bot problem for years, and despite a community-wide drive to raise awareness for the issue, there is little sign of improvement.

Crazy how this game had been 32 bit for 17 years and they get the idea to update it now of all times. Better late than never but a very outdated move lmao

Typically moving from 32 to 64 bit actually hurt performance ever so slightly. I'm guessing they bundled their own version of DXVK into the game now, causing it to render through Vulkan which has been known to boost framerates of D3D9 based games.

Valve still has programmers working for them?

Great.
Now they can officially uncap the framerate on The Orange Box so we don't have to rely on hacks to play at 60/120fps.

When CSGO was updated to 64-bit it did not offer any wild performance gains, or any at all. But it was kept in tip top shape before that, unlike TF2 which has languished with old code in maintenance mode for a decade.

What I want more than anything is for HL2 to get fully remastered so that you don't have loading screens ever few minutes.

Is this the case for x86? I thought x86-64 gained a performance boost mainly because it doubled the # of registers.

IIRC ARM 64-bit also got a nice performance + efficiency improvement because ARMv8 made several improvements over A32

When you’re worth billions and have a few hits, you lock them in and ride it out. They’re on autopilot for the time being. Until Gabe dies there’s no need to take real risks.
