Details on Nintendo Switch 2 free updates for select games (HDR, improved iq and fps, gameshare)

Looks like that when the game runs at 60 on Switch 1 the frame rate improvements is not mentioned, is only when the game go from 30 on Switch 1 to 60 on Switch 2. So is 100% that Links Awakening is going to be 60 locked.

I see at least there is a consistent pattern we can decipher. They only mention it when changing the FPS target. In a way it's like not even acknowledging the original game ever had a problem.

"This game always targeted 60FPS, so what are you talking about nothing was changed" lol

Exactly, the pattern is pretty clear in that list. Also looks like Nintendo is going to use their own patented upscaled method for Switch 1 games on Switch 2, so probably we are going to see another wave of games receiving upgrades in the future because is a game per game treatment.

it's kinda weird that they are so vague.
what does better image quality mean? what does improved framerate mean?

4k? 1440p? 1080p? 120fps? 60fps? just less frame drops at the same target?
30 —> 60 FPS
Res up to 1080p handheld and 1440p docked using the Nintendo patented upscale method.
HDR implementation

CDPR, please update Witcher 3 to the Next Gen edition in 60fps.

Alien Isolation without horrible input lag and with 60fps would be nice too.

L.A. Noire 60fps pls.

Make sense. Then Bayo 3 should be able to run at 900p@60 without any issue (or was it 810p)

Call me retarded but I would expect all games to just get a performance/visual boost by default on a more powerful system. I don't get why there's such bullshittery around all of this.

"Updates." As barebone as possible and people are still cheering. How do they get away with this shit?
Complains about free stuff being barebones and leaves

I wonder when they say smooth frame rate for games that already had a smooth frame rate, if they mean 120fps rather than 60fps. SM3DW ran at 1080p/60fps, only smoothing you can do at that point is 120fps.

A lot if games will get a boost by default. But in the cases of adding HDR or raising the target resolution/framerate, patches like these ones are required.

Think of all PS4 games not having a PS4 Pro patch, they run the same way on the PS5. Like GTA V PS4 which runs at 1080p@30fps on the PS5

I'm almost certain that they will.

These are patches in excess of that, which as you know from experience on other platforms, don't all come on day one.

It's reasonable to expect games that had trouble maintaining their frame rate to find it more consistent without any patch, for example.

But if the game was originally targeted and achieved a locked 30, you won't see any improvement until they apply a patch to raise the target like a PS4 Pro scenario.

Does this mean that Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will also benefit without having to shill out extra money? I am not interested in the "extra content" for those games.

The most glaring omissions for me that didn't receive a free or paid update yet:
  • Animal Crossing
  • Smash
  • Mario Wonder
  • Switch Sports
  • Mario Maker 2
I'm interpreting this as these will either be getting a new entry or a Switch 2 edition with new content in the nearish future. Mario Wonder obviously being the leading candidate from this list to get the new edition treatment.

I came excited for the "free updates" and have become disappointed. I was hoping Legend of Zelda LA and EoW would get frame rate bump to locked 60 fps. It doesn't appear this is the case. I am terribly disappointed, and slightly mad.

Knowing what we know now, i actually wish something different. I know the optics would be bad. But, i wish we would have just had NO BC, and let Nintendo upgrade games they want and fill in software gaps with 4-6 Switch 1 enhanced titles a year. Deluxe versions like Kirby, Mario Party, or BoTW. This would have been preferable.

I'm 99% sure that these games will run better on Switch 2 by simply sticking the old cart into the system and doing nothing else, similar to a PS4 game in a PS4 Pro without a patch that struggled to keep its FPS target on the base system. I wouldn't expect the forest scene to chug for example.

But the "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" upgrades appear massive in excess of that. Like much much better higher resolution textures.

Calm down and read rest of thread plz

As long as the Mario games run at 60 in docked mode I'll be happy.

Considering going for Zelda BOTW as my 1st Switch 2 game after I get done with E33.

Switch 2 doesn't run Switch 1 games natively, every game needs to be tested, and performance/Visual upgrades have to be applied "Manually".

If it's anything like PS5 then most of the games that aren't initially supported will get supported eventually.

The answer is somewhere in between, because I don't believe they are adopting a system where no games run until/unless they are approved, like Xbox 360 BC titles. Rather, they have a Switch 1 BC mode that will attempt to run just about anything you throw at it. Whether it has any comparability problems or needs any tweaks (like a PS3 emulating PS2 games instead of the day one model) would open up on a case by case basis. While some games might require a free patch like this, most should run the original game just fine without "passing" first. In some cases, performance upgrades happen passively because the base game used dynamic resolution and suffered framedrops.

Why are they pretending the Xenoblade Chronicles X upgrade doesn't exist when we all know it does. A game like that will benefit significantly from it too.

C'mon Nintendo....

I read the thread. You all make one assumption. That the Nvidia tech will automatically improve some frame rate. Personally, I think marginal improvement is possible. But, the only way i see a massive bump i Frame rate is with games that have "unlocked" frame rates. Games like MH Rise for example.

I don't think Nintendo would commission Nvidia to go the "extra mile" on BC. I think Nintendo wants it just "good enough".

Which is why I am disappointed in Nintendo. They continue to make many disappointing business decisions leading into NS2 launch.

I think you missed a few posts. We've detected a pattern: Nintendo is only advertising FPS increases in games where they would need to go in and change the FPS target.

Link's Awakening targeted 60FPS already so in Nintendo's brand of logic, they didn't apply any FPS changes (which they didn't). The game still targets 60, only now it probably actually accomplishes it without tanking all the time. In games that originally did not have 60FPS at all, that's where we see them talking about increased framerate, because they had to go in and raise the cap, per your own assessment.

Nintendo and Nvidia created an upscaler technique using the tensor cores an ML especially for BC… What are you talking about? 😂

I understand, but as far as i understand. Those things DO NOT make games run better automatically. Especially, doubling frame rates. That is a patch. So far as i understand.

Glad about Scarlet/Violet. I hated them on the stock Switch, but when I played on Yuzu, they were actually very fun games at a constant 30 fps. Probably my favorite honestly as I liked the Annihilation/Lovecraftian esque story. If they bump it to 60 fps with higher visual fidelity, I'll have to do another playthrough.

This is a good response, i appreciate the clarification. We will have to see. I hope you're right. Echoes of Wisdom is the only other game I would purchase at launch, as it is what my kid wants to play.

Even better, these updates seem like free "Switch 2 Editions". If you noticed, Game Builder Garage is being updated to support native mouse controls, and that's something I think would usually be out of scope for a simple backwards compatible game.

Game Builder support mouse and keyboard on Switch 1.

True, but not the Joy-Con 2 mouse. Joy-Con 2 mice support gyro functions so I think this isn't an emulated solution, but rather native support. Makes you wonder why Nintendo are charging $10 for the new Switch 2 Edition games.

The Joy Con 2 mouse is a simple mouse for Game Builder there's not extra features or gyro support.

I don't think this makes any sense.
I believe he and I were saying the same thing.

Again, I am going to harp on something that we can all agree on. Nintendo's communication has become awful! It used to be just bad…but we have descended from the bottom of bad into awful.

Some clarification would go a long way. Nintendo PR could just throw up 30 second YouTube clips of each game and show the difference, if they wanted.
